The only thing he has to fear now is the core labour vote just not turning out. Now that would be a disaster.

I feel sorry for Gordon. I've also had to go through over the top reactions and outrage at private comments and apologise for them. It's great fun when the powers that be (in this case the media) try and make you the 'scapegoat' and paint you as evil to have a bad guy in the situation.

I think the practice of fox hunting is disgusting, should be banned and was banned for more than popular pressure - not that that would have necessarily been a bad thing. I also don't think the Tories are entirely for unbanning it because of the ol' tradition argument - which is almost without exception bullshit - but because of practicalities to do with actually enforcing the law. Basically, the police have better things to do.

You know what? At this moment today, I feel utterly and genuinely sorry for Dr. Gordon Brown. He might be grumpy, he might be the 'clunking fist', he might've not fixed the roof when the sun was shining, and he might not be going for the electoral reform I want, but one person to another I feel sympathy with him.
Global Financial Crisis? Not his fault. Blamed for it. He actually DID come up with the model plan to get out of recession, which every other country followed.
Call a snap election? Media created it, caught him out, decided to carry on, fair enough I'd say, he'd not done anything wrong at that point.
Old Lady? Bigoted idiot, like much of the electorate when it comes to immigration. Problems yes, overthrowing us all, nonsense. This thread has already given evidence of the truth, that it has more benefits than negatives.

Has Brown made mistakes, has he got policies I don't agree with? Absolutely. But he's not a monster, and despite what people tell you he's not incompetent. as expected the real long-term damage comes from the way this story is being used to attack immigration policy by the right wing press. the story turns from: "after carefully planned election campaigning, a tired and distressed man vents in back of car, is caught on microphone and then tries to appease the press to make up for the pr gaffe" --> elitist and out of touch politicians use race card again to suppress any debate on the evils of mass immigration. thus moving the debate even further right and playing right into the hands of the BNP. aaaaargggghhh.

The Old Lady isn't a conscious bigot, she simply demonstrates the opinion of a large portion of the British lower-middle/working class public influenced heavily by the tabloid press, that their opinion is actually bigoted and f**king stupid is simply the sad case in this country. Sorry, but I'm just sick of this crap already...I'll never be PM, because I wouldn't wait till I was in the car, it's called being polite to people, I've done it with my grandmother when she's going off on one about dem blacks or whatever...yes granny yes, well maybe it's not quite like that...and later...Jeeze mum did you hear your mum today? Strategist guy on Newsnight is correct, apart from the Paxman interview, no news outlet has really given Cameron a doing over, no one is seeing how badly right wing the tory MPs are, every time its a story for half an hour, then swept away. No one has asked him hard questions about 'big society' and no one has dug up anything on him going back ten years or whatever either. Brown's been savaged since he refused to bow to media pressure to call a snap election when he became PM, and Clegg since people noticed people actually might vote for him.

We seem to spend half the thread talking about the way they are corrupting our society and politics, but does anyone have any ideas on how we'd even remotely go about fixing it. I have ideas about how to fight loads of the problems in this country, but i'm totally at a loss here.

There isnt a media problem in this country. The UK has one massive advantage over all other countries in the world: The BBC. The BBC is the voice of reason in political commentary but at the same time people who want to read left-wing, right-wing, big-titted girls, etc can do so in the papers.
