Tropes versus Women in Video Games

oh god, WET, Golden Axe Beast Rider, X-Blades....

I'm sure she'll think those games are lovely

The main character in Wet is dressed much more conservatively than your typical example of a video game female. She wont hate it i think. The other 2 yeah. The females are wearing underwear to fight.

Games? I'm not sure of the source of the image as it's not on Feminist Frequency, but the Kickstarter page has an update I can't view that was posted on the 22nd and the image has to be recent due to Diablo III being in there. I'm going to assume these are the games she bought, probably mixed in with games she already owned.

Oh, ok let me see some issues with this. The Wii games she chose are strangely specific. I mean, there are more Wii games than that worth researching, and yet, she chose ones that are considerably questionable in my opinion. For example, Resident Evil 4. I can tell she got that just for Ashley. I would say maybe Ada, but why not Resident Evil remake or RE0? Seems a little funny to me.

Next, whats with all the 360 games? No seriously, the hell is with all the 360 games? I fear she may make the 360 sound sexist (no wait she already did in her iphone games video), or something like that. This worries me.

Last, why not get those 2 PC games digitally? Just a question.

Maybe the fact that we can list so many games that she's going to flip her shit about says more about games than it does about her.

It's just, I shouldn't be able to predict what she's going to say about the games she chose. Now, I could be wrong, but going off of her previous work, I just don't see me being wrong here. I'm hoping that she has more games we don't see. Mainly Metroid Prime triology. I can see A Metroid game in that stack, but can't tell if other M or Prime 3. If Other M, just why? If you're going to point out the issues with that game, you would need Prime or Fusion to fall back on as evidence.

Talk about jumping to conclusions =P

There is NOWHERE saying these are the games she will research or that she got with the money!

People really think the only wii games are the 10 showing ?
I would have to guess that it is a pile as big as the PS3 one ...

Real PC gamers use digital distribution anyway.
Don't want to derail the topic, but a PC gamer is definitely not identified by a DD or retail purchase.

Are there that many Wii games worth playing though? I mean in terms of female characters and her project. Zelda, Metroid, NMH, Okami, Sin & Punishment, Xenoblade eh... Rayman Origins again. I just hope there are some GC games inbetween. :P

Don't want to derail the topic, but a "real PC gamer" doesn't exist.
Happy now? You know what I wanted to say, but nagging seems to be fun.

Then why show them? Also, I said I hope she has more that we don't see, and the conclusion I jumped to is based from her previous work. I like her subject, I can't stand her writing or research abilities. So it's hard for me to have faith in this.

Well .. she obviously posted this on her blog and tweeted and .....

WAIT SHE DIDN'T

It could be just a picture with part of her old backlog to send to a crazy dude who said she is don't understand games .... we can't know for sure.

People post pics of their backlog/collection/steam library all the time on gaff =P

You are kidding, right?
Just from the top of my head games from my own collection - there are surely many more out there:

Another Code: R
Battalion Wars 2 (sexist, sexist, I tell ya)
Broken Sword: SE (if she doesn't touch PC adventures, at least she could touch this)
Bully
Calling
CSI games
Disaster: Day of Crisis
Endless Ocean 1+2
Fragile Dreams
Muramasa
Onechanbara (probably over the top sexist)
Pandora's Tower
Sam&Max Season 1+2
Secret Files 1+2 (see Broken Sword: SE)
Silent Hill: Shattered Memories
SMG1+2, NSMB for some Peach hate
House of the Dead: Overkill
Last Story
Xenoblade Chronicles

I can't tell if you're joking or not. She posted this on her Facebook page.

You can only see like the top of the Wii pile, which, if it goes all the way to the ground and isn't on a box or something, is a pretty big pile.

Next, whats with all the 360 games? No seriously, the hell is with all the 360 games? I fear she may make the 360 sound sexist (no wait she already did in her iphone games video), or something like that. This worries me.

Tons of those 360 games are multiplatform. They have to be on some platform, may as well be 360.

EDIT: Shoulda refreshed before posting this, whoops.

That's probably the worst over-simplification of the topics covered and criticized. It reads like an idiot's attempt at a reductio ad absurdum.

Well its an incredibly missed opportunity. Seing what she has cherry picked its easy to see where she will go with many of these games. With what she earned in her kickstarter it would have been nice and interesting to see a broader variety of games, and a historical look, NES/Atari till now. Not 90 percent Xbox 360 games.

Okay so these are officially her research games. I was holding back on this but how the hell do you make a case against video games, the current state of the industry, or call yourself credible on the topic without already having played at least a few of those games? Fallout 3 / New Vegas, Uncharted franchise, Killzone, Halo, Left 4 Dead, Orange Box, Dead Space, Arkham, God of War, Mass Effect, Bioshock, Portal 2, Red Dead Redemption, Fable, Assassin's Creed, Deus Ex, Elder Scrolls, Dark Souls, Gears of War, F.E.A.R., Dragon Age, Sly Cooper, BIOSHOCK, Borderlands, Alan Wake, Devil May Cry, Crysis 2, Resident Evil, Saints Row, Ratchet & Clank, Metal Gear Solid, several Mario games, pretty much every fighting game, some Kinect games, a bunch of racing and sports games.

We're not supposed to believe she hasn't played (completely, from beginning to end) any of these, right?

Not all of the games that will be analyzed or discussed in the Tropes vs Women in Video Games series are pictured here. We still have more games to get for all systems. Obviously, we also have a good number of games acquired via Steam, PSN and XBLM.

Mixed feelings about the games pictured. Glad to see so many fighting games, but I doubt they are going to go over well and assume that Soul Calibur's extensive customization will be overlooked.

Will be curious to see if sales are given any weight. X-blades is great if you want a scantily-clad female for a banner, but didn't sell particularly well. CoD, on the other hand, doesn't have as many fighting fuck toys but outsells everything else.

Oh and lastly someone should inform her that New Vegas is broken on the PS3. It is going to take 8 hard crashes before she clears the presidential section and the frame rate is uniformly awful toward the end anyway.

Difference between being forced to play as scantily clad female Ivy/Mileena and being allowed to play as male Ivy/obese Ivy/conservatively dressed Ivy.
I'd call that irrelevant, considering the official designs are still present in the game, with the ridiculous 'clothing'/'armour' and boob physics/size.

Hello ?

Pictured above are some of the video games being researched for the Feminist Frequency video series Tropes vs Women in Video Games.

**Note: Not all of the games that will be analyzed or discussed in the Tropes vs Women in Video Games series are pictured here. We still have more games to get for all systems. Obviously, we also have a good number of games acquired via Steam, PSN and XBLM.

So far we’ve purchased over 300 games for this project. As of now we can play games from the following systems: SNES, Gamecube, Wii, PS2, PS3, PS Vita, Xbox, Xbox 360, iPad, OSX. We are also looking to acquire a 3DS XL when it becomes available next month.

The only problem I see with this is that she don't consider PC a system, even if she got games for it xD

Lol i have that lamp.

Yes, those plus more. Doesn't take anything away from my point. If these are games she has purchased for the project, she hasn't played/completed them. If she hasn't played any of the biggest and most influential games of the last 7-8 years, how did she decide to do this gaming project in the first place? Also why is a 3DS XL required?

My biggest problem with that picture is she should have bought some of those for PC instead of consoles. :\ At least she didn't buy F.E.A.R. for PS3.

Remember the debate over whether or not her providing a list of games would provide people a basis on which to just attack her wholesale?

She couldn't win with this picture. Show big name titles? Why hadn't she played them already!!! Leave them out? Why is she ignoring Uncharted/Portal/Gears???? Show old games and open herself up to criticism of studying outdated treatment, leave them out and she's not providing a solid historical basis.

There's nothing inherently bad about her selection of games so far, especially given that she's looking to expand to even more systems, it's all going to depend on what she does with them.

No, if she includes old games she's doing what she said she would do, which is fine. She hasn't told us whether she's already played any of those games. It came to my attention because they were described as "purchased" and Bayonetta is in there.

If it means going and replaying the blockbusters or finishing a backlog, that's great.

well i'd really like to see what she's gonna say about women in
little big planet
little big planet 2
Katamari
child of eden
ratchet & clank
the genesis collection
the sly collection (what, carmelita?)
ssx
dead space

First of all, regardless of if she's played them before or not, she should be able to make a case for or against them afterwards, right?

Second, the fact that she's showing them doesn't mean that she hasn't had any contact with them before, just that they'll be included in her research. Maybe for going through again with that purpose in mind?

Edit: The only worry I have about the list is that there's so many games in it that playing through most of them and making careful notes of everything going on will take a lot of time. Even supposing that her budget allows her to do it full time it will be very difficult. I hope she has a good plan for the project and will definitely watch the series when it arrives.
