Trump is still tweeting from his personal, unsecure Android

Yeah; I was just thrown off by the framing of the article being about Twitter.

I thought there was even a law that barred him from carrying an unsecure device?

The article is focused on Twitter because it proves what device he is using.

China, if you're listening, please hack the president*

*hey i may have said it but that doesn't mean i support it hurrdurr

How do we know it's his old unsecured phone?

I'm not being obtuse but the confirmation was merely based on 'Android' appearing in a Tweet.

What's the worst that can happen?

Someone hacks into it and posts actual Facts on Twitter?

Someone hacks into it and gets an audio\video feed, plus all emails sent and received, and can display false information on it.
Good enough yet?

Define "unsecured." Out of the box modern Android phones are pretty secure. It's not like the US government has some special sauce that improves it, they'd just mandate certain pieces of software.

As long as he doesn't keep sensitive info on the phone I don't see the issue

There's also the possibility of a backdoor hack keeping the mics turned on without him knowing.

Also, does anyone believe he's not texting Bannon et al about stuff that should be subject to FOIA or at least record keeping?

It's in the OP.

Nothing in the OP proves anything except that it is an Android phone though...
The journalist wrote that, but didn't cite any source. It was based solely on the fact it said "Twitter for Android".

It may very well be a new, secure, Android device.

It probably is the old one though

hell, it might be tapped. we could have a legit enemy listening in to all trump's calls.

The OP links to an article confirming its his old phone

I mean, I guess I see that (I read the article).

I kind of looked at that being the writer adding it in based on previous speculation/relating to the Tweet sent in reaction to O'Reilly, rather than some burning confirmation.

Probably just a comprehension mess up on my part (was reading during my commute!)

I can't imagine Trump just owning up to that when he knows the press would go ape shit.

Then, Maggie Habberman at the New York Times confirmed the suspicion:

https://www.nytimes.com/2017/01/25/u...ouse.html?_r=0

Mr. Trump’s wife, Melania, went back to New York on Sunday night with their 10-year-old son, Barron, and so Mr. Trump has the television — and his old, unsecured Android phone, to the protests of some of his aides — to keep him company. That was the case after 9 p.m. on Tuesday, when Mr. Trump appeared to be reacting to Bill O’Reilly’s show on Fox News, which was airing a feature on crime in Chicago.

It's his old phone.

So far it seems like the phone isn't really "modern" and that's the problem.

[EDIT]
Should've refreshed, damn.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't the US Government use Windows phones because they have better security controls than iOS and Android?

Someone breaks into his Twitter account, posts something negative about a company like Apple. Stocks drop immediately.

We've already seen this effect with some of his posts. Can't imagine what could be done maliciously by a hacker.

...yes, they do?

Obama famously had to fight tooth and nail to keep any Blackberry at all before they figured out a way to get him a sufficiently secured phone.

It's not like his security team just said "No no no no no no no no no no no no no okay fine." and let him keep what he was using.

Probably so that the NSA can use the Microsoft-provided backdoor to spy in the President.

Doubt that Apple would give the government that kind of access.

And Samsung is a foreign company. Can't trust them with that.

Android zero day exploits sell for around $200K, which isn't particularly high (the same vendor I checked pays up to $1.5m for iOS exploits), suggesting they're not too hard to come by. How many do you think a well-funded government agency actively engaging in cyberattacks can afford?

And that's assuming he's using the latest version of Android and whatever manufacturer-added skin it's got on top isn't full of its own security holes.

Because Russia is the only country with hackers. You hit the nail on the head here!

Then he simply get's a new secured phone which is so shockingly easy to do it'll probably be done in no time.

The only people Trump cares about being offended or upset are his voters and they could give a piss about this or anything else shady/dumb he does.

Had someone at work yesterday say bullshit about Hillary's emails. Ooooh boy this gonna be good

Are we tracking his emails as well? It has to be recorded/logged right?
Him and his staff are using a private Email server to hide their communications.
It's okay when Republicans do it.

EDIT - to people replying to this, I was being facetious.

More like someone listens in to any conversations he's having within listening range of his phone. Not phone conversations, just conversations near his phone. It doesn't even have to be turned on.

How.

Maggie Habberman just made that up.

I imagine the interview going

"What do you do at night?"
"Sitting alone with the TV, my phone"

Then her seeing the tweet lead to deducing it's the old phone - and, again, it LIKELY is - but its not a fact.
Especially after stating the interview was done by phone, meaning she couldn't have a glance at the phone.

Because the Russians are really going to hack their puppet and hurt his influence.

I believe one of the biggest concerns is that he will use his unsecured Android phone for his work.

He's consistently shown that he's a stubborn and petty person, so it's not unfathomable to think that he'd use his day to day phone to answer e-mails and conduct government business. That's when hacking becomes a real issue. This is part of the reason Hillary was investigated over the course of her campaign.

Hopefully, it'll be hacked for everyone to see beyond his Twitter posts. He may also be saying shit so crazy that's not on there.

Except that she then says:

You're reaching.
