This should include moderately successful albums starting after 1990. So at the very bottom of success I would put something along the lines of PH Harvey, Also I will simply define mainstream as being moderately popular.

Lets try an create a GAF list if enough are willing to participate.

Fuck the mainstream.

Will edit with list.

When I say mainstream, I am just talking about having a broad audience. So that someone outside of your circle of friends could at least potentially have heard of the band.

Edit: man looking at some of these early lists, it is tough. I already changed two of mine, and want to change two more now.

No DJ Shadow is well known. The truth of the matter is that if they are to obscure, nobody is going to vote for them so it will just work itself out.

Gah! Seeing so many I would've put in my list thinking a bit longer.

Wilco, Nas, Beck, Daft Punk, Nirvana, LCD Soundsystem...

Fuck it, the list is the list!

Why will it be hilarious? I don't get it.

Edit: also, Kid A has had two votes totalling 8 points. OK Computer already has it beat.

1990 is a weird cutoff, it leaves out stuff like Disintegration and Doolitttle which were both 1989.

Yeah I had to put it somewhere. I think Appetite for Destruction and Bleach are 80's records as well. They are going to have to compete with the 60' and 70's which I think is not all that crazy.

I need to check out this DJ Shadow album apparently.

Maybe I have no sense of what is modern or popular, but can I submit my list?

1. Ween - The Mollusk
2. Phish - A Live One
3. Prince - Emancipation
4. Ween - Pure Guava
5. Sugar - Copper Blue
6. Phish - The Story of the Ghost
7. Sonic Youth - Washing Machine
8. Stone Roses - Stone Roses
9. Ween - Shinoal Vol 1.
10. moe. - No Doy
11. Frank Zappa - The Yellow Shark (or do posthumous releases count as well?)
12. Prince - Diamonds and Pearls
13. Widespread Panic - Panic in the Streets
14. Oysterhead - The Grand Pecking Order (Band contained Les Claypool, Stuart Copland and Trey Anastasio...so pretty popular I'd say)
15. Bod Dylan - Time Out of Mind

DJ Shadow is a great DJ, but if all his full bodied work was as good as Entroducing the man would be legendary. Sell out stadiums with the likes of Daft Punk and The Chemical Brothers.

1. Modest Mouse - The Moon and Antarctica
2. Postal Service - Give Up
3. Nine Inch Nails - The Fragile
4. Gorillaz - Demon Days
5. The Smashing Pumpkins - Adore
6. Pearl Jam - Ten
7. Radiohead - The Bends
8. Weezer - Blue Album
9. Coldplay - Parachutes
10. Garbage - Garbage

Dude you put Tilly and the Wall and Joanna Newsom's debut album up there as a mainstream success? Tilly and the Wall with their tap dancing percussion section and Joanna Newsom with her dive bar northern california tours. Super mainstream.

I think it's easier to do "rankings" per decade (80s, 90s, 00s, 10s) or per half-decade (90-95, 06-10). For music fans, especially in this age of easily accessible music, there's simply too much good music coming out all the time to only list 15 albums in a 20+ year span of time. I could name hundreds of albums from this range that I love.

Hm. I'm picky about labeling mainstream. But here goes anyway.

1. System of a Down - Toxicity
2. Radiohead - OK Computer
3. Rage Against The Machine - Rage Against The Machine
4. Muse - Origin of Symmetry
5. Gorillaz - Demon Days
6. Nine Inch Nails - The Downward Spiral
7. The Prodigy - Music for The Jilted Generation
8. Daft Punk - Discovery
9. Tool - Aenima
10. Porcupine Tree - Fear of a Blank Planet
11. Justice - Cross
12. Ministry - Psalm 69
13. Linkin Park - Hybrid Theory
14. The xx - xx
15. Pendulum - In Silico

I'm stupidly selective about what I listen to and my opinion on mainstream is probably worth jack shit.
