You wouldn't steal a baby.

Though seriously, not thrilled by this, and honestly I expect it to be none too effective either.

Correct me if I'm wrong though, but reading through the summary, weren't the majority of responses opposed to the government proposal?

Don't forget he voted for the disability cuts.

Labour really need to be cutthroat and the fact that they still aren't when there's so much easy meat to rip off the bones gives me zero hope they'll be any kind of force in the next G.E...

We basically have no opposition... How in the hell did this happen...

Some piece of shit here in Ireland ran over and killed a 2 year old girl while off his nut on coke and a litre of vodka and got 5 years, probably out in 3.

At this point I'm going to just go fuck it, and work in Norway.

UK really trying to compete with America on that unofficial "3rd world country" badge.

Unfortunately people forgot what unadulterated Tory cuntishness is like and how the Lib-Dems were actually helping dilute the Tory sewerage flowing from parliament. Now everyone without money is feeling the full blast. Four more fucking years of this shit.

The prisons are overcrowded and we're going to add in more people that don't even need to be there. Gotta get the private prison companies money somehow (yes, Americans, the UK also has private prisons). Americans, we're more like you than you thought, except our justice system at least tries to rehabilitate people.

Downloading Breaking Bad DVDrip definitely deserves the same sentence as raping someone, yep. First they took away our squirting and now this? You used to be cool, UK.

Stealing money by tax evasion (as the Prime Minister of the kingdom, no less) is totally okay but this piracy problem is corrupting our youth. These thieves are destroying the U.K.'s economy by pirating our shitty BBC shows. 10 years as a maximum prison sentence is too kind of The Right Honourable David Tootooteeloo Hameron.

Maximum penalty should be a fine for the MSRP of whatever it was you downloaded. Fuck off with prison time for less than petty crimes.

Look for me on the local news, I'll be the guy arrested for trying to burn down a Nintendo exec's house.

Theres a side that has all the money and a side that doesn't. Its that simple.

Yeah, if this became law, a handful of unlucky saps would get hit in order to act as an example while the piracy rates stay unchanged. It's all stupid grandstanding to placate big business.

This has literally nothing to do with labour being an ineffective opposition right now.

The person above who said that the tories were diluted by the lib dems was right. That coalition worked pretty well imo.

This is ridiculous though, introduce a fine and be done with it.

People need to get some perspective about this.

The vast, vast majority of people will still get a slap on the wrist with a fine.

10yrs will be reserved for those that actually facilitate piracy by running torrent groups, scene release sites etc, basically the 'professional pirate'.

5yrs from now I bet you'll be able to count the number of people given jail terms over this on one hand.

And it's still too long when you look at the sentences for other crimes.

and the idea that any of that should render a jail sentence at all is bonkers in my book. And 10 years is just insanity.

That'll still be too many though. This is at a time when people are campaigning for prisons not to be full of non-violent criminals. Even your most heinous file sharer would still be getting more prison time than some murderers.

You don't want watch porn on any relatively popular pornsite?
I actually guess that is the one exception. I would consider paying for it if a reputable non porn sign offered it though.
I don't believe that, but even if it's true, my point is piracy is so rampant that moves like this are utterly pointless and a waste of time and money.
I kind of agree. They should probably just target the uploaders.

That example still points out the difference though. He "shared" clips. Thus he became a distributor. I still think his penalty (1.5 mil for 7 clips only downloaded ~6600 times) is a little much, but the idea that "distributors" are punished more harshly rather than the downloaders is still valid.

Like I agree that 10 years is ridiculous, but I don't disagree with the wording that there should be safeguards to ensure that minor infringers aren't judged on the same level that distributors are, and technically already are with the copyright warning stuff.

Well, let's see how it will be used. I'm pessimistic and think that maximum sentence will be the default sentence when it comes to any kind of pirating, but I hope I'm wrong.

I don't pirate, so this doesn't affect me personally, but I don't want teens to go to jail for 10 years for clicking a few buttons with their mouse.

Pirate movie = 10 years
Cause global banking collapse = No one goes to jail in fact government will bail you out.

Banks took from the poor. So of course no jail time. When you pirate, you're robbing wealthy interests. Of course you're going to jail. Priorities.

Honest question here. Has the Tory government actually made any positive reforms? Introduced any schemes to encourage productivity rather than penalize the poor?
