Two NYPD cops shot in patrol car in Brooklyn

See I thought he was burked or essentially crucified, because he wasn't being choked while he was saying he couldn't breathe. Not that this is thread for that. But the corrective action should be to not jump all over a guy saying he can't breathe.
"Well in my humble non-medically-certified opinion, if you can say 'I can't breathe' then you *can* breathe."

If there was ever any doubt that the NYPD unions have too much power, this is it.

Because they don't feel supported by their mayor? Too much power? The starting salary for this job is what? $30k a year. How much does DiBlasio make? He can deal with it. These men and women put their lives on the line for NYC everyday. If this is how they show their discontent more power to them. NYC was a shit hole a short time ago. There's a reason it's not anymore.

I would back away from this. Two police officers died needlessly because of some sick person who decided to kill them. . No need to try to loop Eric Garner's senseless death and the subsequent lack of justice his family got into this. These two situations are really far apart.

The incidents are being linked because the killer posted on instagram before the murders:

“I’m Putting Wings on Pigs Today,” he wrote. “They Take 1 Of Ours … Let’s Take 2 of Theirs. #RIPEri(c)Gardner #RIPMikeBrown.”

This is horrible stuff and my prayers are with their families but those linking the Garner incident are not that out of line imo.

As sad as events like this make me, I'm almost even more bummed out by some of the disturbing comments in this thread. 2 families lost sons, husbands, etc today. 2 lives are lost. Put aside whatever preconceived notions you have about minorities or police and think about that.

I live in NYC. I'm African American, and I'm scared. This is not the way to "protest." This is not the way to bring about change.

Prayers to the families, and may God have mercy on those two officers.

It's just some stupid asshole with a shitty life. He tried to kill his girlfriend. He had nothing going for himself. There is no conversation to be had and no lesson to be learned. This wasn't a mode of protest or a commentary on *anything*. Just some angry goober with access to a gun.

I don't understand the Mayor's role in all of this/why we are even talking about him... what's the deal?

Police are angry at the Mayor for ordering mandatory police retraining after the Eric Garner incident and, in their estimation, not fully having their back after the outrage that followed.

They were furious when he said this:

“Fundamental questions are being asked, and rightfully so,” he said. “The way we go about policing has to change.”

It's disgusting tribalism behavior from police where they refuse to look internally at what's wrong and anybody who critiques them is the enemy.

What a bunch of fucking babies. Like the mayor has anything to do with this. Fucking buffoons. All the "support" in the world couldn't have prevented this.

They're mad because they believe the Mayor threw cops under the bus with his statements regarding Eric Garner and his personal concerns about how his son would fare in a police encounter as a young Black male.

Personally I think it's petty and silly that they'd hold it against him.

They're not at war with the public, just us niggas.

This post nails it.

What kind of power does the mayor have to reform the police? I'm realizing I'm not well versed in local governance structures.

They aren't blaming the mayor for this. They were already upset with the mayor before this incident happened, they felt the mayor's office was working against them or was attacking them in order to appease the public/scapegoating/etc etc.

This was probably not the right venue to pull this kind of shit, though. Two officers died and you turned it into a statement of some sort.

You don't take lives to make change for the better.

I think it is safe to assume that this guy was just mentally deranged and that he wasn't actually trying to create change. I mean he shot his ex gf this morning also.

He might have posted about garner it but I think he was just going for infamy before killing himself.

Yeah, they do have a right to be pissed off though, the whole force is being blamed for the actions of a couple of officers. He really help fan the flames for the protest too by his comments after the decision too.

I'm sure he isn't the only one blaming the Mayor:

Rob Nelson ‏@RobNelsonABC7

POLICE UNION PRES. PAT LYNCH: "The mayor's hands are literally dripping with our blood because of his words, actions and policies" @ABC7NY

No ones at wars with "us niggas" I work in predominantly minority neighborhood and am proud to serve the people here on a daily basis - so much good done here is never reported, on a daily basis we have such positive and great community relations and then it takes one thing to break it. Don't believe the hype, the best part of putting on a uniform is helping people.

|If cops don;t want the blame they should stop protecting murderers just because they happen to also be cops.

Woah. I wasn't fully aware why they were turning their backs on him and such. The fact that officers are blaming him to the point of saying there's "blood in his hands" when he said something so fair and reasonable as "The way we go about policing has to change." is truly scary and says a LOT about where these officers are actually coming from. They're afraid of losing their immunity within the justice system and having to actually face consequences for their actions.

I mean he can have pretty wide ranging impact. He appoints the police commissioner, for example, who literally serves the Mayor. So if the Mayor asserts pressure on the commissioner to get something done, it's usually considered all but a command. There is often internal conflict between the Commissioner and the Chief of the Department, since Officers usually view the Chief as "one of them" since he had to rise through the ranks to get that position. And it follows they view the Commissioner as the "outsider" who is trying to rain on their carefully understood internal politics.

That said, if the Mayor says "you need to enforce retraining" that will be done because Commissioner handles all day-to-day operations of the Police Force.

Contract negotiations broke down and are heading to arbitration. The police want more money and easier work rules. That's behind a lot of Lynch's stunts.

I live in the neighborhood where these cops were murdered. Most of us here see the police as a whole as an entity that creates more problems than they solve.

The whole force is being blamed because the force doesn't do enough to hold the officers that do wrong accountable, the whole institution is fucked and the mayor was entirely justified in calling them out.

I'm curious, what's the overall feeling in NYC over these events? Everyone I've heard from has said that a whole lot of folks aren't exactly torn up over this.
