Tribes Ascend is now on Steam

People who REFUSE to spend money on a 'free to play' title are so adorable. Tribes Ascend is great and the devs deserve to be supported.
It depends on how it does it, and honestly Tribes Ascend DOES seem to be one of the better ones. I hate the idea of doing something like buying credit just to make actual progress, but buying the ability to have a permanent EXP boost? There's potential problems there too, but at least it doesn't feel like I'm buying gold or whatever to make progress period, like with Theme Park iOS. When a game does that I question the value of even playing it, though it helps that there's more to something like Tribes than building things to make money to build more things.

It's an issue for TDM not CTF. A Doombringers job is to sit on the flag with Super Heavy. The only suggestion i have is join a custom server where Doombringers are banned.

TF2 style hit boxes with Super Heavy, spamming FFs, and Mines that go 10 feet in the air are my problems with DMB during CTF. Heavily dependent on having a useful team to get through them once you have 2-3 heavies sitting up on the flag.

Chaingun is the least of my worries since its a slow weapon to my speed.

You don't need to spend money, but the game definitely deserves it.

I paid $30 for the VIP pack back in the beta, 6+ months ago, and still have some gold left. I've been using it sparingly on some XP boosts, a couple weapons, and minimal other stuff.

Play the game first, see what you like, and then decide how you want to pay some money for more variety. That's what you're paying for - variety. So you may as well figure out what you like first :-)

So first time playing Tribes and it's pretty damn fun. May pick up the starter pack though my cheapness says wait till it hits 75% off of it that even happens lol.

I would go for it. The 50% XP boost alone is worth it.

I actually just got into TA last week and now that it's on Steam I can see myself putting hundreds of hours into it. Really fun game that's easy to pick up and play in short bursts or 2 hour sessions.

I'm thinking about throwing them a bone and buying the $9.99 starter pack. By "special promotion" ending on July 4th is the Steam catalog referring to the $10 off sale or the availability of the pack?

I love this game, one of my GOTYs so far ! I had some problems with prerequists I had to download that've been keeping me from playing this game for 2-3 weeks now. I'll uninstall and reinstall on Steam, hopefully it works.

I made a Beowulf tank video a while back, I find them highly underrated.

I bought the $10 starter pack, which I hope I don't regret as I'm rather confused by numerous aspects of this games. I think I'm starting to get the hang of the skiing and jet-packing; I think the skiing would be more fun if it was just a Vanquish-style boost rather than contingent on slopes and gravity, though the rhythm when you jet up, fall and slide onto a slope is nice. Btw, my secondary weapon when playing as the Soldier (the thumper?) is a complete solid shade of black -- is this normal, or some sort of graphical hiccup I can fix? Also, are there ways to expand my gun's clip, or to change the weapons? And I used some gold to buy a second loadout, but it appears to have only the same weapons available as the first loadout -- so what's the point?

Hmm...

That'd be like changing Forza or Gran Turismo to have F-Zero style drifting.

Click on a loadout you own, then click on a weapon... you'll get other choices of weapons.

Finally can stop using a shortcut that bitches at me for using an "outdated" launcher when it clearly bloody isn't.

Copied the files into the steam folder, uninstalled old tribes, hello Steam Tribes :D

Already have most of the stuff in the starter pack though (lifetime 50% included). Dang.

Uninstalled old Tribes and downloaded the Steam version, got an error when "installing prerequisites" but ran fine on the 2nd attempt. Nice to see it kept all my settings.

Daily Deals are the way to go. I wait till I see something at least 50% off and then snap it up.

Cool, maybe my friends will actually play it now.

Don't understand people who only play content on Steam....

it's done well and easy. don't have to remember extra passwords and shit. I'm pretty much of the opinion that gaming doesn't exist on PC outside steam. I know that it does, but I don't care.

If I was younger and had more gaming time to play around with setups and stuff then maybe I would care, but I don't and I never will.

games are on steam, nintendo or xbox is pretty much how I currently view the world. I also have no real allegiance, if something better comes along, I'll jump, but I'm not taking 1000 different 'almost as good as' options.

Is there any Single Player? Even bot matches?

Target practice. Thats it. I can't imagine skiing against bots though. Either they'll be way too good or make artifical mistakes. Why not play against people?

When you start new, you'll get put into a newbie bracket and play with other beginners.

Is it just me, or does sniping really suck? Even when I hit people it seems to barely ping them. Getting headshots is a complete bitch too cause of the size of the maps.

So, anyone want to share tips on this game? I got the Starter Pack. I don't know much about each class, but the Soldier seems fun. I took down like 10 people in a row in one room; I like how it gives you that crunchy "hit" sound and shows the HP deducted (or is it points scored?) with each hit you land. I like the Soldier's offensive options; I just want to move even faster!

I would recommend to play Pathfinder first which is the classic Tribes class for skiing, capping, flag chasing, etc. Just learn to use the spinfusor disc and hit things while they are moving...you have to think about trajectory and physics like playing a game of pool or something, or er, if your objective was to hit the pool balls while they are moving...in 3D space...it is not very easy, but skilled players could hit other players while they are zooming through the air (and sometimes pretty consistently)...these airshots/MAs were a signature of the fun of the game.

Only had time to play this for about an hour today, but it feels great. Definitely feels like Tribes. The only small issue I ran into was not realizing the skiing binding is initially turned off in the menu. Once I fixed this everything was golden. I'm going to be putting a lot of time into this game. Starter pack has been purchased, can't wait to dig back in tonight.

Tribes CTF is still the best CTF in gaming.

Aim for incoming/outgoing flag cappers.

Don't worry about headshots. It doesn't do any extra damage (unless they recently changed something).

I'm still partial to Quake 3. Tribes CTF feels too much like you have to focus your entire gameplay effort on playing as a flag runner. If you've ever watched a professional do it, you understand what I mean. It stops being a shooter and starts being "mover" game. Quake 3 balanced the movement and shooting aspects of CTF much better.

This game. Man. Incredible stuff. Will get the Steam starter pack thing and try to rope in some friends to play with me this weekend.

This game was really fun! I will proapably not give up on BF3 and Starhawk and all the other online games I play now but I can sink some hours into this =)
Nailing people with that grenade-pistol is wicked fun.
If I keep playing I´m gonna spend som cash just for support.

Hmm...

Please please only ever spend gold if you know 100% what it's for!
A loadout just enables you to switch your characters purpose on the battlefield rather quickly but doesn't give you any new weapons! Also the XP price is so low, that every gold you spend on loadouts is wasted. Usr gold only when you're 100% you need that weapon. And it should be an expensive weapon. I would not recommend buying 40000XP weapons with gold either. Imo you can earn this in a week or two...

I don't like this game anymore. The new influx of players have brought out my strongest annoyance. DMBs who do nothing but Spam Saber Missiles. 2 games in a row, where the other team had some 3-4 DMBs, with 2 or 3 of them standing on their base launching missiles. Had 8 on me at one point, while running the flag, and I can't hear shit over the ringing. Just fighting someone in the center and go in the air? Ring Ring Ring. Just want to skii around? Ring Ring Ring.

Wouldn't be that bad if I could mute the sound some how. But it turns me into an absolute bitch after having to hear it for a minute straight.

I only played briefly, and I haven't really played Tribes the original, but I am really impressed with this game! I haven't enjoyed a competitive FPS game since unreal tournament 2003. I'm really excited to dig into this one. Managed to capture the flag in my first round :-)

Make flagruns without skiing too high? As long as you touch ground missiles can't target you.

Don't tell me how to Skii boy! I Gotta Fly!

I still got 2 flags in the game. So I do know how to handle it, though it makes being chase infinitely harder when you have a spam of them coming. It also doesn't matter if I go fast enough where they can't catch up to me. Both work. Its not like its an imbalance issue.

Its just really fucking obnoxious is all since it cuts the map down to 10 feet or below unless I'm in route. Specifically smaller maps like the twin ships. No good cover in the center and its small enough where they can sit out in front of their base and hit 3/4 of the map. On top of having that constant Ring, Ring, Ring, Ring, Ring Sound for 3 minutes straight. It makes me want to slap the shit out of them.

It's possible to migrate your previous install in case you don't want to re-download the whole thing again:

Start the download on Steam, pause it after 1%, quite Steam, copy the folders "binaries, engine, tribesgame" from

..\Hi-Rez Studios\HiRezGames\tribes

to

..\Steam\steamapps\common\tribes

uninstall the non-steam Tribes version, restart Steam, right click Tribes in the library and "verify game cache" under the properties.

Done within seconds without taxing your bandwidth cap or having download waiting time.

Another quick hint regarding Tribes Ascend: Nvidia users can force FXAA for some additional/inexpensive anti aliasing.

I've mentioned them in here before, as have others, but god fucking damn the new extended fractal grenades are fucking obnoxious. Uuuuuuurgh.

Aside from them, I love this game so much. Between DDO (only recently started playing it, but it is really rather great), D3, TF2 and Tribes I'm all good for gaming at the moment. Shit's good :)

Whats that?

A bandwidth cap, also known as a bit cap, limits the transfer of a specified amount of data over a period of time. Internet service providers commonly apply a cap when a channel intended to be shared by many users becomes overloaded, or may be overloaded, by a few users. Implementation of a bandwidth cap is sometimes termed a Fair Access Policy or Usage-based billing. // http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bandwidth_cap

If you use too many gigs in a month your ISP will charge you more money or lower your internet speed.

If you were being facetious, I hate you; I had a cap of 30gb p/month until about a year ago. Fine for one person, perhaps; terrible for a family of 4.

I've never played Tribes yet, downloaded it on Steam last night though. Should I buy the £7.49 starter pack? Or is most of it outside the XP (classes etc) stuff you can earn from just playing the game?

Unless you have unlimited bandwidth.
