Are there any communities or databases which keep track of how much the large chains pay for trade-ins of particular games? Shops very rarely advertise how much they will pay outside of one-off promotions.

I live in the UK and am looking to shift a reasonable amount of stuff, yet the only site I have found which lets me check the price is CEX. If such a community does not exist it would seem like a pretty useful thing to set up.

Go the Ebay route, you'll get a load more and won't have to spend it at the one store.

Thing is that I don't have anything particularly valuable. I think the ebay, shipping and paypal fees would easily negate the extra money.

There are plenty of good swap sites full of gamers like yourself who are sick of trade in prices.

You just list up your collection, and browse for stuff you want- then propose swaps.
If you have rubbish games then you might struggle.

CAG has a trade-in wiki, but I'm pretty sure it's US only.

Rule of thumb for GameStop. Go to GameStop.com and look up the prices for a used copy of the game you're thinking of trading in.

If the game is over $20, divide the listed used cost of the game by 3.
If the game is under $20, divide the listed used cost of the game by 4.

Viola. The system ain't perfect but it's pretty close.
