Triple Triad - why hasn't SE exploited this minigame?!

Boss Doggie

all my loli wolf companions are so moe
Triple Triad is arguably one of the best FF minigames to be ever created. It is addicting, the music is amazing, and the mechanics is simple yet deep. We all have your experiences involving it (Damn it, RANDOM!)

Seriously, the Tetra System pales in comparison.

By the end of the game, I lost interest in the actual game, but I just ran around the whole world looking to play the card game... I should restart FF8 just to play this minigame... it was so awesome

it was great until you got far into the game and all these stupid new rules had spread and fucked you over big time

They will sure find Ă  way to milk those Games - maybe they could Release a more features Game on DS or PSP.

Well, the best way to prevent spreading the rules was to repeatedly deny the person initiating the rule join. By simply saying no to the first person you challenge in a card game when they ask you to combine certain rules, they'll eventually stop pestering you and simply play the game in your rules.

One of my fondest moments was watching a friend play, and trying to ask the dying seed members at the end of the game if they wanted to play cards.

They actually sold the cards back when the game was new. I bought a small pack for the novelty of it, I might still have them around somewhere.

On my third playthrough of FF VIII I managed to get the entire collection of cards. Probably one of my crowning achievements in gaming. The items I got from modding them all broke the game though. I would actually do the card game in IX if it had any tangible rewards like in VIII. And Triple Triad was pretty damn fun and easy to understand too, in comparison to the confusing mess that is Tetra Master.

Cid Highwind Xtreme Snowboarding imo.

Also, there's a TT clone for iphone but the card art is missing, according to the preview screens.

I bought FFVIII on PSN just to play this minigame again.

I just googled "Triple Triad" and apparently some folks from various websites have set up a version you can play online? Has anyone tried it? Is it possible / easy to increase your deck of cards aside from challenging other people?

If we're just talking about FF mini games now, the Hot/Cold Chocobo game in IX was probably my favorite in the series.
Hot and Cold was great. I liked the music that would play too.

Hot and Cold was pretty good too. Sometimes frustrating, but never enough to break my addiction to it.

By the way am I alone in liking the submarine minigame from FFVII?

OMG yes. So addictive. Started out mundane, and was surprising when the rewards started to get amazingly good, even taking you to new locations that couldn't be reached any other way. It was such a simple mini game too.

Agreed. Triple Triad was, like everything else in FF VIII, shit. Tetra Master, on the other hand, was actually fun.

Tetra Master was ass. Random stupid arrows.

VIII was awesome. I know because I'm an expert.

Remember the Pokemon TCG on Gameboy Colour?

They need that, for Triple Triad, on PSN.

I'd even let them DLC-goldmine it with optional "deck" releases for, say, FF1-13 characters/creatures.

Give us a nice world full of people to play cards at, Triple Triad style. With "gyms", tournaments and the lot.

There was this erm.... unofficial web-based version, Triple Triad Advance, that had all the cards from FFVIII and had cards for stuff like all the other FF's, Chrono Trigger/Cross, Secret Of Mana and other Squaresoft franchises too. If I remember right, every game earned you some money to buy some new cards (random boosters) and you could also play for cards (either your whole hand or just one card). All the TT rules where there too and tournaments and such.

It was pretty good and I can't believe S-E hasn't made a new version of it, best minigame ever. I totally sucked on the web thing though, my win/loss ratio was like 0.1 because the learning curve was so high.

edit: it seems that it's still there: http://www.ttadvance.ca/

I remember some asshole timed out on a trade match and took my Edea. What an asshole.

Fund this idea.

Same and Plus and all that kept me from getting some of the rare cards, and I'd card mod certain ones (Zell, Siren, Sacred). I had less of an understanding on how exactly the cards worked in Quad Mist in FF9, but I somehow got every card in that.

IIRC you can play Triple Triad on the PSP or something as a standalone.

triple triad with online mode for PSN. please.

i remember playing some random triple triad game from the interwebs many many many years ago. the programm even featured an online button. but it was just a teaser :(

pressing square next to NPCs was like, the best thing about FF8
Best thing was I didn't know about it until my third playthrough and always went back to that dude in the pub in Timber who always wanted to play cards even if you pressed X.

it wasn't so bad for me, but I didn;t realize until LATE in my first playthrough.

Oh boy. It's all coming back to me.

I remember resetting constantly when I was playing VIII because I hated when the rules would change randomly. Stupid Lose All trade rules.

Yeah I liked it too, when the online card game came out (around the time FFXI) I expected it to be in FFXI too. That was a huge missed opportunity. People sat around bored in FFXI looking for parties, or just having nothing to do. Triple Triad would have been perfect. I also demanded White Gate had a arcade room for people to have fun* in, because the rest of the game bored everyone to tears.
