Trump Administration Omits LGBTQ People from 2020 Census

It's a terrible thing for public policies that gender and sexual orientation information is still being ignored on the census. And while the push for this has been recent, sit bears repeating that this has never being included in the questionnaire, so this administration is guilty of not being progressive towards lgbtq rights in this instance, not for being regressive. The political climate was probably ripe for this topic to be included and public opinion probably hadn't matured enough for the last census, so it's a bit larger transgression here than past administrations.

Maybe in 10 years...

It should also be repeated that this isn't the point. I don't really get how some of you are not getting this.

It's because they literally don't care.

Data like this can be used in numerous positive ways and should be collected due to the changing of public opinion towards LGBTQ people.

But in the end, you'll always get people who don't understand the point of the census, or just don't care.

I'm actually going to put my hands up here and say that I thought the census was every five years, not every ten, so this was another case of people yelling at Trump for stuff they ignored Obama doing.

With all the progress made in the last decade, in particular the 2013 supreme court ruling, there is no excuse for this. None. The only reason to not start including this information when presented with the opportunity to do so is straight up bigotry.

Fuck Donald Trump and his whole administration. Today and every day.

2020 is an election year

Doesn't this just give opponents another bullet in their arsenal for attack ads and debates?

Elect us and we'll treat you like a human being that exists.

I need to make sure I understand this right:

1) it doesn't leave out the people as OP subject says, it leaves out data on people's orientation?

2) it's considered important for the data to exist to support legitimization and legal protections.

3) explicit decision to not collect the data is seen (and rightly so given the whole of the administration as a whole) as a deliberate move to further margenalize the LGBTQ population.

I don't think it's the central point to get from this but it's an important tid bit.

I mean, I literally started how this information is needed to construct public policies. So I have no idea what you are talking about.

"No one, I mean no one, has done more for the LGTBQueue than ME!"

Donald Trump - 2020

Worked for women, didn't it?

Real story here is that the people pushing for this made the mistake of thinking that a government agency was agile enough to do something new. I would assume the Census Bereau is about as efficient as your local DMV.

I don't understand the issue here, will the 2020 census have a single checkbox to verify that you're straight, or are all sexualities ommited?

To be fair I doubt Trump cares or has the attention span to make these decisions. It was someone else in his Legion of Doom, he's gonna deny involvement and the conversation will be dropped.

[The following is a fake response from Sean Spicer from later.]

Reporter: No LGBTQ representation on the 2020 census, why and is this a sign for the LGBTQ+ community?

Sean Spicer: No. And I mean quite frankly this seems like an oversight rather than an omission. Look, Donald Trump has always been a great ally to the LGBT community. He had huge support from the community while running for President and going forward you will see that reflected in his actions.

Reporter: But... there is no option fo..

Sean Spicer: Listen, Donald is... you know, I find it interesting everytime, everytime something is slightly out of place you guys are so quick to attached it directly to the president despite the fact he is the most supportive person to the gay community. Always so negative and qui..

Reporter: Literally there is no option in the census, what does thus signal?

Sean Spicer: Enough. No (dismissive chuckle) this does not signal anything going forward. Next.

"No one, I mean no one, has done more for the LGTBQueue than ME! Believe me............BELIEVE ME! I care more about the LGBT than Obama ever did. That's how I won the first time in a massive landslide victory...HUGE"

Added a bit more lol.

So many fucking geniuses online going "but he held a flag! Don't worry!".

There is ironically some truth to that. Everytime he said/did something "positive"/"moderate" the press was incredibly eager to fall for it. And they will again.

Is there a red-leaning geographical region with enough of an LGBTQ population for this to matter?

If you'd read the article and several of the responses on the first page, you'd understand.

It's 100% irrelevant to the point.

Read. The. Article.

Read. The. Article.

I have read the article, it's more that I don't understand why this is being viewed as a negative, I totally understand that websites write clickbait articles to cause some sense of controversy because it is good for their revenue.

This isn't an issue, as far as I can tell this news is a great positive, in a rare sense of clarity the government have decided, that actually, it's none of their business.

Put it this way, I'm a cool guy, if I wrote this article for a website the headline would be

"Government gives equal options in upcoming census, are not separating citizens based on sexual orientation"

I really don't think you understand what you read AND what the census is used for

Dont worry guys, he waved a flag.

Thread is as hilarious as the Washington Post OpEd around the same time about Muslims for Trump.

"In my opinion, it's the media who are the real bigots!"

Dolts.

What is it exactly that you think a census is?

That they would have a record of a large portion of LGBTQs that could potentially be used to target them? Yeah, I think I have a pretty good idea.

Do you have any evidence the census has ever been used this way? If the government wants to target and harass people from marginalized groups, they've got the entire goddamn intelligence/surveillance apparatus (FBI's dossiers on 'agitators' ) they definitely don't need to use the census to do it.

And the GOP will probably still win, because the Democrats can't pull their heads from their own asses long enough to realize how badly they fucked up and how to fix it.

But maybe they will prove me wrong. Maybe.

This is what happens when you elect an internet troll as president

He's far worse than just an internet troll, he's a fascist white supremacist that idolizes Hitler. He wants to purge minorities and LGTBQ people from this country. It's a true testament to the amount of ignorant hatred festering in this country that he was even in the running, let along actually becoming the goddamn President. Fuck every single person that made this happen.

This seems like much ado about nothing, I guarantee the form will look similar to 2010's census form - which asks a persons name, how they are related to the other persons in the house (husband or wife, unmarried partner, roommate, etc.) and then asks sex. In other words, you can easily tell when someone is gay even though it didn't specifically ask.

2010 form is here

You have a bright future in journalism, my dude.

Great headline for an article about the fucking census.

Yeah, but we have nothing to worry about *flag pic*

I hope that orange piece of shit chokes on a Trump steak the next time he visits Mar-a-Lago.

A heart attack can't be far off, what with all the investigations, his obesity, shitty diet. The stress is gonna kill him

No... The fact that two same-sex individuals are married or in a civil union isn't necessarily an indicator of their sexual orientation.
