Ubisoft expects Watch Dogs to sell more than 6.2 million units

That's about the average for a Saints Row title right? Even LA Noire shipped 4 million. I guess this isn't the "10 million to break even" ip Cliffy was trolling about.

Seems like a conservative estimate considering the number of platforms the game is launching on. I think 10 million is very doable assuming the game doesn't suck and it gets AssCreed-like marketing saturation.

I still don't see any appeal. No matter how many trailers I watch, they all do nothing for me.

But hey, it happened before. Ass Creed 1 was an awesome, polished product, right?

It will probably end up selling a bit over 10m lifetime. This should be obtainable relatively quickly (assuming next gen consoles are out at launch)

I keep saying I respect Ubisoft's hustle. They know how to run a business. I don't doubt they'll reach that number for this game.
Review scores don't mean anything
Some publishers certainly think so. Obsidian's bonus for New Vegas was tied to the metascore. Funcom partially blamed TSW's metascore for that game's failure.

Seems reasonable. Although I think AC:IV is going to hurt it in all honesty.

If I could only pick one I would probably go ACIV>Watchdogs. Pirates, the carribiean, navel exploration, and combat, just sounds fantastic and is more interesting to me then what I have seen of Watchdogs.

I will likely end up with both though.

I could see it, though depends really if the PS/360 ports are bad, obviously it will be missing some things but if they are as good the AC games then they could past that easy. If current ports are bad should be interesting Wii U sales.

All this "franchise only", "6.2 mio" etc. talk gives the impression Ubisoft has no love for games, that the first target is not to make a good game but one that is a cash cow. They seem to have no intention at all to make the best game possible. Expect a lot of DLC, Cliffhangers and Fifa-style "take out a feature and praise it as new two years later"-stuff.

I cancelled my pre-order because I don't have faith in Ubisoft to deliver a quality open world experience if they plan this to be a franchise. I bet Watch Dogs will just be a mindless mission grind with an open world that nobody cares about.

And the cellphone gimmick mechanic.

People like big budget theme parks.

I think a lot of people were blindsided by it being the first real "next gen" game they were exposed to and it led to an amount of hype that the game wont actually back up.

All the gameplay I've seen looks really derivative and bland, coupled with cutscenes that make it seem like something it's not.

For PS3/360/Wii U owners, it's just another game. For PC/PS4/XBO, it's one of the first stabs at a next gen sandbox.

I guess, but I'm getting a PS4 and I'm not getting this game for it. That seems like a really flimsy justification for the hype this game is getting.

If this is a lifetime goal I think they will be fine, but if this is initial sales there are some concerns. They're competing against GTAV, AC4 and next gen launches (how many games do people usually buy with a new console?). They have a lot of competition. I'm sure they know what they are doing.

I actually think this may be a challenge. We're getting to a point where we have too many games expected to do 5+ million each all releasing at once.

At first it was Call of Duty, Assassin's Creed, and maybe a Halo or GT. This holiday it'll be Call of Duty, Assassin's Creed, Battlefield, Watch Dogs, GTAV, plus console launches and launch titles like Forza and Killzone that you know MS and Sony are going to try and make perform better than they have historically.

They'll be cannibalizing each other to at least some degree. There's only so many consumer dollars to go around.

That is my fear. I was interested in it when I first saw the game, but after seeing it this e3 I am just gonna wait on it and see. I really see it as being bland and drab, but I hope I am wrong.

Interesting, like you I was very interested in it when first seeing it last year. However watching recent gameplay videos only solidified my decision to buy it. Everything about it looks great to me.

Yeah idk after watching this years E3 demo I just wasn't wowed. I am not saying it is going to be bad, I just lost interest after seeing the guns come out. I wished it would have been full on hacking, but who knows the game could be awesome and I could end up loving it. I hope that is the way it goes.

It does look a bit soulless at this point. And considering the game takes place in the present, I get an odd sense of Assassin's Creed deja vu when watching videos.

Ehh, mixing both guns and hacking seems like the perfect mix. Aiden achieves his objectives best by blending both tactics together. I wouldn't have it either extreme. 100% guns only wouldn't have been exciting, and vice versa with just hacking only.

You could probably get through the game without using guns. At least, I hope that's an option.

this and the assassin's creed comparisons are both funny to me because on the insert credit podcast tim rogers basically said watch dogs was this generations AC. it is being marketed down our throats and as a result it will likely sell to the mainstream, instead of or in addition to the core gamer. so soulless sounds about right, but im sure its polish is enough to sell a few million copies.

I think a lot of people buying next gen consoles will end up buying it as most the launch games are poor. And there aren't many decent single player games for them.

I think it will because it doesn't have much competition come PS4/XBone launch. If it was a 2014 title, I don't think it'd do as well.

I have a bad feeling about this game. I bet it will be like assassins creed 1 where they spent all their time building the world and not enough time making sure you had fun missions to go on. Prove me wrong Ubi, I want to love this game.

I think it is going to sell well, but 6.2 million for a new ip is very high expectations. Hopefully it doesnt need to sell that much to turn a profit or be successful. It looks like an interesting new ip that would get better with a sequel, but setting goals of 6 millions is a good way to kill a new ip. Insane companies are putting such high goals on a new ip.

Take into account that this was also one of the day one guaranteed PS4 launch day bundles for Amazon. If you weren't lucky enough to get the launch edition pre-ordered then you had to settle for the Watch Dogs, Battlefield 4 or Killzone bundles and the later also required you purchase a one year sub to PS plus. I'm kind of debating whether I want to cancel my preorder. I really want a PS4, but I'm not sure I want to spend $450 day one just to play Watch Dogs. The game looks good mind you, but there's something about it that's not grabbing me. I got sucked into the pre-order hype, but I'm seriously debating whether I should just wait on a new console and use that $450 for other more important things.

Does anyone know what the last "AAA" game was that lived up to it's sales expectations ?

I imagine the Last of Us either already has or will.

Can't seeing it doing those numbers at all. It's got every chance of becoming a successful and established new IP, but it's still pretty niche in terms of mass market awareness at the moment. Comparing it to something like Tomb Raider, with its brand identity and huge install base, I just can't see Watch Dogs achieving 6.2 million sales.

I can see it doing those numbers. AC1 sold 8 million mostly due to hype considering it got a lot of mediocre reviews and response. Even if it is mediocre, I think it will do extremely well. Then WD2 will come out and that game will be amazing. Watch Dogs: Brotherhood will be just as great, but Watch Dogs: Revelations will still be good but a bit tiring. You don't want to know what happens with Watch Dogs 3.
