Totaled my car: What to get?

No, I wasn't refering to the Challenger but yours. It's an okay looking sedan in good shape.

Here's what you get for $7k here in Europe

Don't complain man, it could be worse!

This is what you get for 7K in Brazil.

I would jump back into another Nissan, personally. I mean, the last one you drove saved your life, bro. I'd seriously consider another one.

I currently drive a 2007 Nissan Sentra:

I like it. It doesn't have the balls that my previous car had, but I'm also getting less speeding tickets now, as well. :)

You could probably find a 2007 model with decent mileage for around 6-7k.

I'm going to throw out another recommendation for a Mazda3. They're fantastic little cars. Mine has been dead reliable and is a blast to drive.

LOL, how does this make all sedans ugly? I'm glad most people don't follow that horrible advice.

And you not giving viable coupe options says a lot.
I never said sedans are ugly. I just think that a young man should be driving something sportier like a Mustang, Camaro, Genesis, even a Civic. Something along those lines. I understand that at a young age most people can't exactly be choosers, but I personally would never activley seek out a Oldsmobile sedan or that thing that looks like a tissue box on wheels (now xB IS ugly and they admit to it).

I love my Oldsmobile rectangle. I'm 26 now, I've had it since I was 22. When I was 16-18, I drove an '86 Cadillac rectangle. I don't think I've ever met a person that disliked either. I certainly get compliments all the time.

Coupes annoy me. I also have an '89 Buick Riviera. While I do like the car a lot, visibility is compromised due to the large rear pillars.

Hey I need to buy a car too! I posted in the Automotive thread already.

I can't believe I'm saying this, but I might go check out a Hyundai Santa Fe. A Hyundai. I can't even say it. Hee-yundai? Hondai? Hundai?

Anyway I actually like how they look and they are supposed to be decent cars:

I have heard their sedans are solid too. Who woulda thunk.

None of those are cheap options either. Most people in their 20s don't have money to piss away on mustangs and camaros.

Hyundai has made a lot of strides in the last decade. They're pretty good, reliable and cheap cars.

And most recently (post 2008-2009), they have been putting out some good looking cars. I'm sure a lot of Hyundai's 2004-2005 or later might be worth looking into. Especially with that $7k budget.

They have a pretty healthy lineup now, with cars ranging from the Accent through the Equus.

My brother just took delivery of a new 2013 Santa Fe Sport loaded out (2.0T, Tech and Leather/Premium packages) a couple of months ago. Very nice CUV with lots of gadgets (remote start via iPhone and the little welcome/goodbye jingles on start/shutdown are hilarious), and it's pretty peppy with the 2.0T, though the steering feels like you're playing a video game.

Nice looking, comfortable interior (particularly with the saddle-colored leather option) with lots of space, too.

The Genesis is a Hyundai so it may be pretty cheap and the Civic is an economical car. There are other coupes that have that sporty look to them. My thing is, you have your whole life to be stuck driving a station wagon. May as well drive something fun that can hit a corner or two while you can, if you can.

Interesting, because one of the things I've heard is that the passenger/trunk space is pretty cramped with that third row. I mean I'm pretty sure a Prius has a larger trunk:

Anyway - sorry to derail, but yeah you might want to look into a used Hyundai.

Gen Coupe starts at $24-25K with the 2.0T. I'm not a huge fan of the new nose treatment on the GC, but the 274-hp engine is a ton more stout than 210-hp engine in the pre-2013 cars.

The 2-row car is the Santa Fe Sport, which is what he's driving. The three-row model in your image is coming later to replace the Veracruz (I don't think it's on sale yet). That said, I was strictly talking about passenger room - both of us are over 6' and I can comfortably sit in the seat behind him in that car with legroom to spare with a fairly good-sized cargo area behind me, since there isn't a third row.

Hun-day.

They start at $25k.... That's not cheap for most.

I live in the South. All we have is big straight roads. Give me a good highway cruiser any day of the week. I've spent too much of my life on the interstate to want anything else.

What a young man should be driving is whatever he goddamn well pleases.

Just noticed your weather predicament. I say a Subie Impreza. Great AWD and seriously reliable. MPG honestly isn't the best due to the AWD, but it's very fun to drive. I myself got my Leggy FULLY loaded including wiper defrosters, heated everything, leather (not really a good thing), sunroof, custom mats, friggin' etc for under $18k with 12.5k miles and put $3k down for low under $250 payments at 52 months. You can get the Impreza cheaper I'm sure. And if you can get a used WRX, you can have fun customizing at your leisure!

never ask gaf for car advice, they just fucking ignore what you can afford and start dick waving luxury cars.

If your on the east coast you can get a steal on a flood damaged car with super low miles.

To actually answer the OP, it's hard to go wrong with a used Toyota Corolla if you're just looking for basic transportation.

They're fairly cheap, decent on gas and tough as nails.

In my experience they're usually overpriced for the range. For $7,000 it probably has easily 100k-110k+ miles on it or like 10 years or so old. Only downside to them and why I don't really recommend them anymore.

lol So that's why those Navy ass holes come to my city off the carriers in the big ass 80s Cadillacs painted Florida Gators colors with 30-inch rims looking like a stage coach.

My gf has a Kia Soul. I've been very impressed with it. I'd probably consider buying a Kia now after driving it. It has had no problems and is surprisingly nice, considering the price.

Also, i know several people with Hyundais who have had problems. I don't think i would buy a hyundaiafter Hearing about the issues people have had with them.
I'm in the same boat, looking for a new car with good mpgs. My problem it's that i want something more fun or unique than a honda, for example.

No male in his 20s with no kids should be driving anything but a coupe.

What? Thats pretty risiculous. Im 22 and would drive a 4 door M3 over any coupe anyday. I like coupes a lot but theres more sedans id like.

Looks awesome, its clear you take care of it. If only these cars drove as nice as they look.

Also if you buy a prius, you have horrible taste in cars and should get the bus instead.

I get poeple arent into cars, nothing wrong with that. But they look hideous and have engines that would be better suited in washing machines.

Terrible fucking cars.

I haven't driven one, but I've spent a decent amount of time riding in a couple. The Prius seems decently comfortable and roomy. Tough to argue with the fuel economy too. I wouldn't buy one, because to me, if I want to save money on gas, I'll buy a Geo Metro. But I can see their use as a rental for a long trip, or as a taxi, which are my experiences with the car.

Sorry i shouldve clarified, i meant solely as buying it as your own personal car.

I understood, and I don't disagree. Price-wise, they don't really make sense in most cases. I was just providing examples where the Prius can make sense. I'm not fundamentally opposed to hybrids. In fact, the idea has always interested me since I first heard of it, and I'm a fan of the Chevy Volt (electric engines are cool). But the Volt makes no sense from a financial standpoint either. If I bought one, it would be because I liked the car, not to save money (because I wouldn't, not even close).

The Prius's looks don't really bother me. It's designed around efficiency. I won't begrudge that, as that's the point of the vehicle. Now, the Nissan Leaf, on the other hand, that's a car that's ugly for no reason.

side-sidenote: airbags are a literal lifesaver! I was doing 45 and slammed right into the other car, direct impact. Got out of my car without a scratch, not even a bruise.

Uh... my family's car got hit by an oversized pickup (with at least a thousand pounds of tools loaded in it to boot) at 75MPH while we were stopped at a red light. This was before airbags. The only reason any of us were injured at all is that my mom hit her knee on the bottom of the steering wheel, which shattered her kneecap.
The force pushed our car into the next car, which hit the next car, which hit the next car, which hit the next car. All of them were still attached when the tow truck came.

In rear-end pile-ups, the people towards the rear carry more fault because they didn't put enough distance to avoid the person in front.

Not necessarily true at all. Ever heard of a swoop and squat? Hell, I've had people almost clip the front of my car passing me too close several times.

That's different. If you haven't established your presence in the lane (~3 seconds I believe), you'll be at fault whether it's front or rear damage.

A break in the case happened. a witness came forward and said that she saw that I had the green light and the guy I hit ran the red light.

Hopefully it isn't too late for me to get money for my car from his insurance agency!

What intersection was it at?

Someone caved in the corner of my mom's Elantra, about 3 neighbors told her who it was an hour later, and the driver eventually came back and fessed up themselves. You'll probably have more come out of the woodwork.

2006+ Elantra: Good safety scores, no major reliability issues, solid MPGs.

First Generation Ford Fusion also but they might be a bit above the bracket.

Also if you buy a prius, you have horrible taste in cars and should get the bus instead.

Can you turn a wrench?
If yes buy a BMW

If no buy a soulless honda.

There are some craaaaazy cool opinions centered in reality.

Well, I made my choice, which might puzzle the lot of you. Hell, I didn't realize what I was doing until I slipped my posterior into the soft leather seats and turned on the seat warmers...

My new car ended up being:

a 2007 Lincoln MKZ.

From the moment I sat in the car, I felt like it was the right car for me. I have always been old at heart, I guess.

Super clean
tan leather heated and cooled seats
6-disc CD
THX sound
Line-in for my phone
very peppy (especially for a grandpa car)
tons of leg room, front and back
tons of trunk space (like to keep my golf clubs on me at all times, just in case)
Pretty good gas mileage (averaging around 26 on my commute)
brand new tires + the snow tires that were on there
Not a scratch, stain, or ding on the entire car.
1-owner, farmer's wife who used it as a commuter car, all highway miles.

LOVING IT. Definitely feels like luxury with the memory seat and all the features, and I figure I can drive this thing for years before I will need to dump it. Laugh if you must, but I am enjoying this car like crazy!

I'm going to throw out another recommendation for a Mazda3. They're fantastic little cars. Mine has been dead reliable and is a blast to drive.

My wife has an '05 with 155k miles on it. I've put money into good oil for the changes, a brake job and the usual air filter and spark plugs, that's it. My '04 gave up after 150k with mods.

Yeah, a used Lincoln is sort of a hard market for a dealership. Old people want a new one, young people don't want to drive one.

I was just in the right place at the right time. My buddy knew the owner and had me go take a look at the lot. :)
