truths about pgr3?

i am considering buying this game for when i get xbox360 but i have some doubts... here are some things i read, are these true?

-single player campaign lacking, start with best car...+ after getting a few tropies it's the same thing over and over

-it's boring...not many hills....just cookie-cutter racing

-online is no good, ever race is the same... you get a little bump and spin out of control. Person who gets of out the melee first wins

-graphics on sdtv (i've no hdtv) are mediocre...not big up from part 2

how accurate?

Mostly true

It lacks a city like Edimburg, but some tracks have some nice ramps.

True, if you play with strangers. Play with friends and there is no problem. Some team races are also very cool, with friends or not.

Wrong.

The visuals are a strange beast...

They look awesome in motion, yes, but you really can't appreciate just how detailed they really are while playing. If you stop and look around in photo mode, you'll be truly blown away by the detail...but those details don't stand out while racing. For example, the lines painted on the road are incredibly high resolution...but as a result of both the motion blur and the lack of AF, they often look like N64 level textures. The road on The Bridge looks like shit while driving, for example...

I've yet to see it in SD, but I can't imagine it looking like PGR2. PGR2 does look like shit in motion while PGR3 is quite the opposite. It's an amazing title.

I have a SDTV and the game looks amazing. Definitly leaps and bounds above PGR2.

Also when racing on-line, if you are hosting you can turn collisions off.

Also when racing online you get points for where you place that you can see in the lobby, so a person that places 2nd in 2 races actually gets more points than a person who finishes 1st and 3rd. So there is still motivation to race even if it becomes apparent you won't come in first.

Its worth noting that you don't start with the best car. The single player's progression isn't much different than a game like Gran Turismo. You start with some initial credits, buy a car, earn more credits to unlock other cars and buy new ones.

The single player has me hooked much more than PGR2, and PGR2 had me hooked

BS, race the ring or Tokyo - and this comments will die very quickly

It's a racing game, obviously you heard this from somebody who's not very good at it

I have an SDTV and the graphics are stunning, don't listen to this shit that you need an HDTV to see the difference to last gen

i'll go into a bit of detail this time instead of saying falt out i disagree ;)

-single player campaign lacking, start with best car...+ after getting a few tropies it's the same thing over and over

the single player career is basically the same as pgr2's but with a drastically different look. there are a series of evenst to enter where you earn a trophy based on your finishes. it really isnt much different from pgr2's car class events, as you'll usually get a good mix of race types. some events however will focus on style, so you'll do cone challenges, kudos vs time, etc. others, just pure racing.

and i for one liked that you could use any car throughout the game. you cant start with the best car, but you can afford a car in any class (a through e) to race with. the challenege of each event scales depending on your car class, so your free to race with pretty much anything and stand a chance. i hated in the previous gotham games (and most racing titles) that your forced to race with cars you otherwise wouldnt. this game doesnt do that. i cant see how thats a negative.

-it's boring...not many hills....just cookie-cutter racing

there arent many hills, but its far from boring. the few hills in tokyo will certainly ruin a perfect race if you dont approach them with caution.

the tracks in pgr3 certainly seem better for racing then any of the previous games (with a few exceptions, DC in pgr2 was awesome). Vegas is easily my new favorite city in the gotham series.

-online is no good, ever race is the same... you get a little bump and spin out of control. Person who gets of out the melee first wins

definitely not true. sounds like someone who sucks told you this :). online career at this point is a bit of hit and miss though. lots of a-holes race to win, with no concern over clean driving and good sportsmanship. i imagine once the noobs drop the game though (probably when the next wave of titles hits) that even online career will be awesome.

racing with friends though cant be beat. great voice for all 8 players, no lag, etc. fun times.

-graphics on sdtv (i've no hdtv) are mediocre...not big up from part 2

again, no comment.

just to mention, the create a route sucks though. dissapointed total. the placement of yellow arrow barracades is spotty at best, and unless your racing at night, they are very hard to see.

my own personal feeling is :

graphics are great, but the game is missing something.
I was all hyped for the game but after a few trophies, i just felt like it was all a bit to familiar and the motivation to play on fell off real quick. :(

It is lacking and you do get the best car really quickly, but I didn't find it that repetitive or boring. I thought it was really fun...until you beat it 6-7 hours later. I just have an issue with very few tracks and cities.

-it's boring...not many hills....just cookie-cutter racing

The tracks are great and lots of fun...but I think most of the PGR2 tracks were better locations. PGR3 tracks are more suited for speed racing and slight turns, whereas PGR2 was about going down hills and swinging around a huge S turn at the bottom.

-online is no good, ever race is the same... you get a little bump and spin out of control. Person who gets of out the melee first wins

Race with those you know and it should be ok.

-graphics on sdtv (i've no hdtv) are mediocre...not big up from part 2

Never played it on an SDTV, but the lighting and higher polygon model cars should be the same on an SDTV so it would look a lot better than PGR2.

If I eventually get a 360, I'll probably get PGR3. I played it over at a friend's house, and I was quite impressed with it.

I must say though, it's a relatively easy game. After playing it for 30 minutes, I was getting Platinum medals and trophies left and right. It was fun, but I wish it was more challenging offline. Online there's good competition, but there's no guarantee everyone will play fair.

For the concerns in the OP, I would say that I 'm 50/50 on them. It's still a really fun game, though. Get it even if you're on the fence about it, I say.

- more or less true, but the challenge is good throughout the game. actually i haven't finished the campaing but i still have fun with free run and online

- not many hills, that's true. That doesn't make it necessary boring, but it's true that tracks lack a little 'personality'. I'm talking about the track layout, not scenery

- true depending on who you race with. Quick online races will probably end up like that, that's why you should have a bunch of friends to play with.

- What darkx10 said. Awesome in motion, even on a SDTV, and a *huge* step up from Pgr2 (don't mind Ign, really, they don't know what they're talking about) though it's true that you'll only appreciate what it does by looking around in photo mode or driving real slow.

I think that PGR3's single player mode is very good- not great. I only say that in light of having played, and loved PGR2. PGR2's SP mode was a lot deeper. I also thought that PGR2's depth facilitated one's ability to really learn the cars, tracks, and how to set up turn-in and brake points.

Boring... no.

As for how this games looks in SDTV, well, I guess it depends upon the SDTV. I think it looks awesome on my 60" Hitachi RPTV. :)

For people who are saying this game is boring, I hope you're playing it on at least gold difficulty.

I checked my friends list and there's practically no one who played the entire game on gold or platinum. GAF is WEAKSAUCE

just a couple of golds to go, then I'm going for platinum :D

That's what I really like about the single player game, it makes me want to come back and go for gold and platinum. Only after that will I really go on and play it on live (apart from a couple of live races in between to relax).

-online is no good, ever race is the same... you get a little bump and spin out of control. Person who gets of out the melee first wins

True in random games to an extent... If you are playing some of the tight tracks with the max amount of players I can see this happening a lot. If you play with only 4 cars in London for example, you would rarely see this. If you want to play with tons of people, pick a wider track like Las Vegas. Also, this is mostly a problem with newbies that pick cars they can't control, so if you only play with your friends you'll never have this problem.

No way! PGR3 Looks awesome on my tv.

So now that all the man's questions has been answered, who is up for some racing tonight? As much as I enjoy losing to op_ivy all night, it would be alot more fun if we could get a full 8 person race going with more gaffers. For the guys that posted in this thread that don't have me on your friends list, send me an invite. My gt is Crag Dweller.

Read all the reviews and thought it would be great, but I got bored after a couple of hours. Winning is easy, and they give way too much credits. You'll have the best cars in no time. The lack of upgrading and changing car performance also hurts.

i'll be on in a bit :D

for the record, i quickly played through the game with all golds. i've since gottn a hand full of plats, and will go back and get them all eventually (ie, after i play through kameo)

I put in PGR2 today and I have to say PGR2 >>>>>>> PGR3. PGR2 seems much more challenging too and it's better having a different class car for each section instead of letting you pick an overpowered car through the entire game

PGR3 is still one of my favorite X360 games though, but I find PGR2 superior

i agree pgr2 is much more difficult.

i for one hated having to race a mulitude of challenges in shitty classes though. fuck american muscle. fuck classics. fuck soccer moms.

and fyi, i think pgr3 is easier if you play through with the slower cars then the faster ones.

wario, whats your gamertag again? i had to switch mine, so add LoopOfHenle or i'll add you

My tag is "WarioSixFour" but I don't really own a X360. Been using my bro's to play and so I'll hardly be on it

I'm still waiting to jump on the next gen bandwagon

I like some of the littler details that are present in PGR3... like how the crowd will jump back from the fence when you hit it or how they cheer and snap photos when you do some 360's in front of them.

rod said:
personally i think pgr3 destroys pgr2 in every aspect

i agree. one thing i love about bizarre is how they have continously fine tuned this series. i actually disliked MSR, thought PGR1 was decent/good, PGR2 great, and PGR3 absolutely fantastic. everything about 3 is superb IMO. i love the car selection and how free you are to drive with what you want. i love the size and quality of the cities present. even though there are far less of them then pgr2, they definitely are more complete then anything in pgr2. i cant be the only one that only really liked 2 or 3 cities in pgr2...

there are a few minor imperfections or things missing that should be present, but as a launch title, i couldnt be happier.

I tried the demo, looks incredible in the in-car view, other than that...

Totally not my style of game. Bring on Burnout next-gen (not the sloppy POS port, shame on you Criterion :/)

Seriously, We need more people to race with us. I'll make a thread later on today and see if we can get group together to race sometime next week.

Next-gen is worth waiting for.

:lol

-I have finished the game on gold. And that alone makes it better than PGR2, because i never had the motivation to continue in PGR2(silver was good enough).

-And as for online races.. getting out of the first turn does not mean first place, especialy with friends. If you are a competent racer you will catch up and pass others (doesnt matter how much head start or turn crashes you had early in the race.) I have finished first in many races where i was 8th after the first turn crash.

I will add that I saw PGR3 when I was in Florida, and I thought it looked very nice, on component connection (no HDTV)...I never played PGR2 so I can't compare

It's decent as a graphical showcase, however the fact that it tries to meld both Arcade and Sim racing makes it feel drifty and odd. Bizarre needs to pick a sub-genre and stick with it.

why? its a great series, if you dont like it you dont have to play it. i for one like the psuedo arcade/sim style of it

Great. As I said, to me on the either sim / arcade catagory, it is half assed. And I know I am not alone with others that keep giving it chances. Simple opinion.

Put the effort into Sim, they would have a Forza contender. Into arcade, Burnout/Outrun.

Forget all that, if you are a long time Gran Turismo player then the 30fps really hurts the game. 60fps for the win, get Ridge Racer 6 instead.

I don't think the 30 fps hurt this game at all (unlike PGR2).

Put me down for racing as well, gamertag hadareud (I will only be able to race if I can drag my girlfriend away from Bejeweled at some point though)

I never tried it on a SDTV so I can't comment but you are right on the other points. There are no hills that I can remember and the online has taken a dive. I actually traded in the game yesterday and Blockbuster gave me $28.50 for it. I bought it at launch but I found it to be disappointing.

60fps? No.
Lots of jaggies? Yes
Nasty blur that affects some game types? Yes
Minis? No
Online career sucks.

What the fuck? 30fps or not the game moves bloody fast. What frigging game did you see?

QFT.

the "OMFG I can't believe they look this good" graphics are impossible to really pay attention to while racing. the graphics that you DO pay attention to while racing are usually "meh" to good, but nowhere near the backgrounds. The only OMFG thing about the graphics you do pay attention to while racing is that the lighting is phenomenal.

if the tracks (literally the tracks themselves) had better textures and the cars were anti-aliased better, the game would probably have unquestionably the best graphics to date on any video game ever.

The textures on the tracks are great. You're just moving so fast that it looks blurry.

I do have to agree that the online mode is sometimes crippled by dirty and/or careless drivers - as it is easy to cause someone else to spin out while surviving yourself and there is absolutely no penalty for doing so. So, the person who can corner the best does not necessarily win the race. However, when you do get in a room with good, clean racers - its so much fun you won't want to quit. Unfortunately, if you're relying on luck, your going to spend a lot of time facing backward. I actually popped this back in after being away from it for a few weeks (thanks to DoA4) and it almost seems like the quality of people online has gone down in that timeframe... that or I just got poorly matched ever race. So, instead of some nights where I'd play for hours on end, I quit after half an hour.

Nonetheless - this is just me venting. PGR3 is great - even if you just wanna go through single player campaign. I actually find the blend of sim/arcade racing to feel perfectly smooth and balanced.
