UK's Eurovision Entry is certainly.....something

I haven't watched Eurovision since Wogan stopped doing commentary.

Although my curiosity was piqued a year or two ago when I read something about an eastern European entrant having big breasted milk maids on stage... or something along those lines.

It was alright. It's not that bad of a song, though it will probably not win.

Off topic, but does anyone know if Canada is televising Eurovision this year? I want to be able to watch it if I am able.

yep that was polands entry last year

was amazing

I wouldn't say it is a bad song, it is just not a Eurovision song. Where is my climax and high note? Or the over the top spectacle, or the odd group of greeks singing about alcohol?

It will, most likely, place badly in the end.

Seems almost like the song is channeling some Electro-Swing which, yes, is a genre.

But this song seems stuck in a no man's land between pop and swing, trying to be both but not dedicating itself strongly to either, which would produce a better sound. Nothing about it was overtly offensive if I just listen to the song but the shitfuck lamecunt dance routines are so fucking shit and unoriginal, like something a failed contestant might attempt on Britain's Got Talent 2005.

To give you an idea of where they could have gone with this style if they weren't such pissypants, have some Parov Stelar

You should never judge a country's music output by their Eurovision contestants. Then they all look bad.
But how else will I draw up rash generalizations of countries?

Why not just do an actual swing song instead of remixing it?

Oh, wait, it's Eurovision. It's probably in the bylaws that the song has to have ridiculously unnecessary electronic beats in it.

sweden has a shot every year but they could win with the måns zelmerlöw song

the UK, of course, cannot possibly win with that

Norway has some killer songs this year too, and Iceland and Denmark did but chose boring ones instead :(

pull through balkans I need you :(

After Lordi won I thought we'd see a lot more metal bands, but it didn't really happen.

Will still watch for the odd gem that pops up every 5 years or so. (And always hoping for an appearance from Laka, the best thing I've ever heard on Eurovision)

Actually for the next few years there was quite a bit of rock and even some metal (Finland sent Teräsbetoni in one year, I also remember one rock song from Turkey and one from San Marino lol).
That said, everybody knew that Lordi didn't win because of being metal, they won because they were novel and weird for Eurovision - and that whole "weird stage show and weird music" concept is what you see a lot more. In 2007 you had the Ukrainian drag queen who placed a very close second after the winner from Serbia, which was followed up with a shitload of weird entries in 2008, such as Dustin the Turkey.

If entries like that make it past the semi finals, they often perform pretty good, but most of them just never make it out of the semis.

Always wanted to follow along with Eurovision, but my only familiarity with the competition is when Finland brought us The Arockalypse. When does this start? How long does it go for?

The first semi final will be on May 19, the second on May 21, and the finale is on May 23. If your country broadcasts it, you should be able to find it in your television program, otherwise you can use Eurovision's livestreaming service, which you can find at http://eurovision.tv/ .
Keep in mind that the stream is behind by a few minutes, so if you chat with somebody watching the televised version it might be out of sync.

The semis usually go for a few hours (I think 9 PM to 11PM/12AM is what you can expect easily), the finale takes longer though.

I don't mind it, kinda suits the occasion. I'd laugh if JTR are Sweden's pick, seeing as they were X Factor Australian contestants.

how is it even logistically possible for eurovision songs to almost never be representative of the actual quality of any country's music scene

is it like a physics thing

Because real artist would never lower themselves to this level.

(NOTE: I love Eurovision, but am fully aware of its cheesyness.)

I actually... like it? It's bizarre, but catchy. Not the same tier as Caravan Palace though, but it's all right.

Speaking of which, if this does end well, will France consider sending them?

This makes me think Latvia is in with a good chance this year...at least we will beat the UK :D

First time hearing Latvia's entry, and I actually like it... Really different from the other entries so it really does stand out. I really love Estonia's entry though and there seems to be A LOT of buzz for it.

UK should follow Turkey's example and leave this shit show.
Unlikely to happen. Basically we're quite a big member of the EBU even without thinking about Eurovision, and even then the money we put in to Eurovision, while enough to stick us in the big five... Basically it's a cheaper than an equivalent length episode of Strictly with nearly as strong ratings.

Surprised it still gets strong ratings. Post-Wogan and with the new format I assumed it would drop off.
