I'm working through mario 64 right now on the VC and it has the best tutorial ever (even though it doesn't have a tutorial at all)...
The actual game itself is sort of a tutorial in disguise.. You learn little tricks in an easy context, like learning the basic control outside the castle when you first start the game just by running around and trying things. You don't realize it while you play it, but the whole early part of the game is slowly, carefuly training you for the later part.
Each level introduces a few new ideas and puts them in an easy context... Then later on, you have to use those things again in a harder context. Not the newest idea in the world but executed to perfection, and it was important with this game because the game itself is sort of teaching everybody how to use analog sticks in a 3d world.. So the game itself functions as a tutorial for modern gaming.
