UK Install Bases: Wii>>>360>PS3

Gaming is huge in the UK apparently. I can't imagine any other country would compare to those numbers when population is considered.

Edit: Actually, I'm curious of the Canadian numbers.
 
Given the 500,000 extra sales Wii had over PS360 in 2008 I'd suggest that the 200,000 margin separating them isn't going to last long.

Ah well, could be worse. Barcode Battler might return and dominate through 2010! :o
 
Why are the install bases of PS3 and 360 being treated as one again? They're different consoles whose sales or lack thereof effect their respective parent companies differently.

I imagine pretty soon we'll be trying to include PC install bases in the argument.

It's just to show that there is still a healthy market for HD Gaming. I don't think anyone is claiming that Sony or Microsoft have been anywhere near as successful as Nintendo this generation.

But it still interesting to see that the traditional type of gaming market is matching the new more casual experience, but I imagine the Wii has much more potential growth

Yep. Both Wii and PS3 sold pretty much exactly the same in Japan as in UK 2008, but 360 only sold ~325k.

Hmm. Looks like it's got a ways to go yet, since Xbox did better than GCN, while X360 is behind Wii.

Rather than show another one-bar image, here are the three consoles from last generation. PS2 is a bit out of date, but it's the last regional total they gave for the old shipment reporting method.

Pretty certain I had read an article back in March or so 360 had surpassed the original at that time per Chart Track. Being that is all of the EU at 6 million (shipped figures right) and they now have an install base of over 8 million at the end of 08 I would say they must.

ah, didn't realise the Xbox beat the GC in Europe, thought it was an American thing

Actually, they are still a little more. Amazon UK has the Wii at £179.99 ($260.74 by today's exchange rate). US price is $249.99 (£172.54).

Microsoft was very aggressive. I remember seeing bundles with three games in the first two years. And a huge price drop in the first few months.

Dont forget uk prices include tax so they are cheaper in the uk than the us now

Depends on where in the US you are buying it. Some states, like Delaware, have no sales tax and thus the Wii is $249.99.

Let's just agree that the system is about the same price in both the US and UK.

Given how poorly Xbox did against Gamecube in Japan, it pretty much had to exceed it everywhere else in order to end up higher worldwide. (Though you're quite correct that the U.S. saw the biggest margin of victory.)

Just so I give everyone in here forewarning, I plan on hammering people when this happens.

As a PC Gamer, it's incredibly frustrating to see people push PC Gaming to the wayside. If and when PS3/360 gamers begin using PC/PS3/360 to justify their arguments, I'll have all the ammo I'll ever need. Any time someone tries to claim "PC is different, it doesn't count" in some argument, I'll be sure to slam this home. You don't get to include the PC when it suits you (that is, when you need the platform to justify sales) and then dismiss it as "not the same" once the comparison is no longer so palatable. I will make sure every PS3/360 gamer knows that their technologically inferior platforms are holding back my superior product.

You're all killing gaming, I tell you!

This reminds me of when some 360/PS3 owners go on about how inferior the Wii is, and then when a PC game comes along and shows how 'inferior' their system of choice is, they claim that the PC screenshots are, "too clean!"
 
So traditionally, the US has always goverened the overall outcome of the positions haven't they?

Has there ever been a generation where the US 1/2/3/4 or whatever, HASN'T translated to the rest of the world?

Only because the 360 is outselling the PS3 in US and UK, but it's the PS3 outselling the 360 everywhere else (bar Australia).

So does anyone think those smaller territories over time, would make up the gap?

Or is it pretty much sealed Wii>360>PS3

I think it's a very real possibility that the DS will end up the highest selling game system ever. It was at 84.33 million worldwide as of September 30.

Link admittedly according to MS the 360 is now outselling the PS3 in Germany, France and other European countries

In all fairness, MS cited Gfk/Chart-track when they said they were now outselling the PS3 in the major European territories.
