Weren't you working on an adaptation of Akira? How is that any different?

Well I'd say the difference there is the Akira movie, while some considered to be a classic...is pretty flawed IMO and could use an update. Maybe not the kind of update Hollywood wanted to do -_-, but still...the original ending was just a mess to me personally.

Never seen the original, seen bits of it, and today, it just looks IMO totally cheap and old, what I like with some of those remakes is seeing those with today's visuals, like updated visuals.

You're better served picking out a few random cut scenes from one of the Mass Effect games.

Edit: his 666th post, makes sense considering the blasphemous nature

As much as I and everyone loves Akira it's by no means a mainstream film and being a foreign animated piece (aimed at adults no less) it's never going to be. Total Recall is a film that modern audiences are still very familiar with.

If the right filmmaker felt as though he had the right take on it I'd have no problem with a live action Akira as it wouldn't impact the original.

IIRC WB's take on Akira actually follows the original comic series NOT remake the animated film. And I know some people who think that the original comic is far superior to the movie. So it's all about taking the original source material and interpreting it in a new way.

Here we have the ultimate 'paint by numbers' corporate filmmaking. The original Total Recall is beloved and still popular today. The decision to make this film was nothing more than 'are the rights available?'. And then seeing who the studio had on tap to do it. I even heard that Sony found out that Colin Farrell owed them a film on a previous contract so he was doing this film whether he wanted to or not.

If you think Total Recall is bad the producer Neal Moritz also picked up the remake rights to CLIFFHANGER from Canal Plus at the same time as got the Total Recall remake rights.

So disappointed by this film. I absolutely love the original. I gave this a chance and but it just doesn't come close to Arnie's version.

For some reason, the vertical-ness of the world and the suits those soldiers/special forces wore, remind me of Vanquish.

From the trailers, those white robots or suits...whatever. They always looked like a complete rip off of the security robots in Mass Effect 2.

That might explain his yawn inducing performance and the look on his face throughout the movie, LOL. Honestly, Kate was the most interesting and enjoyable character in the movie by far. She pretty much stole the show.

EDIT - I will edit if that GIF is too 'graphic' for the thread.

Well sorry, but just the scene with Arnie in the cab with the frickin robot looks............ so kitsch IMO.
Would u have prefer it to be CGI?

She was pretty boss.
I'd like to see her in more roles as a villain.

Are you the kind the idoits that prefer Hitchcock remakes to the originals?

You probably don't know what a Hitchcock is.

What in the world is this. It has got to be a troll because it's working and I'm grinding my teeth.

I actually prefer the look of the first movie over the look of the new one. TR 1990 had a nice clean look to it's future that fit the mood of the movie very well. I think it helped make the movie more enjoyable to watch. The new TR had such a chaotic, hard to follow jumbled messy look to it that at times it was tiring to look at it. Maybe if the performances and story would have been better I would have spent less time examining the scenery and backgrounds, lol. I will say that the effects in the new one weren't bad, I just think the business of it could have been toned down at times. More isn't always better.

Well, no, not a troll. We're in 2012, some stuff just doesn't cut it. I"m not talking about every movie, but I would have loved for example (and I love the movies) for the original Star Wars trilogy to have been made today, it's just jarring to go from prequel trilogy to this for example.

*head explodes*

.., fuck off. There is no way that you are a real person. I'm assuming that you are in fact a viral marketing project for some new type of body spray or extreme energy drink.

fixed

LOL.

Explains himself by calling for a remake of the Star Wars OT so it fits better with the prequel trilogy.

I can't help you anymore, Pinky.

Oh, you are one of those people. Right. Good to know, now I understand how to gauge your opinions from now on.

Oh, and please don't let anyone else touch the original Star Wars trilogy. It's fine just the way it is and does not need modern effects like the prequels have... O_o

Aww it's just ThePinkDagger people. He doesn't know any better.

I have a theory he started watching movies in the year 2000.

Since I'm a child, I'm 22 so I am used to a certain "look", I don't like watching old movies because they do not correspond to the look I am used to. Some of my top 10/20 movies are old movies, so obviously, I make an exception for some of those. I love The Goonies, I love the Lethal Weapons (not 4, except the end), Terminator 2, etc, but I'm a techno whore and I just love everything related to technology, like picture quality, projectors, HD,etc.

I marvel at digitally shot movies (like this one, shot with Epic), or special effects heavy movies (Avatar, etc).

It may be hard to understand for someone like you

Do yourself a favour. Go and watch Casablanca or North By Northwest on Blu Ray (as I did just the other day) and educate yourself on films and story telling.

I know you like to think you know what you're talking about because you glance over Variety or Deadline Hollywood in the morning but you do not. In any way shape or form.

Because if you interact with other human beings and say such utterly ludicrous things they'll laugh at you. If you're lucky not to your face but they will just laugh at you.

And I don't want people to laugh at you. Well...., not all the time anyway.

Man, Terminator 2 being 20 years old and still looks better than most movies shot today outside some CG effects.

You dont know nothing about me. Dont make me laugh, just because I dont worship classics such as Casablanca or Citizen Kane doesnt make me a moron.

I know a lot about movies, I just watch what I want to watch. I did watch 12 Angry Men and M, or Wages Of Fear which are great movies, but I like my movies to have a certain look to them.

Oh and I'm not calling for a remake of SW, Mr Sculli, I'm saying I would have LIKED to see what it would look like.

Fucked up quot, I was talking to Busty.

It's one thing to prefer the look of modern movies because they're cleaner, better technology etc. I understand that. I mean people complain about bad CGI all the time because they want to see stuff like Avatar or something along those lines. But once you see enough movies you realize directing style and what's on the screen content-wise, how something is shot etc. matters a lot more than the quality of the cameras imo (although I do prefer the 'old film' look and wish Scorsese could make another film that looks like Taxi Driver visually).

I'm 23 so it really has nothing to do with age. I don't know how someone can watch Vertigo and say they would want a remake. There are some movies that are so good even if you shot it exactly the same with new cameras it just wouldn't be the same. Even if you resurrected Jimmy Stewart and all the other actors and did EVERY thing the same except for the cameras and visuals I still don't think it would be as good. There's just something about movies made in certain decades that acquire an appreciation for how they were made at the time.

The original Total Recall is a classic. I love when you can tell a good film that was made in the 80s, the cheesy nature of some of the scenes, Arny's lines, etc. all contribute to what kind of movie that is. I don't understand the mentality of wanting to change or 'upgrade' that when it's so entertaining and worthwhile the first time around. Remakes should be reserved for bad movies, or movies that could be legitimately expanded and done better. An example of the latter imo could've been Day the earth stood still. The remake was bad but if it was done well it could've been better than the original, have updated effects etc. because I don't think most people would consider the original a 'classic' the way they do Psycho.

edit - I see you meant you would be interested in seeing how a remake of Star Wars OT would turn out, which I guess is ok but I would much rather see only short tech demo's of that sort of thing. The problem is you can't replace the original actors, the atmosphere and feel of them etc. Remakes wouldn't hurt them the way the prequel trilogy did but it does make you cringe and just wish Hollywood would hire some of those great underground screenwriters looking for work instead of rehashing shit.

Well, I love Taxi Driver, but I'm a big techno whore as I said, I do love paying attention to framing and stuff (I did some couple of shorts of my own, but I'm not so motivated for it now)

I do agree that some movies should never be remade, but for some of those, it is a welcome addition.

But that's the thing. If you're thinking that more technology and special effects makes a better movie, you couldn't be more wrong. Avatar, for example, is a beautiful movie, but it's a shit movie. I could watch it on mute and be happy.

VFX =/= Good Movie

You dont know nothing about me.

Now I realise that English isn't your first language and seeing as I don't speak any other languages I can't tease but.....

Hahahahahahahaha. Brilliant. All I can picture is Mr T saying this.

Everything that you have posted on GAF in the past does not suggest this at all. But I'll give you the benefit of the doubt. Fair enough.

I did some couple of shorts of my own...,

Please link them. I'd love to see what they would life coming from a mind as 'fertile' as yours.

That is not what I think though, don't misread me.

For Avatar, me and Sculli (I guess) will agree to disagree.

@Busty: Stfu.

Man the film industry is so pathetically stagnant these days. If I wanted to go watch Total Recall I'd go watch the original. Stop pumping out shit Spiderman movies over and over and try to actually use some creativity.

Lets concentrate on how bad they fucked up this remake.

I doubt it could be as wretch-inducing as The Karate Kid remake.

I remember GAF was praising that remake. It's the only reason I gave it a shot. It made me so very angry. It was godawful.

Am waiting to see this but this looks like a fun summer movie, I dont expect anything more from Len Wiseman. Cranston seems wasted though once more, sounds like he's barely 10-15 min in it. Same thing in Drive, they need to give him a fucking lead.

I wouldn't say it was a "fun" summer movie, but it's not what I would call terrible either. Extremely mediocre and lackluster is how I would describe it. If you are real bored and can see it very cheap and just need to see a movie, then yeah I'd say it's worth a viewing.

In my opinion, they would have been much better off calling this something else and just making it a straight up action movie with some futuristic spy stuff thrown in, because that's pretty much what it was. Being free to change a few things and embellish it in some other areas might have made it more interesting.

How was Bryan Cranston?

That's all I want to know.

He was okay. Very minimal presence until the very end, but then when he finally came into the picture then he did a good job. Actually, other than Kate he probably was the most interesting character, and he barely had any screen time at all. That says alot, lol. The movie needed more of him honestly, the first movie's main villian had much more interaction and this one needed that from the big bad.

I don't know what Pinky's on, but I'm 22 and I love the old Total Recall. In fact I love a lot of old movies despite how dated the effects look.

And this is coming from someone who works in the VFX industry.

Weren't you working on an adaptation of Akira? How is that any different?
Well for one thing that was an adaptation of the original graphic novels, not a remake of the movie which was vastly different from the graphic novels. If they had gone back and come up with a new adaptation of the original PDK story I'd probably be much more interested in this, a remake which seems to go out of its way to constantly remind you that it's a remake. Total recall indeed.

I fucking despair at everything in this post. I love Terminator 2 is given an as example of a vintage movie. Kids today, it's like cinema history began in 1989. And this is exactly why insta-remakes like TR are viable, for the target audience the original movie made in 1990 is their equivalent of a black-and-white silent film.

Watched it last night, didn't care for the movie, but my gawd the visuals and the city were really spectacular. Will buy on blu-ray just so I can take in the sights again. Glad I saw it just for that; love future skylines like that. Really excellent work on that front.

You are so wrong. So so so so so so so wrong.

Out of curiosity, are there any classic 80s action movies you do enjoy?

Whether you like it or not, Terminator 2 is 20 years old, and I consider that old indeed. But dont get me wrong, this is one of the movies that I find timeless, doesnt age a bit.
