Twists that blew your mind

TWEWY was like "Twists: The Game."

Neku murders Shiki in cold blood on Day 1 - wait, psyche! No, he didn't!
Everybody playing the game is actually trapped in a pseudo-afterlife!
You have 7 days to win the game, and you get another chance at life!
Your entry fee is "the thing most important to you."
Neku and Shiki meet Beat and Rhyme, another pair playing the Reaper's Game, but Rhyme is murdered mid-way through the week, dooming Beat since the game can't be survived without a partner.
Neku and Shiki overcome the odds and win the Reaper's Game...but a cruel interpretation of the rules means that only Shiki will be resurrected!
Neku is forced to play the game for a second week, but Shiki became the "most important thing to him" over the course of the first Game, so she's been "claimed" hostage by the gamemasters.
What? Beat joined the Reapers as a loophole to escape fading from existence?
Hey, who's this aloof jackass Neku's forced to pair up with this week?
His name is Joshua and he's the one that murdered Neku! Oh... wait...no he wasn't...but, yes, he was? But, no, he wasn't!
Joshua sacrifices himself for Neku at the end of the second week and the rules get screwed again, forcing Neku into playing the game for a THIRD week.
The Gamemasters interpret "having a partner" as the most important thing to Neku, so all Players besides Neku are removed from the game, making it unwinnable. All Neku can do is wait to be hunted down and killed.
Wait! Beat defects from the Reapers and partners with Neku!
Beat and Neku do everything they can to undermine the Game and show up at the doorstep of the Gamemaster!
Wait...Joshua is alive!? And he's the REAL Gamemaster!? And he's REALLY IS the one who murdered Neku, in a gambit to pull him into the game and use him as a chess piece against the "Proxy" Gamemaster!?
Joshua gives Neku a gun and challenges him to one final "Game." He must shoot Joshua to save himself and the city!
Neku is too hesitant to shoot Joshua and too confused by what's going on... So he's shot dead on the spot.
But wait! He wakes up back where it all started, apparently having "won" somehow and been returned to life (or maybe he's forced to play one more week of the Game off-screen and we're just to assume it was a normal, uneventful version of the Game that he easily wins - it's a bit vague.)

"WHAT THE HELL!?" indeed.
I played the entire game in basically one long session. I was hooked from the very first twist and couldn't put it down until I was capable of closing my jaw again.

you forgot the best one

the fashionable girl with the pick attire isn't actually Shiki, it's her best friend. Shiki is that girl's plain-clothed friend.

you do indeed.

the first game is 20 bucks for DS on Amazon. Give it a whirl. You will not regret it.

Also, congrats me. I think I just spoiled Ghost Trick for myself. It was even tagged.

If I remember correctly, Ghost Trick has a lot more going on than just the twist you most likely spoiled for yourself. It's definitely worth a playthrough.

Someone spoiler me the ending of Steins:Gate pls. I got one ending and loved it, but I cant get myself to start all over for four or five more times.

if you saved anywhere you don't need to start over. There's practically a single branching point for all endings but one. You'll start over once at worst.

thanks for the assurance. I was planning to get around to it either way. ^_^

This literally blew my 7-year old mind.

But didn't the manual and the story at the start screen tell you Mario found the door to Subcon (the door you drop from at the beginning of the game) in his dream?

I think Square Enix have denied that in one of their Ultimania books.

They didn't "deny it." They said something about the lore, that some people take as evidence that this theory is incorrect.

Besides, fans are usually much quicker to dismiss Square Enix's statements when they don't like them (for example, the fact that FFX and FFVII take place in the same world).

You don't need to start over. Didn't you save your game from time to time?
Also the skip function is extremely fast.

999 for me as well. It's a damn shame the game's genre will turn off 90% of people who hear about it - and being told of the teeedious repetition necessary to get to the true ending will nix another 5% - because... man.
There are a ton of twists, but the revelation that came along with the "okay, now turn your DS upside-down" moment defined that whole platform for me
. The final couple hours of that game are wildly satisfying. It piles up an incredible amount of batshit insanity, twists on twists, and manages to pay it all off and wrap it up in a perfect little bow (to the point where I almost wish it was left as a single entry without sequels).

Undertale's a more recent one. Not mindblowing in the exact same sense, but it reeeally went places that I was not expecting. Spoilers for both Undertale and 999:
Okay, well, actually mindblowing in the same kind of sense, yeah. The path to the true ending involving getting other endings along the way as one overarching "single playthrough," the idea of the player themselves having knowledge across multiple endings/save states being addressed (even moreso in Undertale than 999; the name you give the game when you start is not the name of the person you're playing as, etc).

Not really a story twist, but in Batman: Arkham Asylum
when the game "crashes." I got up out of my chair to make sure my xbox was okay

That's what makes 999 so brilliant. The game somehow managed to tie the story not only into the gameplay but also the hardware. That is beautiful.

The Witcher 1
The main villain (Grand Master of the Flaming rose) is the adult version of Alvin your adopted son, after he accidentally travels to the past during a battle with non-humans, the lessons you teach are later spewed back to as the reasons for him doing his horrific shit

Man, I completely forgot about that. That was pretty great.

MGS1:
Snake was the carrier for the FOXDIE virus, Solid and Liquid are clones of Big Boss, everyone on the support crew except Nastasha and Mei Ling are hiding something big.

MGS2:
You don't play as Solid Snake. The world is run by the Patriots. The Patriots are some kind of AI. Everything has been orchestrated by them to give GW a live exercise to study. Jack was raised and sent to war as a boy by Solidus.

MGS3:
The Boss didn't defect to the Soviet Union, she was undercover and the shifting politics caused her to become a martyr to maintain world peace, going down in history as a war criminal.

MGS4:
Zero created the Patriot's AI's to carry on the Boss's will. Big Boss returns to end the cycle. Ocelot sacrificed his body and mind to make this happen.

MGSV:
You don't play as Big Boss, but his 'phantom' - a man conditioned and facially-reconstructed to be BB on the world stage. Parasites that spread through speech are weaponised. Quiet sacrifices herself to save BB's phantom by speaking English. Otacon's dad is a massive piece of shit.

Going to post one I don't think I've seen mentioned on here...

The last 2-4 hours of Legend of Heroes Trails of Cold Steel... Seriously don't read this if you are playing through or going to play through the game EVER!!

Okay so even if you saw parts of this coming there is no fucking way to predict every fucking thing that happens at the very end of this game. Just going to go through a list of things that happen...

As you prep for the school festival the schoolhouse you have been exploring all year lights up like a Christmas tree and Class 7 has to dive in and figure out wtf is going on...

So you do so, and at the very end you find a giant fucking mecha!

Then the school festival arrives which you partake in which is pretty enjoyable and humorous all around...

Then it ends and after dancing with your special someone the fort you visited in Chapter 4 has been COMPLETELY DESTROYED by an unknown weapon from an unknown location. It's important to note that while this is being explained to you the music is so fucking on point its dreadful and legit makes you wonder wtf happened and how/why/ect

Fast forward to a week later and the Iron Blood Chancellor is going to make a speech and the game lets you explore the school and town in the mean time...

So you do and the tension is insane, everyone knows that war is coming kids you had seen goof off or do stupid shit all year are scared to silence as you all await the Chancellors speech.

So its time for the speech and like everyone thought hes about to declare war on Crossbell, but Millina drops a massive bomb. Crow is not there and shes figured out that HE is Comrade C the leader of the rebels you have been fighting against the whole game and hes there and is going to kill the Iron Blood Chancellor!

So then fucking Misty/Vita who you've met up until now uses some magic that lets you see the events that are transpiring in the capital, freaking Emma out because she fucking knows her. Crow kills the Iron Blood Chancellor and then escapes in ANOTHER MECHA!

But were still not done...

Then arrives the fucking Noble Faction who has been laying plans the entire game (and long before) for a hostel takeover, from their flagship they drop other mechs into the capital and take it over with ease.

Then Misty/Vita reveals herself to be apart of Oroborous the main villains of the series!

Then after taking over the capital the mechs are on the way to Trista and the school! The teachers mount a defense and your Class makes the decision to try and back them up the best you can. A shit ton of great fanservice moments here but in the end freaking Shanon shows up and reveals herself to be an enforcer of Oroborous (who is on leave) and helps out the teachers.

However then Class 7 is forced to defend the other entry way into Trista by themselves. You are able to beat one of the mechs (which I think is awesome and really shows how strong the group has become) but when one of the commanders shows up you can't do anything. Thats when the mech from the schoolhouse Valimar speaks to Rean the main character and flys out of the schoolhouse and now Rean is piloting a fucking mecha too!

Rean defeats the command unit but then freaking Crow shows up in his mecha, its a dramatic moment as Rean still thinks of Crow as one of his friends and wants him to stop all this. Crow refuses unless Rean can beat him, so they fight and despite Rean first winning the fight Crow activates some super mode and beats Rean down.

Valimar wants to retreat and the rest of Class 7 makes an incredible choice, they stand between you and Crow to allow you to escape (since Valimar is the only weapon that can stand against this army of mechs and they can't lose it now) and Valimar against Reans wishes uses this opportunity to escape leaving your friends to face Crow with absolutely no chance of winning...

Then the fucking credits roll.

That is how you do a freaking cliffhanger ending, it brought the entire plot of the whole game that has been slowly building to a fever pitch and everything goes batshit insane in this 2-4 hour period. You can predict certain things happening like the mech being in the school house or even Crow being Comrade C but the noble faction actually pulling off the take over with giant mechs no less? Then Sharon's identify and Misty/Vitas identify? No fucking way you can call all of that let alone even a few things together, its not just 1 plot twice its half a dozen in a crazy short amount of time and perfectly sets up the next game. When I beat this late last year and I to hold myself back for DAYS to not just buy the Japanese version and play through an import or watch one online it was absolutely amazing and this ending alone pushed Cold Steel to my favorite game of last year.

Cold Steel 2 can't get here soon enough. Just... Damn.

OP are you serious about that OoT example? You thought the game was just gonna end with
Zelda and Impa on the run from Ganondorf? Latter of which never being a boss fight let alone defeated?
There is however a twist in that game which is truly amazing. Or at least was for 3 years before SSBM came out. Unfortunate for me and many others who played that game first.

These are the twist that stuck with me:
Spec Ops The Line: game played me like a fiddle till the end

Bioshock Infinite: mind fucked for days, thank gaf for that spoiler thread
BioShock-Infinite-Baptism.jpg

Heavy Rain: pretty much shocked my 15 year old mind, never really experienced a story like this

Monkey Island 2: I guess its more of a cliffhanger ending than a twist if we consider MI3 canon

Black Ops: the numbers mason!
Interrogation.gif

and just recently
Her Story: came with like 4 theories that all tied up to the real twist, proud of myself, still shocked

Ghost Trick was masterful, its main plot twist (
you being the cat
) was delivered absolutely perfectly. It puts many big story driven games to shame.

Fallout 4 blew my mind.

Because I cannot believe someone would be so stupid enough to let that pass. I bet they pounded their chest proudly too, thinking OH WE'RE SO CLEVER GUYS.

Star Ocean 3 also blew my mind. Because it was so whacky and basically make a good portion of the game meaningless.

Phoenix Wright TT, the last case, with all the Dahlia and Maya business... that was freaking awesome.. And then they proceeded to obliterate all that goodwill with the exceptionally stupid and excessively forced Prof. Layton vs. Phoenix Wright twist, bah.

Undertale. Everyone likes to talk about
Execution Points, Level of Violence, Flowey being Asriel and The Fallen Human you name not being the actual playable character
.

Not even the No Mercy Ending can hold a candle to the amount of shock Undertale gives you when
you finish a True Pacifist run afterwards, RIGHT AT THE LAST SECOND.
.

It makes me wonder why nobody has made a Hitler Downfall reaction of this twist, holy shit.

Metal Gear Solid -
The controller port trick when fighting Psycho Mantis. Also I played through most of the game earlier on without saving and when you got to the interrogation scene with Revolver Ocelot he mentions not having saved.

Metal Gear Solid 2 -
When you stop playing as Snake, I thought something was wrong with my game. Then when the game starts going all strange with the Colonel Roy Campbell's messages.

Infamous ending.

Yup.

And maybe the ending of Limbo. And the ending of The Swapper.

Phoenix Wright Dual Destiny
Final big bad killer is the detective you've been working with the whole game

This twist would have landed way better if they hadn't
completely scrubbed Gumshoe out of the picture.
It just telegraphed the whole thing SO MUCH, to me.
The second they revealed that
Gumshoe wouldn't be appearing in AA5, and there's this new "Detective Fulbright" character, I was instantly like "He's the final villain, isn't he? At the very least he's going to be super important to whatever AA5's overarching story is."

I wish they would hurry up and bring back Gumshoe in the main series already.

I mean,
they hadn't done a detective big bad before so it wasn't THAT obvious. In any case, the way it played out was amazing. Seeing Fulbright turn into an emotionless monster with the Mood Matrix that followed is one of the best moments in the game IMO
.

Continuing with Phoenix Wright moments, I'm probably alone in this but in AA2
when it's revealed that Ini Miney was actually Mimi Miney I was like "WHAT?!". Like, seriously, who'd have predicted that. It took me long to catch on even when Phoenix was pressing about the car door and I was like "What is his point"
.

Pathologic.jpg

You go to an isolated Russian town to stop a plague outbreak. The town leader is dead and everyone is in a power struggle to gain control.

The disease is coming from some sort of patient zero

The disease is coming from the ground itself

The disease is intelligent and attacks whoever is most vulnerable

DOUBLE SPOILER
The town is unnatural, the disease is the rightful owner of the environment

ULTRA SPOILER
The cure/source for the disease was always available but due to the power struggles and petty hatred never used or revealed.

FINAL SPOILER
Haha nice try, finish the game kiddo. :)

Every day is a new twist. The amount of twists that occur in this game. They should of just put a bunch of twisties in the game box.

I wouldn't say it blew my mind, but the last scene in the last episode of The Wolf Among Us made me go "wait wut" and then "wait that's it? Where's the rest of it".

Where the hell is The Wolf Among Us season 2?

YES! Finished VLR last week and it was mindblowing

That the
MC is an old guy but never realized it
twist was so stupid and forced though :/

Kinda somewhat soured me on the whole VLR experience, to be honest. It's like the creator is desperate from some ultra super duper twist and thus it was forced in even though it's so stupid.

OP's right about OoT's twist.

Xenoblade had some really good ones too. Especially after
Mechonis Core
, you get hit with twist after twist.

Ace Attorney 2-4 and 3-5 were insanely good with their twists as well.

Undertale:
The character you're playing as is not the character you named at the start of the game, nor the one in the opening cutscene.

I've only beaten the game once and I'm not into the idea of another playthrough. Can someone break this one down for me? This is interesting!
