Original Feature

In honor of the Dreamworks Animation Monsters Vs. Aliens hitting theaters this weekend here is a list of my 15 favorite animated films of the last 10 years:

15. Coraline 3-D (Selick, 2009)

coraline-still-1.jpg

Henry Selick uses 3-D technology to perfection in order to create a massively immersive fantasy. With a story based on a Neil Gaman book, we are led into a variety of environments with a world of intriguing characters.

14. South Park: Bigger Longer & Uncut (Parker, 1999)

south-park.jpg

I can’t stand the TV show, but somehow this movie clicked for me. It was raunchy and smart enough to excel beyond the subpar Comedy Central show. The musical numbers were wildly entertaining and the jokes were near-brilliant.

13. Chicken Run (Lord, Park, 2000)

chicken_run_3-600x450.jpg

Directed by the man behind Wallace and Gromit, Nick Park, this impressive claymation adventure was pure entertainment. While most of my list is made up of computer animation it is astounding to think every frame of this film was handmade. The action sequences are particularly spectacular.

12. Persepolis (Paronnaud, Satrapi, 2007)

persepolis21.jpg

While this isn’t like the feel-good films that make up the rest of my list, this black and white animation uses unique techniques to create a powerful and gripping narrative about Iran’s Islamic Revolution.

11. Ratatouille (Bird, 2007)

ratatouille_frompixar.gif

I fell in love with this movie during the first cooking scene. The colors are so vivid, the camera movement so magical, and the story is simply a joy to watch. Pixar took a chance with this film and to say they succeeded would be a understatement.

10. Shrek (Adamson, Jenson, 2001)

shrek4.jpg

Blending an original fairytale while poking fun at past ones, this film manages to provide jokes that appeal to all ages. It’s thoroughly entertaining and technically extraordinary.

9. Monster’s Inc. (Doctor, 2001)

MonstersInc1.jpg

Another film that speaks to adults, as well as children, while delivering a mix of emotions. The amount of creativity, energy, and imagination in this film is awe-inspiring.

8. Spirited Away (Miyazaki, 2001)

lp_spiritedaway02_med-600x324.jpg

I’m not the biggest fan of Eastern animation but it is impossible to deny the greatness of Miyazaki’s classic. The inventive characters help add to the story that perpetually pulls the viewer in until one never wants to escape the world that has been magically built around them.

7. The Emperor’s New Groove (Dindal, 2000)

emperors-new-groove-03.jpg

This animation is just downright hilarious. When I first watched it I was surprised how many laughs were contained throughout the film. While the story and animation are pretty standard, the buddy comedy relationship is what elevates this film. It is just a pure joy to watch.

6. Toy Story 2 (Lasseter, 1999)

buzz_lightyear_hamm_bo_peep_mr_potato_head_rex_slinky_dog_toy_story_2_001.jpg

Rarely does a sequel live up to its predecessor. It’s even rarer when a sequel outshines the original. This animation manages to improve in nearly every aspect and become an instant masterpiece. I’m weary of other potential Pixar sequels (see: Cars 2) but if they can do something this good, I’m looking forward to it.

5. Titan A.E. (Bluth, Goldman, 2000)

titan-a-e.jpg

Most people will not agree with this decision but I love, love, love this movie. It’s a satisfying sci-fi adventure with slick animation and intriguing characters. It proves sci-fi can be fun while expertly mixing CGI and hand drawn elements.

4. The Incredibles (Bird, 2004)

the-incredibles-600x249.jpg

With top-notch animation, characters, story, direction, and sound, there is little this movie does wrong. The actions scenes are fantastic and this new look at super hero life fresh and always fun.

3. The Iron Giant (Bird, 1999)

up-iron_giant_1_lg.jpg

What a powerhouse of a film. The relationships one sees here are complex and completely affecting. Full of adventure, life, and tragedy this is one of the smartest animations ever.

2. Finding Nemo (Stanton, 2003)

findingnemo-photo_02_hires-600x389.jpg

Full of rich, luscious visuals with hilarious and endearing characters, this film hits on all notes. Features some of the best voice work to date and memorable scene after memorable scene. Simply another masterpiece.

1. Wall-E (Stanton, 2008)

wall-e-600x279.jpg

When an animated film with no dialogue or humans for the majority of its running time can convey more emotion than most live-action films you know it is something special. Wall-E broke new boundaries in sound design, storytelling, and animation. The film is not only another addition to the fantastic Pixar library, but a classic across all genres.

What do you think of this list? Would you add or take anything away?

it's okay
at least he had the decency to put one Miyazaki film on there.

Toy Story 2 is the worst Pixar movie by far and Chicken Run was disappointing

6. Toy Story 2 (Lasseter, 1998)
Doesn't add up!

Not bad, The top 4 are pretty much right on (maybe I'd put them in a different order but whatever) I'd probably put Surf's Up in there somewhere (maybe over Chicken Run)

I also like Toy Story 1 over 2. (although that would be outside 10 years so...)

Kill Shrek with the fire of a thousand suns.
Hey, the first 30 minutes or so of Shrek is OK, it's downhill from there (and further and further downhill with each progressive movie)

Kudos for including Titan AE. I thought I was the only one who loved Titan AE lol =(

I loved every movie on this list. Probably seen Emperor's New Groove and Spirited Away like 20 times lol

Wall-E melts my heart, and I would swap out Toy Story 2 for Princess Mononoke.

Princess Mononoke was 1997, it would have been on here though. Glad someone else loves Titan A.E. as well! and Emperor's New Groove. Those were the two I didn't think anyone would agree with.

I think walle is one of the most overrated animated movie of the last 10 years. Shrek as well. The rest of the list is good, although persepolis the book is much better.

Glad to see Titan A.E. and The Emperor's New Grove acknowledged. Tremendously underrated, excellent movies both.

Kept scrolling down, expecting to find "Wallace & Gromit: Curse Of The Were-Rabbit" at number one though, one of my favourite animted movies ever, a superb production. The fact it isn't on the list at all means the writer needed a bigger list.

Decent list, but skews heavily in favor of American movies.

I'd shuffle it a bit and find room for Paprika or Millennium Actress and maybe Tekkonkinreet too.

Here's MY list, picking up your premise:

1 - The Iron Giant
2 - Wall-E
3 - The Incredibles
4 - Fantasia 2000
5 - Ratatouille
6 - Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi (Spirited Away)
7 - Kung Fu Panda
8 - Millennium Actress
9 - South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut
10 - Les Triplettes de Belleville
11 - Finding Nemo
12 - Happy Feet
13 - Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas
14 - Lilo & Stitch
15 - Shrek

Even so, I had to leave many, many great animation movies out. Just because something's not in this list, doesn't mean I didn't love it. I just love these ones more than the others.

The last decade has been very generous to us, regarding animated cinema.

If it makes you feel better Wallace and Gromit barely missed the list! great movie!

Yeah, I've tried to watch all those and I just can't get into them. I'll have to give them another chance.

You need to watch more animation, I think. Your choices are not bad, but they're certainly not the best. This would be my list:

1. Mind Game (Maasaki Yuasa)
2. Millenium Actress (Satoshi Kon)
3. The Girl Who Leapt Through Time (Mamoru Hosoda)
4. The Iron Giant (Brad Bird)
5. Jin Roh (Hiroyuki Okiura)
6. Spirited Away (Hayao Miyazaki)
7. Summer Days with Coo (Keiichi Hara)
8. Persepolis (Vincent Paronnaud, Marjane Satrapi)
9. Wall-E (Andrew Stanton)
10. Idiots and Angels (Bill Plympton)
11. Tokyo Godfathers (Satoshi Kon)
12. The Triplets of Belleville (Sylvain Chomet)
13. Coraline (Henry Selick)
14. My Neighbors the Yamadas (Isao Takahata)
15. Dead Leaves (Hiroyuki Imaishi)

Wall-E was good but not that good, the second half sucked compared to the first.
Yeah, but the first half is really, really good. They should have just made the second half shorter, it drags.

Very nice list. I don't think I would have Chicken Run, or Spirited away on my top 15 list of the last 10 years though.

One big one I would defiantly have up there is Tokyo Godfathers. And I would have Howls Moving Castle or The Cat Returns instead of Spirited Away. Another anime film I would put up is the Utena Movie. I'd also try to get Bolt in the top 10. It felt like Disney finally remembered how to make a good film again though the last 10 years has seen a great list of films, I can see it not making it.

My top 15 of the last 10 years would probably be...

1. Wall-E
2. The Incredibles
3. Tokyo Godfathers.
4. The Iron Giant
5. Ratatouille
6. South Park: Bigger Longer Uncut
7. Adolescence of Utena
8. Toy Story 2
9. Coraline
10. The Cat Returns
11. Shrek
12. Howls Moving Castle
13. Lupin The Thrid: First Contact
14. Bolt
15. Spirited Away

I've seen all of those movies and I disagree with you.

what? finding nemo better than iron giant? blah blah blah... [cue silly rage list]

nice list. I like pretty much all those movies but with the exception of Shrek which I don't think has aged well.

Wall-E is one of my favorite movies of all time and my fav movie of last year, in any medium. it cant get enough love.

I really don't see why people like Shrek. The first 40 minutes of the first Shrek were alright, but then it went to shit and the second and especially third movies have sucked through and through (except for some great music in all 3 movies).

I would put these three in somewhere

Millenium Actress (Kon 2001)

millenniumactresspic.jpg

Ghost in the Sheel 2: Innocence (Oshii 2004)

Centimeters Per Second: a chain of short stories about their distance (Shinkai 2007)

don't start including all this anime stuff..the list should only include films released in theaters to a world wide audience.

Films are the one area where anime isn't completely worthless. US animation kinda blows in comparison, even Pixar.

The contents of the list are not bad, I just don't agree with the order. (Ratatouille is too low on the list, e.t.c.)

Also I'd rather have Howl's Moving Castle on top of Chicken Run. Stop motion is not an excuse for choosing an inferior film on top of a better one.

(Yes HMC was Miyazaki's flawed masterpiece, but it is far more memorable than chicken run)

Alternatively, I would nominate wallace and gromit curse of the were-rabbit over chicken run.

I'd move Iron Giant to #1. "Superman" style.

EDIT: Also, you distinctly need some Satoshi Kon love in this list.

DanielPlainview said:
I can't get past the first 15 minutes of that movie, I've tried at least 5 times. I don't know how people love it so much.
It's a weird movie because for me at least almost all the comedy falls flat but some of the more serious stuff works better. Not in my all time favorites but it looks nice and is better than any of the Shrek movies at least.

I'm a fan of Titan A.E. but it's too high on the list. If you're going to include a Bluth film, it should really be The Secret of N.I.M.H.

Okay. I've seen Millennium Actress and Mind Game in US theaters, so let's just add those to the list, shall we? This leaves off the excellent The Girl Who Leapt Through Time but I suppose the important thing in defining an animated film is what country it was released in.
