I'm in Jakarta. I didn't feel anything, and neither did my girlfriend who is on the other side of the city. I didn't even know there had been an earthquake until I saw this thread. I have no idea where the BBC is getting their info from.

I just posted from what I saw. Is true that is hard to belive even by me to see a 5 minutes shaking.

They explained a bit on CNN, that's it's a strike-slip. It's better in terms of not creating as big tsunami. A guy on another site (text was sent to me, sender didn't include link) wrote this summary:

Same things was said by an expert on CNN.

Yeah if it's strike-slip and not a subduction earthquake that's a positive to take.

Yep. Had to read more about it. There's an animation here:
http://earthquake.usgs.gov/learn/an...e=strikeslip&flash_width=240&flash_height=310

Basically:
af1-2.jpg

With a "normal" all the energy is pointed upwards almost straight towards the surface, resulting in a powerful tsunami. A strike-slip doesn't produce as much energy towards the surface.

I think this is going to be ok. I know shit about any of this, but sounds like this will be pretty minor thankfully. Just watching Al Jazeera live that's what they are saying at least. Hope so.

Heard on the news that even if the quake itself might not cause waves, it can provoke submarines landslide that might cause small tsunamis. Hope it's not going to happen...

Al Jazeera just said that there was another 8.8 earthquake just minutes ago. Once again, I didn't feel anything in Jakarta.

Tsunami warning has been issued for this secone quake. Hopefully everything will be fine.

CNN says 8.2 aftershock, only at 15km depth though which I guess is bad.

I just got here yesterday morning. I'm in the south of the island and everyone seems cool about it. As in: I don't see anyone in a hurry to get the fuck out of dodge or anything.

Time will tell I guess.

Just heard about a new 8.8 quake and another tsunami warning. Damn. Hope it's a strike-slip with a non-devestating tsunami.

My Wife's brother is in Phuket as we speak. She just got off the phone after speaking with him. Apparently the hotel he is staying has forced every1 to go to the terrace of the hotel.

How is that gonna help?

A tsunami probably wont bring down a whole Hotel (assuming that it's made out of concrete).

It's definitely better than to get hit somewhere in the streets.

Edit: Wait, is a terrace always on groundlevel? Because if it is it would be indeed a weird decision.

Saw people on beach waiting for tsunami, fucking wow. Rather be on terrace , I guess ...

Here's the warning issued with times the possible tsunami will hit.

Wtf?? Bombay is on the Western coast of India. Indonesia is to the East of India. There is no chance of Bombay being by an Tsunami.

Reports coming in via Twitter that water is receding by up to 10 metres on Simeulue Island... not good news from what I understand.

BBC said:
A later alert said that sea level readings indicated a tsunami was generated and that it "may already have been destructive along some coasts".

fuck fuck fuck. if true, good luck to everyone in its path.

it's 4th of July in my asshole
Got a cousin living in Phuket and another in Thailand on holiday at the moment.

They are saying the sea has gone really far out so there might be a tsunami.

I hope people are more informed this time. 2004 tourists were even standing on the beach, thinking about how cool it was that the sea had pulled back so much.

That image was posted two hours ago, surely something must've happened by now? Nothing on CNN.

edit
They just commented that, could take AT LEAST two hours before it strikes. Not sure if they mean by now or when the sea goes back.

Yeah I'm so sorry, that picture was indeed at least two hours old. :(

On Al Jazeera they said a warning was issued for about another hour, if nothing happens then they will take the warning away

According to American sources, Rangong, Phang Nga, Phuket, Krabi, Trang and Satun are all reporting calm waters. Thailand TV channel TAN is reporting Thailand soon will retract the Tsunami warning.

A lot of Swedish tourists in Koh Lanta. They're reporting thunder flashes, heavy rain and general chaos when the larm came.

Burma authorities are warning of a 6 meter tall wave according to TAN.

Yeah I'm so sorry, that picture was indeed at least two hours old. :(

I didn't mean it like "old newz", just that maybe something would happen! But maybe it still can.

Some interview with Pacific Tsunami warning center on CNN, they're claiming the highest wave so far is less than a meter high.

It's been 3 hours already, if a tsunami was to happen, it would already have no?

Still risks with aftershocks I guess.

That's not looking good :(

I'm going there in June I was about to buy the tickets this morning!

I really hope that nothing happens to anyone..

I don't mean to alarm you but you have dogs on your face
How long is it usually between a receding tide and the tsunami hitting land?
