Tron: Ares | Official Trailer

I don't have high hopes. I thought the first two thirds of Tron: Legacy was great, and I enjoy watching big showy blockbusters in a theater, but I think I may pass on this one.

The trailers I've seen appear to show cool cinematic Tron moments, but kind of feel like they're lifted from a stylish music video. I'm not getting much of a sense of story or drama or intrigue being conveyed here. That could just be because the advertisers are targeting a specific, unfussy demo of the possible viewership. Or the movie could merely be shallow.

I am also not a fan of Jared Leto.

Seeing this tomorrow in IMAX 3D.

First reviews are out:

watching my legacy BD that I apparently bought 14 years ago lol (damn), after so much streaming, you can kinda forget how crisp some of these transfers look, even at 1080p the super high bitrate results in an awesome picture, especially during the imax sequences; the music is just immediately amazing too.
hope the new movie tomorrow has the same strong vibe/look to it.

57%?

Its a bad movie??

Here in Mexico they announced it on regular television... And that's a sign of bad feelings.
Tron: Arroz :messenger_grinning_sweat:

Legacy also had bad reviews. Heck, the first one was a sleeper hit until later. Only bummer is that they seem to ignore the second one in this movie :(

I loved Legacy, I dont think anyone watched these for the story. If its visuals/ost are at the same level, thats great for me. Will watch it at home tho.

Leonardo Dicaprio Kinda GIF

Visually, looks cool. The virtual world seemingly combining with the real world is interesting. But man, I wish Sam and Quorra were back. Apparently this one will be in canon with the first two but won't acknowledge Legacy much which is disappointing. I would hope, even if it's through a quick line of dialogue, Flynn at least makes sure to find out his son is safe rather than just never mentioning him this entire film.
Wat ? There are 3 Tron movies ?

TV show as well, and a not half bad game. Problem is the lore seems to have gotten more about the interior lives of the programs and less about the "real world meets digital" aspect. With the liRPG genre blowing up it really seems like a missed opportunity to have a LOT of fun with CRPG conventions and video games in general merging with real world sensibilities.

I liked Legacy because ... well, TRON (or Flynn, in that case). But as I had children, Legacy hits much different now. I actually really like it now.

Not sure about this one. Looks like it'll follow typical Disney "modern movie" rules.

Saw it in IMAX 3D.
enjoyed it, it's not as slick/cool as legacy though, mainly because it barely takes place in the grid, and it's more of an action movie, where legacy was an adventure one.

Legacy also just simply leaned into its vibe, like that scene where they suit up sam, basically choreographed as a dance, or the scene where sam and gem walk into zuse's club, and they just walk to the rhythm of the daft punk song for no reason other than rule of cool.

But aside from that ares does very much feel like a sequel to legacy, the visuals and audio/music especially take center stage, and the logical next step with quorra escaping the grid; I just wish the few on the grid scenes we do get were longer, there's too many back and forth switching during those scenes.

Speaking of quorra, the movie does not ignore the events of legacy, all of legacy happened and it seems like the next movie, if there is one, would be more of a direct follow up to it instead of ares.

Also hasan minaj sucks, couldn't take him seriously in any scene he was.

If you do want to see it, I'd recommend a theater watch just for the music alone.

You got me back on board, just gotta get a sitter for the kids.

Just got out of IMAX 3D and... I had a great time!

Tron seems to be one of those franchises that just doesn't hit with critics, seeing as they also panned Legacy, and although Ares is no masterpiece, I was thoroughly entertained.

Positives:
- Fantastic visuals and 3D effects
- The soundtrack slaps from beginning to end
- Plenty of big, cinematic action sequences
- Said action is well filmed and choreographed
- Jared Leto gives a solid performance as Ares and carries the film
- Even Peters is clearly enjoying himself
- The concept of bringing parts of The Grid into the real world works well and makes for great visuals
- Incorporates many aspects of Tron and Tron Legacy
- I will always love Jeff Bridges

Negatives:
- The movie has some parts that drag
- The central plot revolving around the two opposing corporations lacks depth
- Greta Lee as Eve Kim was a relatively weak second lead, although not awful
- The side characters around Lee are disposable
- The sequel bait in the mid-credits scene felt cheap (relates to Legacy)

Overall, I felt quite similar about Ares as I did about Legacy; a solid film that, with slightly better writing and casting choices, could have been great.

In IMAX 3D: 7.5 / 10
In 2D: Probably a 6 / 10

Thanks for the info, I didn't know about the TV show.

I enjoyed it. Plenty of Easter eggs for fans of the previous two movies. A few obvious absences which was disappointing. Better than expected
Overall.

It's a much smaller movie than the trailers indicate. But it works.

Watching this on Sunday, haven't been in a theater since the first Spider-Verse flick.
But I love all things TRON, even Leto's creepy ass can't keep me away.

Watched it. A Tron movie without Tron :( The setup for the next (maybe) movie is ... dumb (and full of member berries). It would have been better to have a true follow up to legacy (instead of what we got) and have daft punk return for the music. Trent did a good job but not as good as DP.

Daft Punk are split

Jared Leto, the actor equivalent of Uwe Boll.
I should have known it would be slop.

I don't understand how or why this guy keeps getting casted in big movies. Does he have a gigantic fan base I'm not aware of?

It takes a generational director like Villeneuve to actually get something out of him.

I like Nine Inch Nails and the push from the soundtrack almost made me want to go see this. But Jared Leto put me off.

And now the reviews have sealed the deal. It's united the left and right wing press in a way that doesn't seem possible most of the time.

The Guardian, Independent, Times, Telegraph have all lined up to give this a 1/5.

His band seem to be more popular than you might think - they play arenas and stadiums. I presume those fans must show up for his films too. Looking at his filmography, he doesn't appear to have been in much that has generated acclaim, but if an audience shows up, that's a fairly big deal when making mainstream movies.

Saw it with my girlfriend who absolutely loved it and I didn't have the heart to tell her I thought it was all a bit rubbish. Yes it had some really solid visuals (especially when they go *there*) but otherwise it's completely forgettable.

Half the time it makes no sense and overall it's just an auditory and visual sensory overload, especially in IMAX 3D.

Only one who said yes? 🤔

Feels bad they fucked this movie up. I loved legacy but that might be cause of the music.

Why they decided to go a different route with the story boggles me. The guy who played Sam I'm sure would be down to come back? I'm sure he was pushing for a sequel one time or another.

I watched critical drinkers review on it and was confused though don't they already have the ability to bring people from cyber to the real work cause of Qoora?

Then how did she?
nobody knows about quorra, sam takes over encom but obviously he doesn't tell anybody about her so she can become some kind of labrat.

He probably doesn't even tell anyone about the grid until much later, or is forced to after the dillingers start developing their own grid/lasers, then the sister of the protagonist takes over from sam as he goes away for "personal reasons"; she and dillinger presumably start a tech race to get back to the grid and they succeed, but they are unable to take anything out of the grid and have it not de-res after a while because they are programs and not ISO's like quorra, so the tech is kinda useless until ares.
