Total War: Rome II officially announced (PC, 2013 release)

Also, wasn't Sega in really big trouble and was looking into downsizing? I guess CA has been doing well enough for them? I hope this isn't the last hoorah. :|

Awesome.

I hope they don't go too "ambitious" and make another Empire TW. :|

The idea of increasing importance and management of individual unit groups, along with more involved and 'personal' campaign missions, seems to be the best way to push the Total War series further. With Empire, I felt 'ambition' simply equated to making the game way too fucking big. As if 'scale' simply meant ridiculous size of the campaign map and way too much fiddly shit.

Scope and scale of Total War, in my opinion, should be features available from the campaign map right down to individual units, rather than juts making the game 'big'.

Fuck yes!!! Please CA, just don't fuck this up on the performance and compatibility side which are always the weaknesses of your games.

Shogun 2's come a long way in optimization so I have faith that they have a better understanding now unless the graphical improvements throw it all out of whack again. Shogun 2 runs a lot better than most games of smaller nature out there now.

I just can't fucking wait. I really wish they'd understand the importance of mod tools to the community though. Look at recent cases of games selling a lot more copies way after launch due to awesome mods and I think they should have a small team focus on mod tools. At least start working on it after launch if it's still needed...

Speaking of which, I can't believe I can't find a Rome mode for Medieval 2. After Third Age, I saw the potential of mods in the series again.

Bye gaf

Totally gonna play some original Shogun on my netbook tonight, been too long since I Total Warred it up.

This approach to individual soldiers is getting me intrigued as hell. Even replaying Starcraft 2, I like to single out one unit and say "how long will you live?".
It will be awesome to single out a single soldier and see when he enlisted, what was his first battle, where he goes and finally where he dies.
I doubt it will have this level of detail, but holy fuck if it does something kind of like that.

Like, as you play, you say "this is *my guy*" and just see how long he lasts, that will be great.

YES.

Rome is my favorite historical time period and the TW version was my favorite of the series so far. Definitely in.

Total War is one of the few IPs that do really well for Sega, so one of their main focuses going forward will be the Total War series.

This is awesome. Rome was easily my favorite of the series, and I just haven't been able to enjoy any of the more recent installments (barring medieval II) nearly as much.

I think revisiting Rome is an opportunity for them to evolve the gameplay both in the battles and the world map. Not only streamlined like Shogun 2. It would be cool if it's just a reskinned Shogun 2 but I felt like they made Shogun II feel a little too much like a board game. I want a little more complexity to the world map in addition to an evolution of the battles, especially siege.

Cant wait for this! I always made it a point to raise Carthage to the ground at the start of every campaign I did. Glad to see I can continue that trend with Rome 2.

I like the idea of each soldier having their own weight which is used for combat. It doesn't feel right in Total War games when you do a cav charge and infantry always stops them dead like they hit a wall. And in Rome you must have the elephants charging into battle.
Haven't played Empire/Shogun 2 too much but with Medieval 2 cav charging felt different from Rome 1 but more appropriate in the fact you needed tons of momentum to lift infantry off their feet. I might be wrong but Rome didn't really use heavy cavalry in this era like they did in the middle ages so there won't be insane lifts from horses but I kinda did hate them banging up against a group then being stuck even when you order them out.

Oh, and the TW Rome games are like the only ones where all the Romans aren't entirely British accents right?

The live action trailer was actually pretty cool. So there's that.

YESSSSS!
I liked Shogun but Rome was by FAR my favorite of the series! Those screenshots are awesome looking!

Fantastic - now they spent half the budget on live action trailer.

Yeah. Its nice but I've never seen the appeal of live action or purely CG trailers for games.

The screenshots look great though. If they build off of what they did with Shogun 2, Rome II should be excellent.

There's only a handful of games I'm going to buy in the foreseeable future (gaming is just boring me now) and this is at the top of the list. Probably get myself a new PC by then, too. I'll probably need it!

Rome Total War is one of my favorite games of all time. That and X-Com are some old games that I repeatedly go back and play, they just have that magic touch that never gets old... and they are both getting redone, YES!!! I cannot freaking wait for this shit. CANT WAIT.

Rome didn't use heavy cavalry but they faced empires like Parthia that used very heavy cavalry as well as facing elephants.

I've heard it said that Medieval 2 was the one that broke cavalry and ever since it's been that silly thing where you hit a wall so an animation can play but if you keep clicking orders you can "push through" what you are fighting. This is still one of the major issues the MP community has with Shogun 2 with infantry players hating the fact you can issue new orders and cav players hating the fact that cav sticks to infantry like glue.

FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think I just soiled myself.

The original is my favourite Total War and one of my favourite games of all times.

Do anyone know if Shogun 2 sold well?

No idea, but it's one of the games that stays near the top of the most played list on Steam for a long time and all of those games are successful. The big DLC and expansions they do usually gives the numbers a big shot in the arm too as the games always jump back up near the top.
