Transcript Of Chat With Fight Night 3 Exec Producer

I was late to the chat and only got the following:

(I also tried to spilt the questions up to make it easier for you guys to read)

Type_49: Hi Kudo
Fri Feb 17 09:35:52 PST 2006
rellim311: So Kudo who are the final 5 boxers in the game? The EA website has 27 bios listed but you said that the final roster is 32? So who are the missing 5?
Fri Feb 17 09:35:52 PST 2006
Kudo: we have some secret unlockable boxers and boxers that are not selectable until you can beat them in career mode. we do not announce the unlockable boxers and leave those for people to find while playing career mode!

-------------

Fri Feb 17 09:36:54 PST 2006
rellim311: According to the ign.com preview, lag was an issue with only two people playing online. will this be resolved by the time the game ships?
Fri Feb 17 09:36:54 PST 2006
Kudo: the online gameplay is fast in the final version and there should not be any lag unless playing over a very slow connection.
Fri Feb 17 09:38:11 PST 2006

-------------

TheBigUnit622: I was wondering if there have been any new mini-games added. We all know about the Stun Punch First Person mini game and the Mini-games between rounds are good. Are there any others? And were any others considered but not put in the game?
Fri Feb 17 09:38:11 PST 2006
Kudo: the first person stun punch minigame is definitely the big in the ring new minigame. We have always wanted a good first person perspective fighting element and this adds a lot to the gameplay! We also talked about doing an in-fighting or clinching minigame early on but liked the idea of the 1st person view much better

Fri Feb 17 09:38:45 PST 2006
PRGUY85: Kudo, when will Fight Night include a true indepth career mode ala Victorious Boxers 2? I just think that boxing is not getting the same indepth career treatment as other sports like baseball and football. Could it be because of the nature of the sport or the low number of people who are true fans of it? Does that also influence the level of boxing simulation that goes into the game?
Fri Feb 17 09:40:09 PST 2006
Kudo: awesome question!!! i think the nature of boxing as a sport means there are not as many career elements to play with as it is more individual fights and boxers as opposed to the same teams going through a big season each year. But we really added to the depth of career mode in Fight Night Round 3 with milestone fights, rivalries, and so many new boxer styles. We always try and make a game that is fun for people to play while keeping true to the sport of boxing.

-------------

Fri Feb 17 09:42:26 PST 2006
KOArtist: Kudo, is the parrying "toned down" at all compared to Round 2?
Fri Feb 17 09:42:26 PST 2006
Kudo: a lot of people comment on the long parry times in Fight Night. The reason parry times are long in the game is that it gives people using defense an advantage and increases the value of counter punching. Defense and counter punching is something really lacking in boxing and fighting games before Fight Night. The parry times, while a bit longer than in real life, get the overall gameplay to be more skill based, and more like real boxing instead of a non-stop punch fest. But parry timings have been tuned based on style so you can play with longer times or shorter.

-------------

Fri Feb 17 09:43:40 PST 2006
Tim: Kudo, can you talk about the realism of the blows and effect they have on the body? Basically, how were you able to pull that off? What's the process?
Fri Feb 17 09:43:40 PST 2006
Kudo: Body shots are devestating in boxing and we wanted that to be a big part of the combat in our game. Body punches have lots of long term effects in Fight Night Round 3 just like in real life. Body shots tire your opponent, slow their movement speed, and cause hands to drop setting up devestating head shots!

-------------

Fri Feb 17 09:45:53 PST 2006
rellim311: Kudo, what steps have you guys made to get tyson in the game, if any. What is the story there, will iron mike just not do it or does he ask for too much money. this seems to come up every year. give of the scoop as to why tyson still isn't on the roster.
Fri Feb 17 09:45:53 PST 2006
Kudo: obviously would love to have tyson in the game. it is hard signing the boxers and unlike in other sports, there is no boxers union or way to sign all the boxers at once. we have to negotiate with each individually. Iron Mike has a big entourage and getting a deal done is not very easy. It is the same type of logistical problems that keep big fights between the best boxers from happening. But you can still create a boxer that looks like tyson in our create a character!

Fri Feb 17 09:47:18 PST 2006
PRGUY85: Kudo, does stamina play any factor this year? Does throwing lots of haymakers make you slower or more vulnerable in the latter round? And is excessive ring movement (running) has any effect on stamina?
Fri Feb 17 09:47:18 PST 2006
Kudo: Stamina is a huge factor in Fight Night Round 3! It affects your punching power, punching speed, agility, ability to take punches...pretty much your whole boxer! All of the Impact Punches take a lot of energy to throw especially if you miss with them. All of the punches, if the other boxer can block or avoid them, will take energy away from a boxer.

-------------

Fri Feb 17 09:48:28 PST 2006
Noisy_Ninja: Have there been any games in the past over the years that may have given you idea's or inspiration in creating fight night? Or just from an initial gameplay standpoint? Also PS2's Victorious Boxers had a similar gameplay style to Fight Night, have you ever played it?
Fri Feb 17 09:48:28 PST 2006
Kudo: Of course we played Victorious Boxers and all other boxing and fighting games. Most of the games we played - including VB - did not really give you good control over your boxer in the ring. VB was better than other games, but still gave you no control over your fists in the ring and defense was hard to use. These are things we really wanted to fix with the Fight Night series.

Fri Feb 17 09:49:33 PST 2006
KOArtist: Kudo, I noticed in FN 2004, you could punch up/out from bob and weave positions, but in Round 2, this feature appeared to be gone. Is it back for Round 3 by any chance? I really loved how bobbing & weaving was as effective as parrying and blocking in the first game. Thanks
Fri Feb 17 09:49:33 PST 2006
Kudo: WOW!!! Great observation. Always really nice to talk to somebody who knows the game so well. Punching while bobbing and weaving has totally been fixed!

-------------

Fri Feb 17 09:50:25 PST 2006
PRGUY85: Do you plan on supporting online leagues in the future? Like Madden and Madden Nation, etc...
Fri Feb 17 09:50:25 PST 2006
Kudo: There are lots of fight night leagues all around on the net. We are looking at getting an EA site set up for Fight Night

-------------

Fri Feb 17 09:51:17 PST 2006
Motown: Hey Kudo, Big Ups for the progression of the Fight Night series...my question is can you Kd or Ko or open cuts w/ regular punches besides Haymakers,Stuns,etc... punches ie uppercuts, hooks, straight rights etc... thank you
Fri Feb 17 09:51:17 PST 2006
Kudo: yup!!! regular punches are still powerful and can cause KO's and cuts. Just takes more of a volley of punches instead of one big punch like with the Impact Punches!

-------------

Fri Feb 17 09:51:46 PST 2006
TheBigUnit622: Kudo, when creating your fighter, does the equipment you choose have an effect on your attributes (i.e. Some gloves have +2 to power, etc)?
Fri Feb 17 09:51:46 PST 2006
Kudo: All of the boxing gear in Fight Night Round 3 has an impact on the gameplay!
Fri Feb 17 09:52:31 PST 2006

-------------

doubledown: was that you in the back of the IGN tourney video part 2, or does IGN have a kudo doppleganger with crazy mullet-hair and elvis glasses?
Fri Feb 17 09:52:31 PST 2006
Kudo: yeah that was me!!! always love fighting the IGN guys. Mullet hair??? Mullet hair??? that one hurt more than an impact punch. :e)

-------------

Fri Feb 17 09:53:21 PST 2006
rellim311: kudo, a follow up to my question about the 5 remaining boxers. are the remaining 5 different boxers, are boxers that have already been mentioned just in different weight classes?
Fri Feb 17 09:53:21 PST 2006
Kudo: Not boxers in different weight classes but seperate boxers - EA sponsored fighters as well.

-------------

Fri Feb 17 09:55:07 PST 2006
rellim311: Kudo, what is up with the robes this year. Personally I don't care much but this is another question that comes up every year. It seems that if the "The King" From Burger King can have a robe then the boxers themselves should be able to enter the ring with one.
Fri Feb 17 09:55:07 PST 2006
Kudo: This is one of my favorite questions!!! There are a lot of requests for robes for sure. We are always so focused on innovating in the area of gameplay and graphics and things that greatly affect the fun factor of the game. Robes are something we want in the game as well but just did not get in this year. SO TELL EVERYONE YOU KNOW...WE WILL TRY AND GET ROBES IN SOON!!!!

-------------

Fri Feb 17 09:55:34 PST 2006
Noisy_Ninja: Being this the next generation of consoles and games, i was wondering if we will ever see bloodstains, spit, and sweat on the canvas? Or does the "T" rating prevent you from adding that little extra bit?
Fri Feb 17 09:55:34 PST 2006
Kudo: This is currently a game rating issue. Blood stains and such on the canvas is a no no.

-------------

Fri Feb 17 09:56:15 PST 2006
Motown: Kudo Tommy "Hitman" Hearns played a HUGE roll of Welterweight Rivals of the 80's... will we see him in the series anytime soon?
Fri Feb 17 09:56:15 PST 2006
Kudo: he is another boxer i would love to have in the game. Just were unable to get a deal struck with him. i am a huge hitman fan.

-------------

Fri Feb 17 09:56:59 PST 2006
PRGUY85: Is there any way to trade created boxers online? The sculpting system works great yet its hard to create a boxer from someone else on the game since its not numerical? Also are attributes numerical like on 2004 or just visual bars like on Round 2?
Fri Feb 17 09:56:59 PST 2006
Kudo: we use the analog sculpting system and there is no way to trade characters online currently but will get to work on that one!

-------------

Fri Feb 17 09:57:33 PST 2006
rellim311: Can you knock someone out "cold" to the point where they don't even move when they hit the mat?
Fri Feb 17 09:57:33 PST 2006
Kudo: well, they still twitch around on the canvas some but you can knock somebody the heck out for sure!

-------------

Fri Feb 17 09:58:32 PST 2006
PRGUY85: Boxing is a true competition sport and I think this game would greatly benefit from a spectator mode. Microsoft said it was possible with 360, it was possible on PC and PS2 as well, so why not include it on Round 3?
Fri Feb 17 09:58:32 PST 2006
Kudo: would really like to get a spectator mode in fight night as well. We just focused on other areas of our online play we wanted to improve. but would like to get this going and tie it to a promoter mode online as well.

-------------

Fri Feb 17 09:58:38 PST 2006
kuroghost: Obviously Mike Tyson is not available due to contract conflicts, but is his peakaboo style available in the game? A lot of us want to re-create Iron Mike!
Fri Feb 17 09:59:23 PST 2006
Jokerwild2345: I wanted to know if Felix Trinidad is gonna be in any of the future games? and y he isn't in this game?

-------------

Fri Feb 17 09:59:23 PST 2006
Kudo: There is good chance Tito will be in our game in the future. This year just was not able to get a good deal done with him. but love him as a fighter and want him back in the game.

-------------

Fri Feb 17 10:00:29 PST 2006
PRGUY85: Kudo, Im the webmaster and commissioner of the FNBC, a league site you have visited on Gamespy. Our members want to know how EA will sponsor league play and community features, like trading CABs, downloadable content, etc...
Fri Feb 17 10:00:29 PST 2006
Kudo: i thought we would send all league players to FNBC! :e) Seriously though, working on getting some EA leagues going for Fight Night!
Fri Feb 17 10:01:38 PST 2006

-------------

kuroghost: is rocky marciano going to be in the game or not, if not why is he in the psp version?
Fri Feb 17 10:01:38 PST 2006
Kudo: Rocky Marciano is not in Fight Night Round 3 as we focused on some of the big rivalries in boxing this year getting guys like Marvin Hagler to fight against Leonard, Duran, etc. But we wanted to have exclusive content in each version of the game as well.
Fri Feb 17 10:02:34 PST 2006

-------------

KOArtist: Kudo, with "EA BIG" as part of EA Sports, do you ever think the series may ever "split" into two games? One being a more arcadish version of boxing by EA Big, and the other more of a true boxing simulation from EA Sports? Thanks
Fri Feb 17 10:02:34 PST 2006
Kudo: i think a more arcadish version of boxing would be a great idea and we already have lots of awesome design ideas here. this is a definite possibility.

-------------

Fri Feb 17 10:03:24 PST 2006
Type_49: Hey Kudo, are you guys planning any name recognition for CAB's instead of using the list of predifined nick names?
Fri Feb 17 10:03:24 PST 2006
Kudo: not this year but something we really want to do.

-------------

Fri Feb 17 10:04:40 PST 2006
kuroghost: Why not just make the game M rated then, so we can have stains and more nlood?
Fri Feb 17 10:04:40 PST 2006
Kudo: well, there are lots of people who love to play Fight Night that are not able to get mature games cause too young. Want everybody who wants to enjoy Fight Night to be able to. Plus, we have lots of nice cuts, swelling, and damage effects on the boxers for sure!

-------------

Fri Feb 17 10:05:47 PST 2006
rickyb516: Kudo, sorry if this was already asked but how far in detail is the ESPN integrated with this years game or is it just ESPN online everywhere and ESPN classics?
Fri Feb 17 10:05:47 PST 2006
Kudo: Not already asked!! We have ESPN classics and an ESPN ticker online. But we also use ESPN announcer Joe Tessitore for commentary and have Wednesday Night Fights, Friday Night Fights, and ESPN PPV fights as well!

-------------

Fri Feb 17 10:06:58 PST 2006
Toma: Hey kudo, i sent you an email talking about the RANDOM EFFECT, did you ever read about it, you were the ONLY person i ever told the idea to.
Fri Feb 17 10:06:58 PST 2006
Kudo: This is hard as since i work at a game company, i am restricted from reading game ideas that are emailed to me so i do not take other people's ideas. :e) but email me again and say hi! sorry if i did not respond. i am not able to respond to game ideas like that!

-------------

Fri Feb 17 10:07:36 PST 2006
kuroghost: So Kudo, can we FIGHT as "the king" that would be funny as hell!
Fri Feb 17 10:07:36 PST 2006
Kudo: he does appear in the game, but BK did not want him fighting. Too bad i know!!!
Fri Feb 17 10:08:40 PST 2006

-------------

Fri Feb 17 10:08:41 PST 2006
RCUS: Wassup Kudo, I am the GGL.com Fight Night Round 2 world champion - will there be a competition on the scale of the Madden Challenge for FNR3 this year?
Fri Feb 17 10:08:41 PST 2006
Kudo: GGL.com champ huh? would love to fight you online!!! trying to get leagues together for sure. might take us a bit to work up to Madden Challenge level.

-------------

Fri Feb 17 10:09:16 PST 2006
hollywoodjdfc: What are the chances of adding Teddy Atlas as a commentator since hes also part of the ESPN Friday Night fights crew. And he works with your current announcer Joe Tessitore! How about Larry Merchant from HBO?
Fri Feb 17 10:09:16 PST 2006
Kudo: Talking to Teddy about being in the game. Might not get HBO announcers as we are working mostly with ESPN now.

-------------

Fri Feb 17 10:09:45 PST 2006
hollywoodjdfc: Love the FN series, any chance of tying into any of the major governing bodies like the WBC, WBA, IBF etc. to add to the already fantastic realism of the series?
Fri Feb 17 10:09:45 PST 2006
Kudo: Good chance for sure! Looking at this already for future versions.

-------------

Fri Feb 17 10:09:59 PST 2006
drewc0311: Kudo, I noticed on the demo, the knockdowns were a little choppy. Has this been addressed in the final copy?
Fri Feb 17 10:09:59 PST 2006
Kudo: yup! these are smoothed out for the final game for sure!

-------------

Fri Feb 17 10:10:42 PST 2006
Motown: Not to beat a dead horse, but are the remaining 5 Licensed Boxers...can you throw us a bone here?
Fri Feb 17 10:10:42 PST 2006
Kudo: some are characters we created here at EA. Some are real life people!

Fri Feb 17 10:11:56 PST 2006
rellim311: Kudo, can you talk about some of the other sponsers in the game? I have seen Dodge and Burger King. Do these sponserships affect your boxer? It seemed in the gamespot preview that having the Burger King sponsership put "The King" in your corner and it gave your boxer more heart?
Fri Feb 17 10:11:56 PST 2006
Kudo: all of the sponsorships give you in game rewards. Some directly like the King being in your corner giving you heart. Other times you get big pay days which allow you to buy more gear or help you in training.

-------------

Fri Feb 17 10:13:02 PST 2006
rickyb516: Kudo, two questions. How much have you guys been working on the PS3 version of this game and what new additions could we expect. Also, has there been discussion about a Fight Night Round 4 already in the works?
Fri Feb 17 10:13:02 PST 2006
Kudo: Not sure if you saw the PS3 video at E3 but you can tell already Fight Night is looking awesome on the that platform! And yes, already kicking around some FN4 ideas but that game will not be coming for a bit so mostly focused on Fight Night Round 3!

-------------

Fri Feb 17 10:14:32 PST 2006
KOArtist: Kudo, in the future do you think you might ever hire a few of the pro boxers that you feature in the game to help tweak the gameplay and make Fight Night "truer to the sport" and a more genuine boxing experience?
Fri Feb 17 10:14:32 PST 2006
Kudo: We have worked with the boxers in the game each year to make the game more realistic. Our new hudless gameplay system and the create style feature are things we worked with boxers on extensively. The great thing about the boxers is that many are gamers and they can give you feedback that not only makes Fight Night truer to the sport but makes it a more fun game to play!

-------------

Fri Feb 17 10:14:53 PST 2006
nas7232: Are their more than 1 belt in a weight class?
Fri Feb 17 10:14:53 PST 2006
Kudo: yup! you can win multiple title belts in one class or change weight classes as well.

-------------

Fri Feb 17 10:16:05 PST 2006
Fomby: Hi Kudo - apologies if this has been asked... with the lack of 360's in consumer's hands, do you feel this will hurt the launch of FN3?
Fri Feb 17 10:16:05 PST 2006
Kudo: well, certainly if there were more xbox 360's out there that would be better! but Fight Night Round 3 is the best 360 game i have seen so far. I am sure as people are buying new 360's in the future Fight Night will be the first game they pick up!

-------------

Fri Feb 17 10:16:49 PST 2006
l337Bossman: Thanks for taking the time to do this Kudo. Is there a system to identify our rivals during career mode? Or are we supposed to remember those opponents who gave us a great fight?
Fri Feb 17 10:16:49 PST 2006
Kudo: the rivals will taunt you and you will get updates on their careers in a new movie window!

-------------

Fri Feb 17 10:17:22 PST 2006
RCUS: Do you have any tips on making the online experience less laggy, like should people on the west ALWAYS join the west server? My gamertag is RCUS btw if you wanna try and bring me down!
Fri Feb 17 10:17:22 PST 2006
Kudo: always good to play people closer to you for sure. RCUS huh? i will find you once game is released!

-------------

Fri Feb 17 10:18:07 PST 2006
rellim311: Kudo, what changes can we expect from the demo versus the final shipping version of the game? The demo is great and addicting. I have read in a few previews that the final build plays differently than the demo. In what way is that? Is it just faster?
Fri Feb 17 10:18:07 PST 2006
Kudo: lots of tuning. punches are faster. game is better balanced. Cutman minigame is in final version. Get up minigame in final version. Lots of additional stuff in final game!

-------------

Fri Feb 17 10:19:32 PST 2006
Type_49: Hey Kudo, any thoughts about having a fully customizable career mode, i know there are lots of pepole who hate fighting the old fighters, and loads who love to see Ali, Liston, Norton etc in there career mode. It would be great if we had the option to choose whos in the roster?
Fri Feb 17 10:19:32 PST 2006
Kudo: this is something we can look in to for future versions!! thanks so much for all the questions. was great talking to you all!!! Fight Night Round 3 comes out on Feb 22 on Xbox 360, PS2, Xbox, and PSP. Hope you have as much fun playing it as we did making it. see you online!!!!

I am sure i missed some of the questions but a full transcript is supposed to go up here soon...

"Kudo: Not sure if you saw the PS3 video at E3 but you can tell already Fight Night is looking awesome on the that platform! "

Hmm...

All I care about is this:

BURGERKING!

5c7b2e6e720ms.jpg

At first I was disappointed at not being to fight as Tha King, but then I realized how cool it will be just to have him in your corner online. Total rock.

The full transcript is up now, here is the stuff I missed...

Noisy_Ninja: Hey Kudo, Id first like to say that in my opinion, FN Round 2 was the best 2 player game of 2005 and im glad that someone's got the whole boxing thing right this time. And can't wait for the next round. My question to you is: Besides graphical upgrades, and new punches, and new characters, what new additions would you like to see, or area's you would like to perfect in the future installments of the series?

Kudo: i think we did a great job on innovating in Fight Night Round 3 in many areas. one of the features that makes the biggest difference is our create style feature. you can know build over 800 unique styles in the game. This really changes how each fighter fights. We always add new levels of user customization to the Fight Night franchise and think this can be expanded more in future versions.

cleasure138: what kind of Xbox Live support will there be in the new Fight Night? Will there be any Tournaments or Leagues?

Kudo: The thing i have always hated the most about online play is that everybody takes the dame max rating create a character online so everybody has the exact same character for online fights. This year you can now unlock new styles and train in career mode to get other abilities and then take your career mode character online. This will give you an edge over people who are just using max'ed out created characters. also, lots of achievements online and leagues popping up.

I got this game paid for already. Good to hear that the king is in the game. Though fighting with him would be sweet as hell. So is he a corner man in the game?

Fri Feb 17 10:18:07 PST 2006

Thank God!
