Are those Hunter x Hunter comparisons valid? I'm watching the anime now and it's probably the best Shonen series I've seen.

If it's anything like that then I'll be a lot more interested.

I wouldnt say so.

I like Toriko but, while in HxH the battles are "smart", in Toriko its just more of what you know from Bleach/One Piece/Naruto where its more about powerlevels than tactical finesse.

In a world sense yes... since the world has people like Hunters who have certain tasks to do like the Bishokuya who hunt for food ingredients, the Chefs who cook it and the Saiseiya who protect and restore ingredients

Ingredients have levels attached to them... their is a major organization who manages most classes like the Hunter Organization called the IGO, etc...

but the battles are not as tactical as HXH

Yep, they're really mostly straightforward fights. Can't think of any fights except one that required any sort of tactics beyond Toriko v. Grin.

Isnt Toriko ranked higher than Bleach nowadays in the Jump surveys?

The problem with the Anime of Toriko is though, that it consists of like 80% Filler-Episodes. You have this arc of like 6 episodes, then 10 new episodes of filler-material.

High rankings but volumes sell like crap. TOC is also a combination of votes and pushing.

From reading the manga (up to the most recently published volume in America, 17), it's really standard Shonen done well. It has all of the standard tropes, but it's really over the top. It really is a modern Fist of the North Star, but even sillier than that.

Speaking of FotNS, my first exposure to the series was the OVA that was in the Jump Super Anime Tour awhile back. The style and animation of that thing were amazing! Unfortunately, the current anime has neither. They're really pandering for young kids more than many Shonen that I've seen in a long time. Because of that there's a ton of filler and unnecessary side content that's really boring. I've been watching the anime slowly, but I may just give up all together soon. At least One Piece has some really great drama and voice acting to go with its boring anime. Toriko has neither on that front as well.

I think that's why it hasn't taken off. It's just too by the numbers and offers nothing new or interesting. It has the action of DBZ. It has the manly musculature of Fist of the North Star. It has the world creativity of One Piece. What's new?

The only thing more derivative is Fairy Tail.

I agree that the original pitch OVA stayed more true to the manga it truly is unfortunate that they decided to tone it down a bit...if they went for the more original OVA approach and stayed constant in their animation then I believe that the series would have gained even more favour and appeal
