UK: Clever Xbox One advert on Tesco Direct

Sony had the greatness awaits add during England's football game The other day. Dont forgot the tower that glows aswell which we have a thread about on here

Pretty clever if you ask me!

I think that's pretty neat all things considered.

Cool has obviously lost some of its meaning. Ok, it's alright and whatever seem more appropriate.

It looks like a website logo from 1998. Zero readability whatsoever.

But Tesco got paid, so it's all cool.

I don't know about clever, but it would definitely have been praiseworthy if the Tesco 'o' was replaced on all Tesco sites/advertising by the Xbone logo. That would have been quite something.

I tip my hat to MS, that is a nice piece of marketing.

Although the real big one is the Champions League. I wonder if MS will try and take that the next time it comes up for renewal with Sony. they have already got the EA FIFA marketing.

In the UK I don't think I've seen a PS4 ad yet.

the constant barrage of assassins creed adverts had PS4 endings but that's about it, during october there were loads of PS ads, but mainly for PS3.

I was just in Tesco checking on my PS4 order and bugging people about bundles, still no info.

As someone else in the thread stated, gotta get them clubcard points for my console.

Edit: Not sure we'll see many PS4 ads as the PS4 is sold out, for a long time, though there are champions league games on the 26th and 27th sponsored by Sony so there'll be huge ads there of course.

To be honest, Tesco wouldn't be my first thought when it comes to buying an XBox one. You'd go to Asda or Game, hell even Amazon comes to mind before Tesco.

It's a bit shitty compared to the job sony did on the OXO tower but I bet it cost less and reaches more people.

Pretty low standard for clever.

Cool way to market I suppose so, but not many of us using tesco direct if only for Day one, because many of us want pick up at 12am or Amazon.

I'm grabbing my PS4 there, but think about it:

24 hours so midnight launch
You can wait inside not out in the rain/cold
Their is a cafe to grab a cup of tea if your there early enough
You can send the Significant other to look at clothes etc whilst waiting
They have toilets
Not a very popular place so should be a small crowd
Get clubcard points

Sure ASDA has all of these too, but Tesco is closer to my house, certainly a convenient midnight launch.

Why Asda over Tesco though? They are both supermarkets. Surely if you are thinking Asda, you'd think Tesco (which has a bigger presence) and generally the bigger gaming supermarket.

Besides, where would you fit the Xbox logo in the Asda one :P

I think Microsoft have paid off a few retailers.

Xbox One features in the John Lewis Christmas gift guide. No sign of PS4 yet they are stocking it for release.
The buyer also told MCV that he expects Xbox One to outsell PS4 - he's the only one to say this.
ShopTo have had Xbox One plastered down either side of their pages for a while now too. Clearly pushing Xbox One hard.

Me neither. Seen that pissing Walking With Dinosaurs/Skylanders/Lego Marvel PS3 advert about a million bloody times though

I've seen the "4thePlayers" ad once or twice, including during Homeland last night, although I'm not a big fan of it. They might as well have dubbed over the Greatness Awaits ad with an English VO.

I still think they should have shown the ad which jumps through different eras of Playstation on the telly, even if it is 3 and a 1/2 minutes long.

Pretty sure it's just a Northern thing. We don't have too many Tesco Superstores in the Lancashire area, lots of Asda's though.

I admit I don't keep up with sales stuff, but I thought it was sold out yonks ago.
Both consoles will sell well up to Christmas.

Speak for yourself, I'm more Northern than you (near Durham) :P

But I see where you are coming from. We just got a Tesco near us in the past few years and in our town it was mainly just Asda before that for games as far as supermarkets went.

A number of retailers seem to be pushing Xbox One harder from what I've seen. Maybe it's a localised, per-store thing, maybe it's across chains.

But I think that makes sense. From the sounds of it, PS4 stock up until and including Xmas is simply already sold, but there is still XB1 stock to be sold. My local Gamestop recently reduced the profile of their PS4 signage and increased their Xbox One signage. Judging by Gamestop Ireland's twitter feed, I think they're sick of PS4 enquiries :)

I actually read an article this morning that suggests Sony UK is saving the bulk of their launch marketing spend for Q1 next year.

I thought Tesco was teaming up with Nintendo to push the Wii U, what happened with that?

As initially suspected, the only change seen in stores is that Tesco didn't dump the Wii U completely. They've certainly not given it any additional space or prominence. So basically the payment was to maintain existing shelf space and to send out a clubcard mailer.

Asda? No way.

Going back a few years, but Asda was fantastic for the Wii, PS3 and Xbox 360 launches.

Yeah there doesn't seem to be much improvement. Looking at Tesco Direct, they've actually added SMW3D for preorder at last (making a grand total of 7 games up vs 30+ for PS4/Xbox) and stocked some of the WiiU bundles. But other that it's business as usual and in-store presence is no better.

Never underestimate the draw of club card points.

Indeed! My PS4 game orders have been justified by money off coupons and the value of clubcard points when used in deals.

Diablo 3 - £45 and 1045 CC points worth £41.80 so effectively £3.20

FIFA 14 - £37 and 537 CC points worth £21.48 so effectively £15.50

Destiny - £40 and 545 CC points worth £21.80 so effectively £18.20

So yeah 3 pretty good games for the effective price of less than 1.

XBox One Square isn't even an attempt as clever wordplay.

Any potential of a future order cancelled!

That is an effective way of advertising for sure. It also associated Tesco with xbone whether that was intentional or not.

Probably cost a lot..

For those that dont know about Leicester Square, its an iconic place in London for movie and theater, if your watching a red carpet interview in London its most probably in Leicester Square.

@Ginger haha! Damn forgot about that.

Almost every website I go in has xbox splashed everywhere but no PS4, MS must have spent a fortune.

Seriously, seems like there is a hundred XB1 commercial every time I watch TV too. Especially last night on Comedy Central that whole damn channel was like one massive ad for the X1.

The XB1 is also front and centre on their Technology and Gaming section as well

Nintendo UK are going to wonder where their money went wrong (Nintendo UKs plan to save the Wii U was to "partnere" with Tesco and get Tesco to spam some of their Wii owning Clubcard customers with £20 off a Wii U because £20 is the only reason Wii U is a flop)
