Uncharted 4: Demos vs Final Game Comparison (Digital Foundry)

UnchartedGAF taking over.

GAF's own dark10x with another neat UC4 video, which compares to the original teaser, the 2014 PSX demo and the E3 2015 demo.

The conclusions are that the original teaser was a prerendered cinematic, to which the real game comes close. When it comes to real footage it's mostly an improvement plus aesthetic changes here and there, mostly color timing differences.

This thread's gonna go great...

It's think it's close enough to not matter. I'm certainly wouldn't call it a downgrade.

I think nobody with a serious mind would've ever expected the e3 2014 reveal at 60fps would be representative with what the machine is able to do. 30fps was the only choice and it looks insanely good, too.

Wow everything looks like shit, 4k/60FPS or nothing, come on Naughty Dog.

Yes this is sarcasm the game looks absolutely gorgeous

This place must harbor a lot of crazy people.

I guess that's not really news. :P

You must be new here.

Lol... Sure.

Anyone remember that Motorstorm PS3 reveal? People though that was in-game real time.

I never understand the outrage over "downgrades", unless they're extreme cases like Aliens: Colonial Marines, where the public was led to believe it played and looked one way quite literally up until release, when in fact it was radically different. Other than examples like that, why do people feel entitled to be outraged because a developer did not meet the target tech demo, which is nothing more than a showcasing and in no way a promise that the final product will turn out just the same? You aren't entitled to a product as its shown early on just because you caught a glimpse, and if anyone gets outraged over this Uncharted 4 "downgrade", then you're an asshole because you're quite literally telling the developer that they could have done better, that you could do better, and that they purposely gimped their game.

Hoo boy, the arguments I've had with these non-serious minds, right here on this very forum, regarding that initial reveal.

I think the PSX demo looked a lot nicer than same area in the retail game. I htink the retail game looks nicer than the E3 2015 demo, except in areas where foliage was reduced.

Its the most awe inspiring downgrade I've had the pleasure of playing.

More downgrades like this please.

More seriously, ND just shouldn't have put out that 60fps footage and then talked up 60fps, but they realized their mistake early enough, and nobody even casually following the game should have been confused about their release targets.

Well, Corinne left anyway.

I prefered the water in the PSX version, but in the end, this is still the best looking game I have ever played. The anti-aliasing alone is just pure insanity. They're wizards!

Heh, just to note, this video was not created to suggest any kind of downgrade - it's merely a set of observations since I think it's interesting to compare final games to older demos.

Only the teaser really outshines the original game, but that was basically a concept video, I believe, and the final game comes remarkably close. The rest of the changes are just kind of interesting observations.

Yup, the game looks great. ND never said it was going to be 60fps for sure, just that they were targeting it. And with the image quality, the detail, the physics, and the scale of the locations all coming together in a big way, it's pretty impressive they got it running at 30fps for 99% of the game.

Sony has a history of trying to pass prerendered footage as gameplay Killzone, Motostorm, Eight Days, Last Of Us teaser trailer Uncharted 4 reveal trailer. Anybody who knew anything about graphics knew that the original E3 2014 trailer was prerendered despite on Naughty Dog trying to dance around with words. Looking back, it was rather silly as there was no reason to pass that prerendered footage as gameplay since the final game is the best looking game.

Still, it doesn't come close to the E3 2014 footage especially when it comes to lighting as there is very little bounce light and global illumination in the final product. As a result, the characters sometimes almost look like they are bluescreened over the backgrounds. Hopefully, Sony will stop this crap of misleading consumers.

Very cool and legit comparisons.

Shame that they couldn't hit the original target, but they've been open enough about it for a while now, so I ain't complaining.

Also, hopefully Neo will be able to bridge that gap to some extent.

It's whatever. The final release is the only console game this generation i've felt is an actual next generation leap on an overall scale. It looks great, it's more open, and it's actually stable. Nothing to complain about.

We had to deal with months of people saying "If ND can do this on ps4 than other companies are *insert insult here*" which was exacerbated by ND's statements about 60fps, (before they reduced the framerate target ofc). It was pretty ridiculous.

Does it look as good as the pre-release marketing? No, but it's still the best looking game of all time. On console or PC.
Could we not.

Err when one of the lead programmers (of one of the most technically competent companies out there) straight up says they're targeting 60fps, and that the demo you're watching is what playing Uncharted 4 will actually look like, what are people supposed to think? This is despite Uncharted 4 being the best looking console game ever.

Sony =! Naughty Dog

And if don't think the original e3 was prerendered, just sparsely populated, ie just the foliage and lighting, no enimies or intractables or anything like that. I beleive ND's exact words were "in engine, in game", and I hold them to theit word.

I honestly think Naughty Dog beleived they could hit those targets. Just things had to get prioritized.

Game looks amazing. Only the first reveal outshine the final product, but the demos shown afterwards shows to me that they had some parts better than the final product but at the same time some parts were worse than the final product. IMO ND did a fantastic work with U4 and if U4 is a ND downgrade, then give more of those downgrades.

No downgrade detected...

The debut teaser was too good to be true, the final game is the most impressive game this gen.... that's enough

Wait, why is the conclusion that the original teaser was prerendered? (Sorry, I can't watch the video right now.) If Uncharted 4 consisted of nothing but cutscenes, I bet it would look as good as the teaser, 60fps and all. Because cutscenes use fixed camera angles, and have no interactive elements, you can do all sorts of optimization tricks that you just can't do during gameplay.

I don't see anything in the teaser that couldn't be done on a PS4. And to accuse ND of flat-out lying several times is a pretty serious accusation.

Hopefully, Sony will stop this crap of misleading consumers.

While I don't disagree, every video put out afterwards was legit. Not exactly misleading consumers unless they make purchases based on 17 month old teasers, and completely ignore the actual previews...

Main difference seems to be that the final game is more colourful. I quite like the less colourful foliage though.
Me too for some reason, I just liked the duller lighting in the PSX2014 demo than the final version. The colors really pop in the town demo from E3 2015 though. Regardless of whether or not there are downgrades, I've still have had plenty of wide-eyed moments of saying holy shit at my screen while playing.

Could we not.
He's got a point though. I really would like to see a PC game released right now, that as a complete package (animation, level design, IQ, etc) looks better than Uncharted 4, (30 FPS notwithstanding).

Not saying it doesn't exist, but I'm failing to recall one.

There's no accusations of lying in there. I'm not convinced that it was real-time, though. Besides the 60fps frame-rate, which is possible in a cut-scene situation, it's the image quality that leads me to believe it wasn't real-time. It basically looks as if it were downsampled from a very high resolution. The final game has outstanding image quality, but it's still not on par with that teaser - which could only have been achieved at a resolution above 1080p, I feel.

I do think it was made using the renderer and tools for the game, though, but I doubt it was actually real-time. If not for the image quality, I could believe it was real-time.
