Two men jumped and beaten by police for jay walking...

What was that, 9 cops on scene for a couple of non-resisting jay-walkers? Crazy.

My guess is only the cop who starts throwing punches for no damned reason will get into something resembling trouble. Maybe a longer paid vacation than the others.

Sounds about right..

It was introduced before big car companies were even a thing. And it's not forbidden to cross roads, just not when there are crossings and traffic lights nearby. At least that's how it works in Europe.

I don't know about other European countries, but AFAIK it's not "forbidden" to cross the road in Britain even if there are nearby crossings. Heck, in many places there are no crossings. If it's more efficient for me to cross the road at a particular point rather than walk several metres further to a crossing (and thus have to walk back on myself if I do), I'm gonna damn well cross where I please. I'm also not a moron and know when it's safe to cross.

Thats not how it works in Europe. You can cross the road anywhere, even 20 feet away from a crossing.

WHY oh WHY do people fight putting their arms behind the back? you have 4 pissed off police hovering with hands all over you... and yet you fight letting your arms go behind your back to get handcuffed.

I suppose the average people are not used to getting pulled 3 ways by untrained chimps with guns so they act "unnaturally",unlike the crimelords that jaywalk on the regular.

Didnt know this henious crime warranted a whole group of police officers in the US,I live in ghetto EU with more narrow streets so I guess the dangers of scratching/covering the cars paintjobs with my bodyparts and blood when being run over are lower so police can just nod and say "dont do it man" then go on with their day.

It was still thought up by car companies.

The earliest citation in the Oxford English Dictionary is from 1917. The term's dissemination was due, in part, to a deliberate effort by promoters of automobiles, such as local auto clubs and dealers, to redefine streets as places where pedestrians do not belong.

Still messed up that it is a thing.

Also jaywalking isn't a thing at all in the UK.

Terrible thing that happened, but I can't get past the cops actually getting pissed over jay walking. I really thought that stopped being a thing years ago. Were these cops just dicks (they are) or do cops still actually stop people for it?

You can be fined in Italy if you jaywalk within 100mt (0.06 miles) of crossings. You can have contributory negligence from the driver if he was speeding too much when approaching a crossing, but the pedestrian unless he makes witnesses out the ass (it happens) is often at least partially responsible.

I can't imagine the boners these fucking pieces of shit cops get whenever it comes on the radio, that a black man has broken a law (no matter how petty).

Cops continue to be a fucking joke. They should all be fired out of a cannon and into the sun.

Edit - Everyone Jay walks in NYC. Heck, around Penn station, crowds of people walk on the road itself (the bus lane). Nothing happens.

Isn't the supposed penalty for jaywalking just getting fined? There should be no need for an arrest attempt to happen in the first place. They would just write a ticket and give a warning, since that is the what is written down as the punishment for the crime. I think the men can hopefully make a viable case out of this, because the officers blatantly say it was for jaywalking on video, yet escalated it to an arrest attempt for a nonviolent infraction. If the guys were blatantly on the street impeding traffic or almost getting hit by cars, I could see a reason for an arrest, but these guys were already on the sidewalk.

I've watched the video several times and did't see anyone fighting against having their arm put behind their back.

What I saw was a clusterfuck where one cunt cop trying to force the guys elbow back and up above his head while another cunt cop has the guy in a headlock and is forcing the guy down to the ground, making it impossible for the guy to comply with cunt#1. Surprised his arm wasn't dislocated in the process.

There's nothing to understand about this other than it's completely wrong and they should be fired.

This person was not resisting, so there's no reason to do this shit.

I don't understand this, every time I see this shit. Basically a person instinctually holding out their arms to prevent officers from smashing them down on their face for no reason equals resisting arrest and the need to have multiple officers beating you from every direction just to get cuffs on you. It's fucking insanity. It's like they have no idea how arms are actually supposed to bend and how people will react to having them yanked in ways that they're not supposed to. It's either let a cop power slam you or be punched in the back of the head for not complying with an officer executing an unnecessary WWE move.

"at least she wasn't raped"

" In other cities there's cops who are actually committing sexual assault on duty"

I can't even...WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS!?

And cops get disgruntled when people talk about WHY we don't trust them

Pigs don't give a shit. They make the rules on the spot and punish you for not following them i.e. doing anything they don't like. For example, that police officer who "arrested" a public defendant for "resisting arrest". They don't care.

How likely is a jaywalking law to pass in the UK if the Tories introduced one?

Seems very likely since everything they offer passes or eventually does since UK is so soft.

Wait did i read that right? a nt so subtle at least it wasn't another city where they'd have sexually assaulted (rape?) her?

I mean what the actual fuck?

America sort your police out

That was said after he said he wouldn't have been so nice..which has some funny implications..well, to us that want to be 🍸outraged🍸

The bike cops were too weak to put cuffs on that guy. Bike cops, DYEL?

Cops know they are above the law, not the law. This is what happens when you have people who love power and abuse it.The guy punching and kneeing acted like a fucking mma fighter. They can justify anything they do by saying it was resisting arrest or self defense.

And they're able to do it because it usually gets them off every.single.time. They are absolved of any wrongdoing because "hey, if you were in their shoes". Of course that sort of empathy is only reserved for the cops, not for the guy who's getting beat to shit because the cop escalated a simple altercation into some battle for life and death.

Cops need to change, but so does the public at large.

Different culture and all that, but crossing the road being an offence literally sounds like a joke.

American cops would struggle to resist their beating urges in the UK, jaywalking's a way of life.

The first time i learn of jaywalking was in some cartoon and tought it was just a gag for it.
Then i learned it was indeed something real.

Then i learned it was indeed something real.

how real it is depends on where you are. In some places (e.g. NYC) jaywalking is a way of life. In my town I can imagine a cop who wanted to enforce the law might have a few words or even (at very most) write a ticket, but restraining somebody forcefully for not crossing the street properly is a ridiculous misapplication of force.

Im still in disbelief at these gifs, knowing the facts that lead up to this assault. Im dumbfounded by the posts trying to justify the level of physical force because the victim "passively resists"....by behaving the way any normal human would when theyre unexpectedly assaulted. And need I remind you this is all over a trivial jaywalking citation?

This is the kind of shit I would expect to see in some authoritarian third world state, not a liberal city like Austin, Texas.

Exactly.

This is ridiculous to me. I dunno how people can walk around if the people who are supposed to be protecting you can beat the shit out of you for no reason.

A few weeks ago in the UK a man armed with a MACHETE was peacefully subdued, no beating, no guns, no unnecessary injuries. There's a huge difference in the quality of police work going on.

I fail to see where it's surprising is all. People are doing much worse out there. Can guarantee that. I'm not condoning him btw...

These things happen every day man when I was in college and worked at a family dollar cause it was near school I had to deal with all sorts of worse things. Customers snatching things out my hand telling me.they just got out of prison, just intimidation? Maybe not. It's just the norm I feel. Sadly...

Anyways I didn't watch any of the videos but like most things sometimes we never know both sides of the story. People will lie about anything, some people that is. I don't read too much into news stories for these reasons but if all the events are true then yes, he isnt a very caring man at all.

"Both sides" and "some people" in the same two sentences? Where do I hand in my bingo card?

As I've grown older the quality of our police in the UK has only grown more and more apparent to me. We've got it damn good over here.

Where was the outrage for the rape comment? Dude was reappointed in August.

Well... To his point, the most scandalous thing we usually get around here is a college girl throwing a tantrum. There is the Peaceful Streets guy, but he lost a lot of goodwill with the public due to his behavior following the officer killing over in Houston. Most people are fine with the direction of APD.

And he wasn't just reappointed, he had accepted the position of Chief in San Antonio but then Austin counter-offered.

WHY oh WHY do people fight putting their arms behind the back? you have 4 pissed off police hovering with hands all over you... and yet you fight letting your arms go behind your back to get handcuffed.

Just a tip: police interact with people then make it look like you are resisting. They yell, 'stop resisting' because that allows them to push a story that you were resisting.

In a physical altercation, they yank you around and blame you for resisting. They put you in a chokehold, then blame you for not responding. They bend your arm around in painful ways and blame you for moving your arms. The majority of people never have cuffs placed on them so you wonder why the 'suspects' don't just 'go' easier. But there is no way punches were warranted. These cops don't give a fuck.

This will fly over some people's heads because it mentions newspapers but the PR process by cops to keep their priveleged status is the same process by the media. Portray them as heroes and get people to handwave bad behavior because one of them might die on duty. Make every cop death a dog and pony show with 10,000 cops showing up, riding bikes, waving flags, in uniform, covered by TV, even if they died under fraudulent circumstances. And shout down any resistance, verbal or otherwise to move the story in the direction that protects them.

I would suspect they were not resisting yet made to look that way.

Old man gets tasered in his house, while tasered, the cop yells stop resisting.

Stop falling for these things people. That guy got 1.9 million. I dare you to watch this old guy get tasered, then wimper on the floor. And the cop gives no fuck. He calls the wife 'hysterical' because they called for a ambulance and the end result was the guy refused medical treatment and the cop tasered the fuck out of someone. And yelled, stop resisting while tasering the guy. They tasered a guy and cuffed him because he refused medical management.

Thats not how it works in Europe. You can cross the road anywhere, even 20 feet away from a crossing.

Yeah, you might wanna read the laws. I thought the same thing until about a week ago. Turns out anti jaywalking laws are a thing in most European countries.

why is jaywalking a crime, again?

I always assumed to prevent pedestrians from crossing in front of cars when drivers aren't expecting it.

I know jaywalkers are a pain in the ass when driving through a populated area like Philly and someone runs out from between parked cars.

"If the events are true"
"I didn't watch the video."

Maybe you should start paying attention instead of playing contrarian.

Dude they weren't resisting at all. They had like 4 cops each pushing and pulling them all over the place, they weren't even given a chance to peacefully comply.

The cops in the video seemed like they had no training whats-so-ever. I hope they're all fired. I think Simpsons had the most accurate representation of law enforcement training ever.

And even so, I've never heard of it being enforced here (unless someone was seriously endangering others in presence of the police), let alone someone getting brutally subdued for doing it.

Disturbing footage, actually pretty sickening. Completely blown out of proportion and excessive in every regard.

Our police would talk to you, depending on your attitude they'd let you go or give you a ticket.
