Tropes Vs. Videogame Black Guys

Destructoid editor Jonathan Holmes put together this chart (and others) detailing the generic archetypes that most black videogame males go through, classifying them into different categories. This is entirely satirical, but the chart did summarize what I usually think when I see black males in games. Which is sad, really.

For the term "Grape-y:"

"Whenever someone is closely associated with dark blue or purple, they could be considered "Grape-y". It could be in the clothes they wear, the color of their attacks, or even their skin color. Either way, it's all Grape-y."

Man, I know Pierce's thing in Saint's Row is that he gets no respect but to leave him off this chart entirely? That's just cold.

Lester questions whether or not he can be trusted, but Michael seems to trust him right away.

It's not like Michael said "So I got this black guy that I want to put on this job" and Lester said "Whoa Michael, I don't trust black guys. You know my rules."

Lester only initially questioned to trust him for the job because he wasn't a pro and he knew literally nothing about the guy.

So Louis is offensive because he's the only black guy? Every black guy could be put in a category in this. It's really not conclusive.

Dudley isn't an athlete. He's a gentleman who just happens to box.

Ennnhhh, a lot of these are used wayyyy too broadly.

-Franklin (GTA5) under "can we trust him?"? Or pointing out that he's a criminal in...a GTA game at all for that matter
-David Anderson (Mass Effect) under "not playable" when you can make a black Shepard just as easily as a white one?
-Drebin under "He's not all human"? That's a reach. Under that logic the only one who's human in that game is Johnny.
-50 Cent is, you know, A PERSON.

I could keep going. Not saying that black representation isn't an issue but those categories are way too broad. They basically boil down to "rude character", "silly character", "potty mouth character" etc. It's easy to make anyone fit into categories like that.

That's because Lester is a recluse hidden from everyone. He knows Michael for at least over a decade. He doesn't know Franklin.

I wasn't really agreeing with the idea that that he falls under the "Can we be trusted" label. Just pointed out that there was a small window where it was brought up. Lester basically asks Michael if he can be trusted, Michael says yeah, and that was it. So it really wasn't any part of the story.
