Ubisoft found a 'no more post-release embargo' loophole for The Crew

WTF! You know done fucked up when you have to tout that you don't have a 12 noon embargo but a day of embargo.

What are they doing?

no, there is no embargo at all

there's just a thing that prevents reviewers from publishing their reviews until a set time. which just so happens to be the day the game is for sale publicly

but that word "embargo" that you don't like, well there's none of that mess!

This sounds all kinds of hilarious.

So The Crew needs to be played with thousands and thousands of people to be reviewed correctly.

But those thousands and thousands of people need some sort of review to actually want to buy the game.

But according to Ubi, those kinds of early reviews won't be an accurate representation of the game.

But people are less inclined to buy a new IP at launch without any kind of review, much less one from Ubi after the AC Unity debacle.

So where are the people that the reviewers are supposed to play with coming from? I guess they'd be the suckers if the game ends up being shit.

I love how they try to paint it as a positive move on their part.

Ubisoft: Good news guys! Because of our fantastic new policy of not having embargos on the date of release, you no longer get to know if one of our games sucks until after you've bought it!

Gamers: But uh...that's not really good news.

Ubisoft: Oh, we meant it's good news for us.

This game looks like the most boring shit ever. Is anyone buying this?

I know i'm spent on games and I haven't even picked up everything I would want to buy in the last few weeks.

Ah ah ah can't wait untill TEST DRIVE Unlimited 3 , ahem the Crew get released so that everyone can enjoy the highly detailled city of detroit , the incredible psysics of the cars that don't oversteer and understeer like crazy and the incredible Nitro boost special effects "The crew" has.
I mean the microtransactions already dictate that this game will be highly balanced

So , what could go wr-

This game looks like a recipe for disaster. Online only, microtransactions and no day one reviews. Ubi really trying hard to be the new EA.

so I know Kotaku specifically said they'd never review a game with a release-date embargo again

I wonder how they feel about this junk

I nominate them to post their review early without ever having played the game

What if every review site adopted Polygon's changing score system and just put up a 0/10, zero stars, or whatever and left that as a placeholder? You know, so readers would know where to keep theirs eyes while waiting...

Too bad metacritic won't change those scores after the fact.

"There will be absolutely no embargo on any type of coverage once the game is available for sale."

No kidding. Yay, for stating the obvious. How would you embargo a game that already released to the public.

If you buy this game at launch, you have to hold yourself accountable on this one. I won't be going near this one.

People should just post their reviews before they have the game.

I'm tempted. I could write a faux review based on this being 'Ubisoft Car Game' and see how close it gets to reality...

At a guess, I'd say it will include having to visit key areas to unveil all the collectibles and side quests you can do in the immediate area. Jump things, drive fast through other things, drive fast around still more things...all to gain minute increments on your character's car's abilities.

Story mode is a throwaway plot with ok writing and some good voice acting here and there. The real star is the US itself, with great environmental detail and tons of things to do, though they get repetitive quickly. All in all, a great base for future games with a ton of potential that goes unrealized.

I think Ubisoft has officially replaced EA as the reigning shit-tier publisher. Good thing I stopped buying their games years ago.

Edit: Forgot that I bought Far Cry 3 and Blood Dragon. I won't be buying Far Cry 4 or any Ubisoft game for the foreseeable future, until they stop making buggy games that have been chopped up for day-one DLC.

This is the first time I've heard of this game and it's coming out in a week.

I look forward to reading all the great reviews for this not-embargoed-but-totally-embargoed game.

What I really want is for someone to say "okay guys, here's my Let's Play of The Crew" and then just complain over a trailer.

This just in:

Ford announces they will not prevent anyone from driving one of their cars, provided the car has been released to the public.

In more shocking news, you can now eat any McDonald's food you like, provided you order it off their menu.

Stay tuned for sports.

Oh Ubi, when will you be smart for once?

When people stop buying their broken-ass games.

I don't get this at all. UBI you guys are a publicly listed company with lots of money that you can use to employ a better marketing and PR staff. After all of those underwhelming performance, I can't for the life of me comprehend why the marketing and pr staff still got their jobs.

Goddamnit I love Ubi now. I still won't buy some of their games, but damn I love them in the way you love that stupid friend you have. Comedic geniuses.

We will see more and more of publishers not giving advanced copies for reviews for certain kind of games, games where the publisher doesn't have much confidence in the finished product. Guys early reviews don´t make any business sense in some cases.

These aren't the behaviors of a group of people which believes in the quality of their work. It's absolutely their right to not give earlier access to their products for critics. Their motivation for exercising that right is my qualm. I can't speak for others, goodness knows I've seen flippant but ultimately empty claims to this effect. For my part, I know this much is true:

Ubisoft has lost me as a customer, for the foreseeable future. I was someone who would have been a buyer for several upcoming Ubisoft projects. I won't gripe or whine or lament how I'm unable to play these games. I simply won't talk about them, and I'll put them out of my mind. If a trend begins where early reviews are seen as problematic for publishers, then I'll look to those who are confident enough to allow them as works of note. Thankfully, we're at a point where even end-users create endlessly useful editorial output, even with something as simple as a "let's play."

Anyone who played the beta know if you get multiple crews on-screen at a time while driving around?

Like do you run into other crews, or is it just your group of 4 wandering about?

The only thing I ever experienced was just randomly comin across other racers. I wasn't partied up so I was just by myself. I did occasionally come across multiple people who you could tell were driving together. I mainly stuck the the story missions. But you are randomly thrown in with other players in side races. But yea at any given time there would be 3 people or so on my hud map for immediate surroundings. If you go to the full map for the city there could be as many as 20 sometimes driving around in that city. The cities aren't very big as they are scaled down extremely. Not sure what the player cap is as far as per server. But it seemed more static like destiny, but with more than just 3 people. Hope that helps

I like how jokey and laid back that press release was written. Hey man, they read reviews too!

It makes me feel like Ubi is just a regular guy, just like me!
I feel like i can relate to Ubisoft, i will check this Crew game, whatever it is.

What has happened to this company? How do they go from a pretty good showing in 2013 to this circus of a year?

Thankfully I've never much cared for most of their games but this is getting ridiculous.

Ubifactory!

Ubifactory... I'm going to start using that, if you don't mind.

That's great. Now I can wait a week for the reviews to come out before I don't buy The Crew.

I lol'd.

but that word "embargo" that you don't like, well there's none of that mess!

So basically this is the equivalent of a publisher sending review copies out on release date. That's always a good sign...

Am I the only one who read this as them simply saying that, if the game is available for sale anywhere, reviewers are free to post their reviews?

I don't think it's saying they aren't giving out copies to reviewers...

Come now, it isnt the fault of the PR people that they've been handed a crappy situation. Blame the higher ups who make these bone headed decisions and then let the PR people take the heat.

If anybody buys this game at launch, after all the alphas and betas and all the negative feedback coming from them, you deserve the shitty game you bought.

Ubi gets me.

They understand how it is to be just an average working Joe. They have relationship problems. They sometimes drink too much and smack around the people they love. They should really probably quit smoking, and totally would, if that bitch would just stop yapping about it.

Ubi can't let her win. Oh no, not this time.

Please note: I don't actually do (or condone) any of the things named above. It's a work of fiction. Thank you.
