UEFA EURO 2008 thread of celebrations & unmatched gameplay

I'll wait for Fifa 09

U$49 and can't play with club teams and Brazil and Argentina? No way.

Anyway, I'm playing EURO 2008 demo instead of my Winning Eleven 2008 PS3 (aka PES).

Can't wait for FIFA 09 and Corinthians \o/

fwiw, both the champions league and euro cup games are required by fifa under their license with ea. the reason i'm loving this is b/c the pace is better than fifa 08 imo; fifa 09 is still a loooong ways off, and the euro cup just has me jazzed about football. the amount of content is certainly not fifa level (i think a sweet spot would b $40, considering) but the gameplay is very fun, the online works well, and there is still a lot of content (all the european teams, tons of single-player options like be a pro, qualifying, and reenacting famous euro cup moments trying to meet specific goals).

but of course i'm selfish and want more gaffers to play with. :lol mark my words you will have a hankering for this game come tomorrow if you know what i mean.

ugh. i was going to rent this, but my local blockbuster doesn't even carry it. fuck.

i guess i'll just continue playing Fifa 08 online and enduring the long wait till Fifa 09

Sorry for the nub question guys but does this game have FIfa 08s "superstar" type mode (where you control only one guy?

yep "be a pro" mode is in the game and is quite fun.

I figured they would make scoring from anywhere but 10 fet away easier in UEFA, i find myself still working hard to pull off an insane passing play in the box to get goals.

damn you can do that? looks awesome, i'll have to check it out....i have some cool ones saved and uploaded from fifa 08 but i didnt know you could see them online.

yeah you just need to sign up for the that ea football world site then make sure your ea id is linked to your gamertag. it's a bit convoluted but i finally got it to work

I just can't seem to score anywhere outside the PK box in EURO whereas I could in FIFA 08. And honestly, I've really never scored a 'pretty' goal in EURO - it's all like, inside the box junk that happens to go in.

CYC mode alone makes this game a worthwhile buy, not to mention how much better the game on the pitch itself feels.

But yeah I've been having a blast with CYC. It's safe to assume we'll be getting a fleshed-out single player mode like this in FIFA 09, no?

well you might want to switch the shooting from auto to semi in the controller settings. i've found my shooting has gotten much better once i made that change.

it's hard to get a clear shot because of all the defenders, but i mean you dont see that many goals from way outside the box in real football either....unless the keeper sucks.

Yea it's certainly an issue. A very very very high percentage of goals are from BS passing in the box or low crosses/passes from deep down the wing which are poorly marked.

hm i don't think it's that bad compared to real football (at least in the multi)--i've seen a huge variety of goals and that used to be the sole province of PES. i've also scored and been victim to several goals from outside the box. as usual almost all of my issues are related to defense and the play through the air. positioning for balls in the air is good but it could still use improvement. most of the goals on crosses result from the defender being frozen while an offensive player charges past him but it's not gamebreaking. that is one overarching issue to me is that you're frozen or on rails a bit too often. considering the slow speed of the short passes, i should be able to run onto them with ease without having to super cancel or do some other hijinks.

there are also glitches that you can tell are in there b/c they had to get the game out in time for the tourneys. beyond the invisible players mentioned earlier, in one particular stadium the volume goes up to INSANE levels for about two seconds at the beginning--really jarring. also the online custom matches need way more options like weather, OT, PKs (endless golden goal also PLEASE), etc.

still the game is great and there are a surprisingly high number of people playing online. almost all my games have been good and in the 20+ games i've played online i haven't yet run into a player i would consider cheap or using exploits which says a lot about the engine.

too bad there are only 2-3 gaffers playing but oh well if you are on 360 add me i'll play any time--pretty much only playing this and rock band right now. i'm getting mgs4 day one but it will definitely go on the pile while i play this at least through the rest of the tourney.

yeah I've noticed you've been playing this a lot recently, I'll prolly get owned next time we play. I had a good streak going on ranked till i had a couple of BS disconnects.

i'll add you kobashi, Patrick Ewing what's your gamertag?

Don't know if it is all of them but this was listed at gamefaqs

This is my first football game in a long time and I'm pretty bad at it... but getting better. I love it! The CYC mode can be frustrating at the higher difficulty levels though and I've switched from that to tournament mode now. I'll be online soon!

The licensing issues with football games have always been so interesting to me. Not only is the Dutch team of course licensed to Konami (man will it look silly if the winners are an entirely fake team in the game), but guys like Hleb and Chivu have their names changed not-too-subtly PES-style. Man do I hate exclusive licensing. Not having the Dutch is a really big deal (though not big enough to stop me from having this be my top game by far the past week).

So I'm going to start a league tonight just to have fun with it. I already have two friends I know will join. Chris I know you're in. Let me know if anyone else wants in so I can set the team limit appropriately. I'll pm you the name and password. afaik teams in a league can play each other whenever (you can even go to league page in the game and it shows you who's online and lets you invite them to league game) so scheduling is not a concern.

cool beans, i'm still sore about the 2-0 loss with portugal you handed me, lol

but yeah the league will be cool, patrick i'll add you dude

hey my first win against you; it should be cherished!

I'm sure it wont be the last your defense was driving me crazy. i had to drop the 4-1-2-1-2, i was playing better later on though thanks to the training. the game has awesome multiplayer though, that's where it really shines.

Nice looks like we've got about six so far. Maybe I'll go ahead and make an 8-man league.

Forgot to add tag is: bdosg

Might want to create a thread in the online gaming forum on this, would be easier to keep up with.

not a huge deal but number of fouls called needs to be increased. averaging about two a game in vs. just the blatant stuff needs to be called; though the lack of fouls does kind of make for a nice flow to the game every game has at least 3-4 "omg how was that not a foul?" moments. Barely had any chance to practice FKs :lol

Let's play some games tonight yeah?

League or otherwise. GT is in profile.

i've been working late all week but next week i'll be on a lot more, but i'm down for some league or exibition games tonight....i'm usually on gears but i'll jump off and play some matches if you message me

haunted one had a rundown in a pes thread:

PC: Once again, an easy win for PES 2008. FIFA using the antiquated PS2 engine alone makes this one a no contest, seeing how PES PC using its current-gen engine destroys last-gen FIFA both in the gameplay and the presentation department. Watching the "new" PES engine in 60fps during the replays isn't bad looking at all, which is a definite plus for the PC version (and one of the major reasons this is my preferred version).

verdict: EA definitely needs to step up if they want to compete here.

I felt someone posting my name, what's up?

is the PC version worth it? seeing it has the old engine and all
no no no, definitely steer away. The next-gen version is the only worthwhile one EA has put out. The others are just cheap cash-ins.

360/PS3 UEFA 2008 is quite good, and the version everyone can recommend.

I figure this thread would be a good thread to ask this in. HOW THE FUCK DO YOU SCORE IN FIFA 08? Also, HOW THE FUCK DO YOU PLAY DEFENSE IN FIFA 08?

The way I try to score is with crosses and I cannot score a fucking goal in this game. I'm even on an easy difficulty (semi-pro). Every time I cross it their's only 1 person in the box, its beginning to get really frustrating.

Also how the hell do you play defense, the other team just dribbles the ball right in the middle and scores on my every time. I using the A button to try to get the ball from them and sometimes hold B to get my teammates to help press.

Is their something to this game that I don't understand? Do I need to play with anything in the options menu? I suck at passing, defending, and shooting. Also when you guys are dribbling do you hold down sprint most of the time or no? Are the on the ball tricks any useful? Because I seem to get the ball stolen a lot from me.

Fifa 08 was not very user friendly inside the box, even on the lower difficulties. It is hard to score but try using some different passing techniques. Lobing through balls can be successful from many areas of the pitch (LB + Y on 360 with new analog). Also try the different types of long passes (multi-presses of the long pass button) for passes that vary from the front to the back of the box and low long passes.

One trick to defense is hold the button for your teammate to press and you roam to the nearest defender to steal a pass, instead of both rushing the man with the ball.

Passing the ball well and working up the pitch doing so is much better than trying to dribble down the pitch and using Though it is fun to play around with those tricks on the front screen. Vary your speeds and do quick stops (hold both triggers) also make use of the R-Stick to push the ball ahead and in open areas.

If you have not tried the UEFA demo, give it a shot, as it helps out with some of the areas you are having difficulty in.
