Torn between a 3DS XL and a Vita.

Ultimately, it boils down to getting a console you don't own and two (good) games for it or getting a second 3DS. I would wager that the people recommending the 3DS only read the topic title and hasn't read that the OP already has a 3DS. I'd go with the Vita bundle in that situation without question. I will say that your policy rejecting downloadable games is very silly, because a) there's a whole bunch of very good download-only games for the 3DS/DSi and b) there's also a bunch of very good download-only games for the Vita and c) PSP back catalogue for the Vita is download only, and if you're in the EU regularly goes on sale.

Nah, I read it. Still would pick it. Or better yet, just don't buy either right now.

i don't understand why you don't play downloadable games

I don't like the idea of full retail prices to buy a temporary license on something I can't actually own. I got burned buying DLC on the OG Xbox and lost access to content I payed for on older titles so I just don't support the business model anymore.

And I do play downloadable games as they become available on PS+. The concept of a buffet style subscription service is more in line with what I'm comfortable with paying for so that's the business practice I support.

I just don't want to get burned again. I buy a lot of games and I don't want to have it all get flushed down the drain as soon as some company decided it's not worth their time to keep the servers running.

Never buy consoles/handhelds now for future potential.

If you want a vita, you can probably get one cheaper in a few months.

Not sure if this will help at all but: I own pretty much every console and handheld...except a Vita. I usually buy hardware Day One, but I still haven't felt like I am missing out on anything by not having a Vita. That may change in the coming year, but as for right now it seems like a device that will sit around unused.

I own a launch 3DS and have a pre-order in with Newegg for a 3DS XL. Make of that what you will.

The likes of Pushmo and Dillon's Rolling Western aren't full retail prices, maybe if you're the cautious type I'd wait until the account system gets added. But I still wouldn't just write off the e-shop because you got burned by the xbox.

There's a reason people are selling Vita's off cheaply - the current lineup is terrible.

However, given you already have a 3DS, I personally don't think you'll get that much more enjoyment from the XL version. And since you're into PSO, a game like that is almost enough to justify the price of the Vita alone given how many hours you might play it. So I'd say Vita.

i have a 3DS, am buying an XL and dont have a Vita.

It has to do with not wanting to add another system catalog to my already deep backlog of every other system.

Ya know!?

Satisfy your obvious curiosity and get the Vita. You can always use it to wheel and deal your way to the XL if you regret your purchase. Besides a 3g vita with Metal Gear and Uncharted, for $200 is not a deal you will see very often...you can get rid of that probably without taking a loss if need be

I therefore conclude that you don't use your laptop for gaming then. Your criticisms is true for all forms of digital distribution (everyone remember the Playsforsure scandal?), and ultimately gaming is moving towards a digital distribution only outside of a selection of AAA games due to only having to deal with one middle man (the retailer) rather than disc presser/delivery/retailer etc and so niche games are less of a risk. Hell, PC gaming is already already there in the US.

You know most downloadable games are less than 20$ right?

I asked myself the same question not long ago, since I like Miku and would love the Miku Vita if I could afford it, but I'd prioritize the XL.

I've gotten around 1500 hours out of my 3DS, and while I'd enjoy a Vita (and Miku) I doubt I'd get more than 50 hours of playtime; on the contrary, I easily see myself spending another 500 hours on the 3DS by the end of the year among the games I already own and the new ones I'm interested in. Getting an XL and increasing that enjoyment would give me the most value for money, in my opinion.

I wouldnt buy a Vita now. You and everyone else knows that Sony is going to have to do some emergency actions to breath life into the system.

This Fall they will probably have some crazy bundles though game taste will of course matter if any of the bundles will appeal

Not entirely true, there are a lot of free to play games I'm looking forward to, like PSO2, Hawken, Mechwarrior, and I play Minecraft, TF2, and LoL regularly

Even in the craziest of situations I'm not sure how long it'll be before the price drops down to what I can buy it for currently. I can't see a $100 price drop bundle with 2 games happening THAT soon.

The Vita is not dead nor is it even close to possibly being dead. Extremes are always embraced on gaming message boards... especially those with hordes of Nintendo fans.

The Vita has fantastic games currently and plenty more on the near horizon. If you've never owned a PSP then the Vita is a must own as there are more fantastic games than you could possibly play for the PSP alone let alone the stellar games currently and soon releasing on the Vita. The second analog and stunning OLED screen make PSP games sing.

Edit: Saw that you owned a PSP but never got in to it. Get the Vita. No brainer at this point.

I wouldn't blame you at all not wanting to pay full retail prices for downloadable games. That's why I never buy digital versions of retail games. However, most downloadable games (eShop and PSN) are way cheaper than retail; like, $15 or under. You're missing out on some great games. Like Sound Shapes that just came out today could easily have been a Vita retail game, but it's $15 on PSN, which is just amazing.

I had a vita day 1 but sold it later on. Awesome tech but serious lack of games and Sony never said anything at e3 really. Have a friend who also has one and wants to sell it for the same reasons. I don't have a 3ds but want one.

Vita, you have a 3DS, it makes more sense of that to be the secondary purchase I think.

The correct answer. First post wins as usual.

I personally would wait to see if they is a price cut coming this holiday though. PSO2 won't be out until next year anyway.

Save your money. No really, I know that's not what you want to hear but think about it.

You already have a 3ds, if you can live with that for a while longer, I'd just stay stick with that. Until Sony can prove they are serious with the Vita, then I'd stay away. Support just isn't where it needs to be. If anything, sell your 3ds and maybe buy both. Or like I said, save the money until you decide what is worth it.

Neither. Vita is in trouble and will either see a price cut or be killed off within a year or so and therefore can be got much cheaper down the line. You already have a 3DS.

Save your money for something else.

I'm facing a similar decision and i'm probably going to go with 3DS XL because frankly im not even sure the Vita will be supported beyond 2013.

Ridiculous. I'm sorry, but the doom and gloom BS slung around forums is incredibly annoying at this point. The PSP was "dead", the 3DS was "dead", the Vita is "dead"... notice a pattern?

I assume you paid for Minecraft and have considered the possibility that Mojang might shut down the authentication servers at some point in the (far flung) future.

What a bait of a thread.

That said, I'll always go for a newer system if I have the money. Always. Why buy the same device twice unless you have them all? You won't miss out on any games that way.

You can alway sell it and get XL if you don't like it.

I have a Vita and a 3DS. Personally I would recommend getting the vita since you already have a 3ds. Just because the vita sales are not great doesn't mean its a bad system. How many people going against the Vita actually have one? Many of my friends changed their mind on the Vita after trying out mine for a little bit. Vita is the best handheld ever released, most comfortable handheld system, and when you factor in the PSP and (soon to arrive)PSone downloadable titles it has one of the best handheld libraries as well. Games that were a pain to play on the janky PSP controls are much more enjoyable on the VIta.

IMO it makes more sense to try out the Vita vs spending 200 on a console that you already own, at the very least you should trade in the 3ds for the XL and get a Vita.

Outside of Niche japanese titles the PSP really was dead.

As someone who is trying to offload his vita for a massive discount despite it being basically new, I couldn't recommend it less. You may have a 3ds, but you have to ask yourself if the Vita is worth the hardware investment. Will you play it enough?

(I've never previously sold a console and have owned every mainstream console/handheld since the NES...)

It does, however, mean wait for a price drop. It's bound to happen soon.

Of course it will be supported past 2013 and I bet it will get a price drop this fall.

Sony, a company that is in serious financial trouble, will not continue throwing good money after bad. If the system doesn't turn around soon it's going to wind up like the Lynx, Saturn, Virtual Boy and Jaguar.

Actually no, it was a gift :D

Fine. If you are going to be hardline against paying money for a downloadable game then you might as well save your money, since a large attraction in my opinion the Vita has is the downloadable games. You also aren't using your 3DS to its fullest extent if you haven't got Pushmo and Mighty Switch Force, never mind your PC games.

I'm sorry, but 1.5 million sales since launch is pretty terrible, anyway you cut it.

Get a XL.

Wait for a Vita price drop/bundle down the line.

Pretty much this, there were people that bought a 3DS one week before the price cut was announced (Wasn't me, I got it day one), don't do that to yourself, get an XL and wait for whatever deal Sony/retailers have prepared for Vita.

Honestly, unless your 3DS has any problems, I'd say skip both and put that money towards a Wii U.

If you abso-fucking-lutely have to get one right now, then go for the 3DS XL. I can't recommend the Vita until it gets some damn support. I won't declare it totally dead yet, but signs aren't good.

EDIT: Just saw your price situation. That is a tough deal to pass up. I stand by my post, but I wouldn't blame you if got that Vita.

The deal I'm being offered on the Vita is really, really good.
