TowerFall adds Anita Sarkeesian skin

Plenty of guys missing the point of being "loosely based". Saying "She looks nothing like Anita" is like saying "That vampire looks nothing like Alucard!"

Qualo! And am I the only one hoping this is the start of a trend, and that the Senran Kagura games are the next to follow suit?

Seriously though, this is ace, and gives me an excuse to fire up TowerFall again!

She's supposed to be...a researcher...a media critic...right? So in some ways she's like a scientist.

Reproducing characteristics of her physical likeness in a game is.....I don't know...it misses the point, I guess.

How many times do you focus on physical attributes with scientists / sociologists? It's pretty uncommon to make that the centerpoint.

I can see where you're coming from, but I think you may be over-thinking it a little bit. I just find it to be a warm and nice gesture myself. It would be hard to make her a *character* based solely on her work/thoughts.

Had they made her into a boobalicious doll, that would be something else of course. But here she just looks sharp, smart and awesome.

For people saying it doesn't look like her, it's an existing character with a new costume. It's not meant to phsyically look like her. Hence the hoop earrings and the plaid shirt made into a cape.

This is the character the skin is an alt of:

I guess...I don't know...it's late.

It's just not sitting well with me for some reason.

Whatever...I'll sleep it off.

Em, how else could one make a visual tribute to a person?

The cloak pattern and hoop earrings are a nice homage.

I have to be honest it would be hilarious to me if they had gone the cheeky, cynical route and made some girl in a bright pink string bikini who bounces around and always needs to be rescued.

Had no idea she had this much support.

Haven't really followed the controversy, but I did catch her saying a few pretty obvious lies.

So this is weird to me.

I know. Trying to make your pre-conceived notions about reality fit with actual reality is quite hard, isn't it?

Despite the fact that I dislike her and disagree with her message and tactics, I have to admit the design the Towerfall devs came up with looks pretty great.

Well...I'd prefer something other than a visual tribute for someone who has made her name by her work and nothing else.

Her physical features are completely inconsequential...so to make that the highlight of the tribute....

Whatever it's late I'm going to bed.

I think you're overanalyzing it. She is clearly respected as a person by the Towerfall team, as a result of her work.

While her message is indeed what matters, they are just paying a simple tribute by putting a character inspired by her in the game. There's nothing wrong with immortalizing a personal hero of yours in a manner of your choosing, it's harmless.

so loosely based that it seems pointless as no one will understand its reference

Haven't heard of this game before, but I like this art style a lot.

I had, but had forgotten about it. It's a real shame it doesn't have any online, I don't have 3 friends to play it with :(.

Well they made the character and probably showed it to Anita and she probably went "Well geez, thanks guys, I'm glad my work has inspired you". And that's probably all that matters to the devs :p

I think that is actually a really really cool tribute......the devs stated before that they like the work she did and now they show us that theyreally mean it.

Interesting how they're focusing on Anita *the person* for the tribute when it's really her message and her work that matter here.

I don't know...seems weird.

Her “Tropes vs Women in Games” video series gave us a valuable new lens through which to assess our character designs.

It seems that her message and work has been received and implemented in the game design...?

Oh! That explains a lot. I thought they'd actually try to make the character look like Sarkeesian.

But isn't that how "tribute" works? You make a song, then attach a name on it. You make an institute, then attach a name on it. Et cetera. TowerFall is a game, so they made a character, then attached her name on it.

Physical features are inconsequential to her works, yes, but going by that train of thought, then the only "proper" way to make a tribute to somebody is to make another similar work of the same or greater rigor and then attach her name on it. Heck, you could argue that even the name is not important to the work. So why make a tribute at all?

I will never understand the notion of adding character skins of celebrities, even less so of internet celebrities.
You're getting stuck on the celebrity word I think. Think of it as more like putting in a person (who's work) you admire.

I'd say that most creators do this in some level at least, not skins that is, but in general put their idols to their work, whether it's just a character in some way inspired by the person or even a theme in the game.

I'm not the biggest fan of Anita, but if her work inspires artists to make more unique designs and go for something more creative than "chick in metal bikini wearing some cape", why the hell not? People get inspired by different things, as simple as that. *shrug*

I probably shouldn't have bothered finding out how GG supporters are reacting to this.

I couldn't resist either.

This just killed what little interest I had in the game to begin with.
Shitty 8 bit graphics, check

> "Multiplayer game of the year" - Chris Plante, check

Yeah, the trash is where this goes
The devs saying Sarkeesian is an inspiration kind of makes me question their competency and very weary of any future games of theirs.
I dunno, I think this could increase sales, given the nature of the game and the opportunity it presents...
That sucks. I was interested and now I'm never going to buy it.
When will developers realize that having controversial Youtube critics that accuse video games and the people that play them as misogynistic is only going to drive away consumers?
I never heard of this game before now... Well, I guess this is the chance to show people that this is an actual consumer revolt, right? And avoid buying the game.

Spread the word everyone.
Sweet, so she's going to be a boring Mary Sue character in yet another lame overhyped "retro style throwback" game that TOTALLY hasn't gotten stale.

I can barely contain my excitement. Truly this is a revolutionary in video gaming history.

The hate is so thick, like the best milkshakes.

That last comment is fucking amazing. Like you can tell that person has seen absolutely zilch about the game except what's in the content of the post and maybe the title screen.

"Mary sue" lmfao
"Overhyped" LOL9

I just can't with gamers

I don't think anything about that screams "Anita Sarkeesian" other than perhaps the earrings, maybe?

Edit:
Ah, it's a costume. Alright then.

That was my thought too. They clearly don't realise that it's a skin or that the game is 2 years old. God help them if they realise it was widely considered the only reason to own an Ouya.

Pretty nice gesture, and very kind words from the devs. And interesting seeing yet another dev thank her for the work and acknowledge that it helped them.

Cool. I still need to get TowerFall. I was going to get it a couple weeks ago during the 10% off thing but I bought a PSN card that had somehow already been redeemed and now I'm trying to get it refunded so I can buy another one....
