Ubisoft's uPlay gets updated (now more like Origin)

Actually, the offline mode has been removed for AC2 and possibly others (but only on the Steam version). You can edit a config file to allow it but when you go back online it overwrites it again.

i cant even login to steam in offline mode right now, let alone play a game offline

if my net went out steam would be useless, while origin and this uplay thing will carry on functioning - valve need to get their shit together

at the end of the day its all DRM, i would switch to GOG in a heartbeat if they could secure the latest releases but thats just wishful thinking

I've never had a problem with offline Steam, no matter if my internet cuts off or if I don't go offline beforehand.

But I know that many do, just saying my piece.

Tried it myself. Why am I not surprised that it's complete and utter shit? Won't show all my Ubi games, most of the functions don't work, it's laggy as hell... gg Ubi.

Well, seeing as how I got Assassin's Creed Brotherhood through a code that got a Digital River copy I'm glad they did this. Now I don't have to worry about that stupid crap if I want to uninstall then reinstall later, and my backup DVD is damaged or missing.

I was reminded by this that I was never able to download the copy of Splinter Cell Conviction Deluxe Edition that I bought through their online store during the $1 error thanks to the download expiring (they actually charge you to extend the time the download is available, can you believe it?). Unfortunately, it doesn't appear in my account still. I have the order number and serial key ready; does anyone know if there's a way to register games with uplay via their serial key or something? I've been looking for a way with no success.

Just another thing I won't be downloading. It's good there are no Ubisoft games I want in the near future, apart from Rayman Origins.

Any word of adding Steam versions to uplay? In order to access AC II I have to launch the game from Steam but Brotherhood and Revelations works from the same uplay that run from each .exe respectively.

So Ubisoft opened up a digital store.

How is that like Origin in any way? You can still buy Ubi games off Steam.

Oh wait. It's like Origin because it's not Steam.

Gotcha.

I found the service pretty irritating to use when I bought AC:R. There were times when I couldn't play the single player because the connection wouldn't work.

Uh, i Actually didnt mind when Uplay was all about rewards for the player.

Altair costume in AC2? ill bite. But this shit is beyond control.

Well, even though you can buy the games from the same Store you will actually have to install X different clients and launch the games through them. In that sense it will change.

You had to download Uplay before I believe as it acted as the DRM enforcer. So yeah nothing really changed here. I mean the download might be a little bigger since uplay seems beefier now but you still have to do the same steps.

I look at it like doing the steps for games for windows live games. It's annoying an unnecessary but it is what it is at this point.

The offline mode for uPlay is more reliable than Steam's, surprisingly.

offline mode has always crapped out on me with steam, i got it to work once but had to reinstall windows and since then it has never worked properly - steam forums suggest there was a widespread issue.

for something as important as that, i expect it to work flawlessly like it does with origin and uplay.

thankfully valve have sorted it out

i think we'll end up with these companies having their own systems

valve steam
ea origin
activision's cod-hub
ubisoft uplay
rockstar social club

I've been seeing this system being implemented slowly as well. It's only a matter of time that Steam's success was going to be copied by publishers. And how do you get your client successful? Exclusives.

Change. It's happening...

It used to work perfectly fine for me until 2-3 days ago. It now says that I have no login credentials stored on my computer and when I try to log out to relog in, it just restarts the client but with my Friend status set to "offline".

most of that is gone, the launcher can be used in offline mode too so no

don't forget Blizzard's Battle.net

How can I do that? I got Battlefield 3 and Bad Company 2 on Origin, how do I get those registered on Steam?

no he means that you can activate EA games you bought elsewhere (e.g. retail or on steam or another download service) on Origin.

You cant activate ea games on steam, and currently you cant activate ubi games purchased on steam or other download services on uplay - only retail keys seem to be accepted.

Ah I see, thanks. Well, that's what I did with my retail copy of Bad Company 2 ^^

Disconnect your router and disable network connections, Steam should open.

that didnt help, steam would refuse to open in offline mode because there were no credentials stored on the computer

the issue is resolved now, it was a widespread bug with offline mode for some users

I can't wait to post comments about my friends' latest accomplishments in Assassin's Creed!

I'll also probably share some pics of me enjoying the game and join in some lively talk on the official forums where there will be plenty of insightful discussion!

I am so fucking sick of these jackasses all trying to create microcosms of Facebook for gaming. Fuck all of them.

Finally tried it... and it stinks. It's a shame I can't register my games, but even then, I see no need to use this client.

I don't expect them to pull support from Steam, they're not that stupid, but if they did then I'm prepared to never buy another Ubi game on PC. They treat us like garbage anyway, this is just another spit in the face.

Yeah yeah yeah. You say that now. In a year's time, when you're boycotting every publisher that has their own download client, and you're left with a Steam client with a bunch of aging PC games, Team Fortress 3 and random indie game tower defence FOTM part 8, you'll be thinking a little differently.

And I'll look forward to bringing this comment back a year from now like all of the doomsday ones when EA broke off a year ago. Steam's bigger than ever and Origin is next to irrelevant, they have to force popular games to use it just to keep it alive.

I'm embracing the inevitable future and restricting my Ubisoft purchases to Uplay, just like I did with EA for Origin (Although in that case it wasn't really an option). This means no sale on any Ubi Steam deals for me.

How do you get it to recognise all those purchases we made when the Ubisoft store accidently made everything free? Stuff like Assassin's Creed had no time limit but isn't in my Uplay catalog.

You say that as if we'd be playing other games if a TF3 comes out. Goodbye world.

FIFA,
Battlefield,
Crysis,
Sims,
Mass Effect,
Dead Space,
Medal of Honor,
Need for Speed

^^ if you have all of those franchises on offer, and you're one of the leading publishers worldwide, your distribution platform is never going to be irrelevant

thats not mentioning the influx of third party games making their way to origin. origin is here to stay, and will eventually be a massive rival/threat to steam - its been 1 year, thats nothing.

if ubisoft follow EA and go exclusive then suddenly two of the worlds biggest publishers are absent from steam, third party games will make their way onto these platforms because everybody wants to make more money, and steam will suffer.

it could take 2-3 years or it may never happen at all but labelling these services irrelevant is naive

As long as they still put their games on Steam as well, whatever. Publishers that hold their games from Steam are living a pipe dream.

Edit: Steam is not going to be threatened by Origin anytime soon. The two platforms practicallys shoot for completely different audiences, with Origin obviously geared more towards those coming from consoles.

The silver lining is that it'll take so long for Ubisoft to release on PC that nobody will care or buy from their store.
You're assuming people will still buy games in the future (or companies still sell them).

so i'll be able to download that $1 copy of splinter cell conviction they put up for the wrong price from a few years ago without contacting customer support?

their digital store (digital river?) was such shit on only allowing you to download 90 days after purchase.
