Just saw this tonight, I really enjoyed it. The trailers made it seem like more of an action movie (like Holmes was going to be doing some Jet Li shit), but the actual film is more subdued.

One thing I didn't get was the

nigh-invisible string that Watson nearly tripped over near the beginning. Looking back, it's obvious that this was Holmes' first clue that Blackwood's feats were not as supernatural as they seemed (a fact reinforced when Watson really does trip over the wire at the docks setting off the explosions), but not knowing what kind of trap it was attached to bugs the crap out of me.

Though I must admit Blackwood's master plan was laughably far-fetched. May have worked for a while in England, but the moment they tried to invade the US or another industrialized nation, they would've blown his magical ass out of the water.

The United States came fresh off the Civil War, so I doubt it would've been so one sided.

I agree. It was really awesome seeing Holme's figure out the most efficient way to knock em senseless in slow motion and than seeing it all play out.

Thought it was pretty mediocre and forgettable, myself. It wasnt bad, but it wasnt especially good either. And despite being a RDJ fan, I thought he was woefully miscast here and his performance didnt work at all for me. Conversely, I felt Jude Law was pitch perfect in his role. I dont regret seeing Sherlock Holmes, but I also wont regret never seeing it again.

I loved this movie. Quite a whole lot more than Avatar, even. I think I need to summarize my thoughts a little bit better

It had charm. A lot! There is almost no time during the movie that I wasn't laughing or actively anticipating something fun to happen. And it did happen. As an adventure movie, this>>>>>> transformers 2 by a whole lot

Things I didn't like
- Cliffhanger! I mean I like it, but I liked this movie too much to wait for the next one, same thing as Iron Man 2 and Star Trek 2
- The CGI. I am sorry, Star Trek's CGI is the way to go! Props and Sets>CGI all the time. I couldn't for the life of me believe this was London.

All in all it was a very fun movie, I don't think we've got a decent adventure movie recently (transformers 2 was shit) and this is just right

Yeah, Holmes was a skilled bare-knuckled boxer and prizefighter, and beat Moriarty with Bartitsu.

Hopefully, the sequel has an improved (see: non-ludicrous) plot, but otherwise, I actually quite liked it. Ritchie's direction is perfectly fitted for this venue. The film feels more lean, witty and fresh than your typical adventure film, and really, there hasn't been an adventure film this fun since Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. The key to this is the dynamic between RDJ and Jude Law - their chemistry bubbles along fantastically throughout - and it's great to see it recognized that the relationship between those two characters is central to making these stories work.

Yeah, such an awful solution to how Sherlock survived his battle with Moriarty. One of the few times I was disappointed with Doyle's writing of SH. For the record I'm not just commenting on his sudden mastery of combat but on the entire ridiculousness of the scene, even for a SH story.

RockNRolla kind of suffered as well from it's clear planning for a sequel. So many extraneous scenes for a guy who wouldn't be the main character until like, the second film. Toby Kebbel was great anyways though. Ritchie holds in the sequel building reins a bit easier this time (albeit, still far too definitive).

Yeah, I think it would have just been better to leave Moriarty in the carriage and maybe just leave him referred to as a Professor. Still, we'll have to wait and (hopefully) see where they're going with this.

Despite my being weary of the movie based on the trailer, I thought it was pretty good when I ended up seeing it. Certainly not my ideal depiction of Holmes, but there were some nice touches and it was very fun to watch. There seems to be a lot of praise for the 'prediction' fight scenes but I didn't care much for them, to be honest.

I think the sequel could be a really great movie if they improve upon a few issues of the first. It could be very similar to the progression Nolan's Batman series has had. Batman Begins had a relatively no-name villain (at least to the masses) and was pretty good. The Dark Knight featured the iconic villain of the series and was spectacular. I can't wait to see what Ritchie has in store for us.

The movie did have an air to it that everyone already understood the basic sherlock Holmes premises, which is why people like felt kind of in the dark when the Moriarty shit was going on.

I do believe it was a great place to start, though. No real other reboot films begins in at the end of a relationship. I just think they didn't explore the angle as extensively as they could've (

I don't know how much you know about the Sherlock Holmes stories, but one direction the trilogy could go -

Over the course of the 50+ SH short stories, Watson goes from being single, to engaged/married, and later on, his wife dies and he becomes a widower and moves back in with Holmes.

My best guess is that this movie trilogy might just accelerate that. Have Watson living on his own in movie 2, but have his wife die (most likely at the hands of Moriarty?) near the end. Then in movie 3 they would be together again.

Come to think of it, Holmes himself "dies" at the hands of Moriarty in the story. If this trilogy wants to REALLY follow the Star Wars path and have movie 2 be empire, they could "kill off" Holmes and Watson's wife, and leave him on his own at the conclusion.

Just saw it. I really liked it. I haven't read a lot of the Holmes stories, but from what I'm familiar with, the movie was a bit more actiony, though from a realistic "period piece" point of view I'd imagine a lot of fights would actually happen.

What I thought was really cool was the slow-mo explosion.

I thought the actor they cast as Mary was horribly wrong.

Knowing that the main dynamic in the show House is based off of Sherlock Holmes, it was tough not to see all of the parallels between the two.

I know I enjoyed a film when Im excited about sequel talk.

I expected a film I would be groaning about every five minutes as the trailer lead me to believe it was an over the top, no brains action film. I still like those but not when they pretend to be Sherlock Holmes. I thought the action, drama and detective work was well balanced actually.

I think someone compared it to Pirates of the Caribbean. Good comparison, and while I liked the second two PotC films they werent as good as the first. I hope SH is better at maintaining that quality.

I've had the Sherlock Holmes complete novels and stories books for years but since I never read I obviously never touched them. After watching this film, I absolutely loved it and the world/characters so I am currently reading the books. I'm glad I waited though, now I picture RDJ and Judd Law as their respective characters and its making the book that much more interesting to me (RDJ is my favourite actor atm).

I had so many misconceptions about Sherlock Holmes but the movie is surprisingly true to the novels (so far anyway). RDJ totally fits into Sherlocks dialogue, its great.

That's EXACTLY what I leaned over and told my son. At the beginning when they are looking down at the Monks and the sacrafice. I told him Sherlock needs a sniper rifle to take them all out and run down and pick up the expensive necklace.
