Uncharted 1 was kinda underrated when it come out?

Remember when they announced Uncharted 2 and that it was gonna have multiplayer and people were complaining about it saying they should focus only on SP and make it a masterpiece like Uncharted 1? Good times.

It's my favorite in the series.

When Uncharted 2 came out, I remember reading people saying that they enjoyed U1 way more. I couldn't believe it, but yeah I know some people that think the same :P

I wouldn't say "way more", and I only came around to thinking it's my favorite with the PS4 Collection and the improvements, but yeah.

Among Thieves is also incredible. Some insanely good encounter design in that game, and the variety and quality in environments still blows me away.

I loved Uncharted 1. Didn't like 2 enough to finish it, didn't touch 3 or 4.

Uncharted one gets flak for bullet sponge enemies but on the whole I think it's a fantastic TPS/Adventure game. And this was coming off playing Gears 1 and 2. I didn't get a PS3 until well after release.

One of the very few new Ip's launched in the dreadful early years of PS3 that actually showed genuine potential unlike shit like Heavenly Sword and Lair. Story and characters motivated me to continue, the sequel knocked it out of the park and the rest was history.

No, I mean it's fun and shit but it had screen tearing out of the asshole, the shooting kind of sucked and some of the last bits in game were bad.

It was still a great experience though.

Skip 3 if you want but you are doing yourself a disservice by not playing UC4. An absolute phenomenal end to the characters introduced in UC1.

Was Uncharted 1 the best looking PS3 game at the time of its release? I do remember being amazed by the quality of the water shaders and general lighting when I first saw footage of it.

It's actually very overrated.

Still flabbergasted at the amount of praise that game managed to get at release. Other than the visuals, there's really nothing redeeming about the game. The shooting is bad, the pacing is dreadful, the few unique scripted sequences are poorly constructed, the story and characters and bland hogwash, etc.

I remember when GAF was discussing it as "Untitled Naughty Dog Project"...

It definitely wasn't underrated. It had a lot of positive buzz and sold respectably well for a new IP.

Looked great at the time (I was really impressed by the animations and foliage) but the firefights were a pain in the ass and the Sixaxis shit sucked.

I wish those features were still around.

Replaying Uncharted 4 after Zelda and finding myself fine tuning with the gyro and then "oh yeah... Wait. No motion here".

It would work fine with DS4's gyros.

Underrated: Drake's Misfortune

I love the first one, it's really special. I was sick as fuck when I played it and have good memories associated to it.
It was two years ago.

Compared to something like RE4,it seemed elementary at best.

If this isn't a throwback I dont know what is.

OT: This was my first platinum trophy because back then your choices for Platinums was slim and I had already beat the game twice when it came out. Got me to back and replay the entire game three times though.UC1 is perfectly rated, love this game to death.

No, it was quite overrated and so is the entire Uncharted-series, though decreasingly so with every new entry. The Last of Us is the only truly great ND-game in my book; it really hit home in both gameplay and story.

I disagree, even in hindsight I don't think Uncharted 1 was a good game. The combat was exceptionally bad. 2 was such a huge improvement over the first in nearly every aspect. Story, gameplay, pacing, set pieces.

This. I played the first 3 games in a row in the Nathan Drake Collection and the first game is really bad, especially the pacing. I mean the introductory chapter is a gunfight and the game keeps that tone until the very end with the worst boss fight in the series (mainly in the mechanism around it
fight 3 waves of enemies and a QTE for a quite boring ending
). Drake sound like an idiot more than a thief/explorer and the setting is really repetitive: tropical jungle all the way. When I finished playing it I was baffled that ND thought this game deserved a sequel. Despite what you posted I think the only thing that isn't a complete bummer in this game is the story. Yes it's repetitive and quite forgetful but it's straightforward.

It's one of the best in the series

But because most people can't form their own opinion they jump on the bandwagon of 2 being the greatest ever.

Yea I said it. Come at me Gaf :)

actually the collapsing building and the train sections in 2 are brilliant

It's like my Mom who says every food is either too salty or not enough salt. In this case, I think the accolades were at the point my Mom seems to never find,..."just right".

The game was very good and got treated as such. Part 2 was much better and got, deservedly, even more praise.

Nothing to see here, Folks.

UC1 had about 10,000 more mooks than were necessary. The sheer number of enemies in some sections were more unbelievable than any of the supernatural elements of the game.

U1 could be great if the enemies weren't goddamn bullet sponges. I once shot a guy SEVEN TIMES without him dying. C'mon, ND.

It had some control issues, generally aiming didn't feel that great, and the game was also quite short, with no co-op, or multiplayer. Gears of War was offering a much more polished experience, with better gamefeel, and a fully fledged multiplayer component.

The only really advantage that Uncharted had was it's graphical fidelity. It's a very nice looking game, even today, but that doesn't excuse the 2nd rate shooting segments.

I still really liked it back then though. It hasn't aged well over time however. The standards are stricter now, we expect better controls, more enemy variety, and whatnot. So Uncharted Drake's Fortune has some issues that really stand out now, which perhaps didn't back in 2007.

Pretty much sums how how I felt about the game at the time

Combat is even worse today (borderline unplayable for me - if you play ps3 version)

Story was pretty fun though, I really enjoyed that, it got me into the series... but oh man platforming and combat was pretty weak.

Man, I loved the first game back when it came out. I thought it was amazing how Drake looked when wet, meaning he actually looked wet, not like... shampoo commercial or anything.

I was going to try playing through the series and then get 4, but I had to drop it at 1. I just didn't like playing it anymore. I've never liked 2 so I wasn't surprised I didn't like it in the remaster too. Now I'm just waiting for a good sale on 4 and I think I'll just play that one.

edit:

I guess I could've just quoted you and said "this is me," lol.

Not underrated, quite the contrary. Gameplay was just pretty bad. I played Uncharted 1 and Uncharted 2 back to back, and the first one was such an ordeal I spent nearly 3 weeks to end it. Fuck that game. Not to mention the atrocious motion blur that gave me headache.

I finished Uncharted 2 in less than 2 days.

I just don't think the deeper narrative of Uncharted does anything for me really, or huge set pieces, I got bored with 2 really fast.

I dont think it was.

Now it might seem that way with the time gone by and ppl looking back at it on its flaws.

I believe the remaster changed it. Took 3 shots most of time. 1 if in the head.

Yeah, the 60fps and bigger resolution helped a lot. This remind me when you get a new computer and test that old PC game at full max settings.

It's my favorite in the series. Everything became way too bullet-spongie after that.
I agree with this.

I sort of feel about uncharted the same way I feel about Mass effect. I enjoy the first one the most even though it's heavily flawed, but the series didn't evolve the way I hoped it would before the sequels came out

It sold like 7 million copies and was the consensus Sony first-party break out hit. critically, it got an 88 on metacritic. kinda hard to argue that's underrated. you just don't hear as many people talk about it because UC2 was a monster.
Though word of mouth also did wonders.

I still remember when the game debuted at NPD missing the top 20 with like under 200k copies. XD

I played the PS3 version and was so bored that I quit halfway through. But that was in 2013 so when it came out maybe I wouldn't have been since it might have felt fresher at the time.

That's weird because it felt like the first game was the only one that wasn't like that.

Headshots were fairly easy to pull off as well. I can really easily and constitently kill guys in one shot in the first but for some reason no matter what I couldn't do it in the sequels. Felt like the hit detection was way off or something

I'm playing the games for the first time, on PS4 of course, and I had always heard that 1 was bad compared to the others. I beat it the other night and thought it was amazing, so I figure I'm in for a treat with the rest!

I understand they probably fixed some stuff up with the Collection, like there's no motion control stuff which everyone seems to mention hating, so I think I experienced it the best way possible. I'm not feeling the story of 2 so far, but I'm only on chapter 4. Hopefully it picks up.

Playing Uncharted 1 years after release, I came away feeling like it was pretty mediocre. It was 2 that justified that franchise.

2007 was a holiday season with a lot going on, I feel like it kinda got overshadowed by everything else if you're talking about release day. It released mere days apart from Super Mario Galaxy, CoD4, and Rock Band, all of which were games that were much more widely available at the time (in addition to being more acclaimed).

It was actually overrated. Its a mediocre game. Had the PS3 not been so terrible at launch nobody would care about it. Its basically a bland 7 hour tech demo that has some of the worst shooting mechanics ever put into third person shooter. Its probably Naughty Dogs worst game.

The main difference is that every new Uncharted adds more story and depth and are much more spectacular. The story on 2 is pretty much the same as 1 but more nuanced.
4 changes a little bit, much more enfasis on story, and less action and insanity but they are still present at their best.

I didn't get a PS3 till around 2012, so I didn't play Uncharted until then. And, oh boy, it almost made me refuse to play the rest of the series due to how boring it was. Just nonstop gunfight after gunfight with barely any unique twists thrown into the mix.

Thankfully I worked up the nerve to try out the second game, and, well, I'm a pretty big Uncharted fan these days ha ha.
