TotalBiscuit's Top 10 of 2016

It had a bit of a rocky launch, but by any measure it's an incredible game, and improves upon the original is almost every way.

Giant Bomb's dislike for it, and rant about it during their GOTY discussions, was one of the most bizarre things to listen to. It was a true "were we playing different games?" situation to me.

Seemed like Dan was the only one to actually play it for review, and he was so bad at it that he had to turn down the difficulty and still had issues completing it. The rest just latched on to his negativity since they didn't have their own experience to go on.

XCOM 2 is amazing.

Fake gamer with his fake contrarian opinions. Probably doesn't even own a console.
I don't own a console either. does that not make me a gamer either, even though I've been playing videogames for a good 25 years?

or are you just another tit whose opinions are as shitty as the thing your avatar is from

Cool to see XCOM 2 at a top of a GOTY list. A truly great sequel IMO, despite the performance issues.

xcom 2 is a weird choice for #1 considering his devotion to 60fps or unlocked games

I ran the game at 60fps on a GTX 1060. Without patches the performance is pretty horrible though yes.

I'm pretty sure the person you replied to was joking.

Sadly some are being real, its *Bloodborne was robbed* all over again.

I kinda wish we had more people asking in Gaf "No Xcom 2, what are you a casual?" In the many Goty lists it doesn't even show up.

No I don't really want that, it would be silly. But I wish Xcom 2 had atleast half of the fanaticism of the fan base for console exclusives. Atleast then I'd know people cared about the game!

it was pc only for the better part of the year and its not a movie game, with more hours of cutscenes than gameplay and autogameplay, so its understandable is not nearly as talked about on a console forum like this one

There are A LOT more console only players on GAF than PC gamers though so it's to be expected.

I am aware that XCOM 2 is on console now too but not sure how popular that version was sadly.

Xcom 2 is a boring game after 10 hours.

As soon as you build the base and full equipment it stops progressing in any way. It just throws more aliens and the same missions. Characters don't get more powerful, aliens don't get smarter and it just loops infinitely. The game should have had way more upgrades and classes because it is a sequel.

RNG is not helping as far as difficulty goes. Getting cheap 30% crits destroys the difficulty of the encounter, missing 80%+ stuff is just frustrating. A Chance to Hit + Damage variance + Chance to Crit = Way too much randomness.

The story starts off interesting, but then it all goes downhill with a cliche second half.

XCOM 2 is so dang good, other than some weird hit percentage calculations.

You're standing right in front of the sectoid, you have 99.9% chance of shooting his bananas off. Why aren't you?!

But yeah, Firaxis XCom games are superb, hope they continue.

It was also broken when it launched, so many people moved on. But don't let that fact get in the way of your fanboyism.

Yeah not gonna argue with either of these points. Just a bummer that forum like this which is for hardcore gamers and enthusiast can be very dismissive of many games. So many great games don't even get a chance. People complain why this and that is on a GOTY list since they haven't heard of it, or not just interested. Why not rather try it out then than question the reasoning behind the picks. Can't be all bad if someone likes the game enough to call it the best of the year.

It was also broken when it launched, so many people moved on. But don't let that fact get in the way of your fanboyism.

It had technical problems sure, not sure if broken is right way to describe it though. There was really nothing that would stop the progress in the game. Long ass load times and bad frame rate which wasn't even really fixed with high end specs. Would it be fair to say that Bloodborne was broken at launch? Or still is with the frame pacing issues?

Wow, quite a few people have a problem with his choices, calling him 'hipster' etc. lol, this behaviour really rubs me the wrong way, because contrary to 90% of shitty TOP LISTS out there, he actually gives an in-depth explanation as to why this is his choice. And even though I don't agree with most of his choices for 2016 TOP10, I can't say they aren't well argumented.

Was it ever actually broken? I had pretty large performance issues and long loading times, but the game always worked. With the latest patches it actually performs pretty well.

I noticed that some people really loved Overwatch the first weeks... and then they left the game, not returning back. It lost the charm for them. A fairly short term love for a multiplayer game, for them.

Maybe it's his case.

It's not, aside from the technical mess at launch it's an improvement in every way.

Civ 6 on the other hand is a massive bummer. And it's as broken as Civ 5 when it comes to AI. Back then you had the novelty of 1-unit per tile to keep it interesting, but all the same tricks still work and it's just bad. People called Beyond Earth a re-skin, Civ 6 barely qualifies as even that.

But that's when you go deeper than "oh look I built a thing, neat!" and "look, I killed a barbarian, finally!", which aren't layers dum-dum-Biscuit would be able to penetrate.

Civ6 is the best core civ ever made. If firaxis gets expansions right it can quiet easily become the best overall.
AI issues are nothing new to the series.

Steamworld Heist, Offworld Trading Company, Battlefleet Gothic: Armada, Darkest Dungeon, Superhot, Doom, and Xcom 2 are all excellent. You should try all of them if you like those genres

How is that emblematic of questionable tastes?
It's questionable, as in, I feel like some people should ask themselves the question "why haven't I even heard of half of these games?" :P

Oh pipe down.

Can't speak for the PC launch, but the console launch where the game had progressively longer loading times sometimes lasting up to seven minutes or more sure didn't help it.

He pretty clearly states at the start of the video this isn't about what he's reviewed or thinks is overall deserving of a top 10 position in an aggregated fashion. It's about what he's personally found himself gravitating towards and enjoying the most over the course of the year. That is pretty much different for everyone, and the industry would quite frankly suck if it wasn't.

That was on PC too, but you could fix it by pressing the Caps lock key strangely enough, guessing there was no such workaround on console.

Another TotalBiscuit related piece of news which further confirms my decision to not tune into his channel.

edit: Really looked forward to XCOM 2 after loving the first game, but the load times were too much for me and I moved on. If they ever sort 'em out on OG PS4 then I'll happily return.

If there wasn't an hour and a half video explaining why those games are in his top 10 maybe I could understand some of those "lol hipster/contrarian noooooo overwatch ma waifu" comments but the video is right in the OP...

Is there a competition on who can put the least mainstream games on their list?

Not everyone plays AAA or console games, friend.

I swear, a lot of people here get angry if DOOM, Titanfall 2, or bloody Overwatch aren't on someone's top 10 list of 2016.

Guys, I love those games too and its okay if other people don't like them as much as I do.

Ironically, Civ 6 and Xcom 2 are the most mainstream "AAA" strategy titles of the year. He is only missing Total War Warhammer.
That's true. It's a bit amusing and also indicative of just what GAF really is that games which sold over a million copies in less than a year are considered entries in some kind of obscurity competition.

What do you think the ratio of the people replying who actually watched the video is? I mean, I didn't.
