Wow what the hell would happen in that scenario? Con+Lib Dem coalition? Con minority gov?

LD+Labour wouldn't be enough to form a government.

If the Tories got that many seats they could rope in the smaller parties - the irish parties and the greens, etc. to form a government.

TBH, if it happens i just dunno how the government would function, I'd expect another election going on fairly soon.

very disappointed in lib dem results here. guess his supposed rise in popularity actually doesn't mean much at all. my immediate thought is that when it boiled down to it lib dem supporters didn't take the plunge due to the fear that their vote wouldn't mean enough. generally it's still positive with it heading towards hung, but still very disheartening what's happened tonight.

The problem is that LD are often close to Tories or Labour in vote percentages, but they just cant get enough of a swing to take these seats.
Ah. So is it actually 2 main parties with a large minor party type of deal then?

massive tosser zack goldsmith and his band of jack wills models win in richmond. classic checkbook electioneering, he poured in lots of his inherited fortune to allow him to bustle in and beat a strong local lib dem mp. fucking hell.

Here's an interesting fact for you guys.

I've literally got paid to watch the election results today. No classes to teach today. I've got two and a half hours left at work as well. All good. :D

Current voting share:

Conservative: 37%
Labour: 28%
Lib Dem: 23%

Lib Dems currently on 7.5% of seats. Labour 38% of seats. Con 49% of seats.

Gives you some idea of how messed up it is.

Well the Cons did massively outspend the other parties in this election, they were over £13million last I heard.

Look at it like this, take one seat has 34% voted for Tories and 33% voted for LD, Tories will get the seat, more often than not each seat (battleground seats mostly) is fought between only 2 main parties (usually Labour vs Tories but sometimes Tory/Labour vs LD) but often in battleground seats where the breakthrough occurs its usually by a few hundred votes.

Usually in an election the entire result of who gets a majority relies on low majority battleground seats. The problem is though, the fate of the country relies on a few hundred votes in the battleground seats which is insane as often over half the country doesn't get a say in anyway about how the country is run.

So we get Tories with 37-38% of the vote getting over 300 seats and yet LD with 23% of the vote only get 55 seats.

Unless you make some miracle breakthrough, a third party has a very very hard time pushing through to getting any decent amount of seats in parliament. this is why FPTP is rather silly as ultimately you have 37-38% of the country running the country and the rest have no say at all.

I'm tired and i'm not sure how this works - as soon as it hits 326 for the Tories, is that it all over?

as others have said, thats it game over, Conservative would get an overall majority, barring a revolt of backbenchers they can push through any policies they like because they have a majority in seats.

Home constituency of Liverpool West Derby still Labour - no surprise there, something like 20th safest seat in the country.

Yeah, thanks for that. I think that is one of the reasons I like the NZ system of proportional representation. We use that in our upper house, but our lower house is FPTP, albeit with a preferential voting system.

I guess a Lib Dem / Labour alliance is on the cards then.

I hereby call it - 'Labia'. I'd rather my government be a vagina than a big 'hung' penis.

Yes, too tired indeed..

Don't give up your day job.

Clegg said he thought whoever took a majority of the vote should get a chance to form the government. Wonder if he'll stick to this. Did he forget to tell labour.
