Been a long time since I last visited Athens.

Has it come up much in the past decade?

It wasn't too great for tourism when I was there. (everything seemed very old and under-maintained).

As someone who lives in suburbs around Athens i say stay away unless you absolutely need to see whatever ancient site is in there.

A lot of famous cities are ruined by over tourism or have just one attraction to take your selfie with and a bunch of scammers. That is why you should book a holiday to Birmingham instead.

This hurts to read :messenger_pensive:

I feel this way about London. Loved it in the 80's and 90's, you couldn't pay me enough to spend time there now.
Nah London is fine.

Actually pretty great for tourists.

Probably he'll for most normal people to live there these days.

If you're middle class it's great but getting harder.

I visit London a fair bit. And it's pretty surreal to contrast the way some talk about it online compared to the experience of being in it and the people I know who live there say the same.

Nah.

I've lived here for 20+ years. London is great.
Just to be clear, I was agreeing with you. By "some talk about it online" I meant the "London has fallen" types who talk about it like it's some lawless wasteland. It doesn't really line up with the actual experience of being there. But social media discourse will always lean towards sensationalism.

It's because people know what it was like 10 years ago, let alone 20, 30, 50 etc. it's a decline all across the west.

It's funny when it comes from someone who lives in burger town USA though with a higher homicide rate.

It literally posted its lowest homicide rate in recorded history, but you wouldn't know it if you just consumed social media.
