Greg Miller moderates a panel with Neil Druckmann, Nolan North, Richard McGonagle, Troy Baker and Laura Bailey

Relevant information

- Project been in development for four years. (first couple likely pre-production with small team, while the rest of the studio worked on TLOU) Also directors changed in early 2014.

- 300 devs working on it

- Not all of the game uses face capture (they started using it midway through production)

- Laura Bailey's character cast before race was chosen.

- Bailey plays Nadine Ross, a South African character and the leader of an army-for-hire called Shoreline that plays into the events of the game

Also features higher quality footage of the Nadine and Sully cutscene. (Not by much though)

At 16:42.

I feel like we didn't learn enough from this panel other than the fact that everyone is very thankful to be a part of this game.

No interesting questions thrown out by the Miller.

Although Neil's response to the Nadine controversy shed some interesting light on the matter.

I wanted to know more about the implications of the branching dialogue paths.

Be honest, do you want to know anything about the game ?
I feel like just give me the goddamn game, I am sold since you announced it.

"Controversy" is too strong a word, really.

I did want to know more about how the branching paths will impact the game. To what extent will the impact be! But I know what you're saying; I dont want to know more about the story.

True. That whole kerfuffle was frustrating; the decision didnt bother me at all.

It was frustrating because people kept trying to paint people's reactions as universally "outrage" and to write off the discussion entirely. I'm glad Druckmann acknowledged it because it would've been immature to try to ignore it.

I loved the panel and how they showed the one scene with Sully and Nadine all the way from the acting to the final scene in the game. It was amazing how closely the facial expressions followed the characters on screen.

So it looks like the dialogue options won't really change the narrative. It's just a way to provide a little interactivity. I don't know how I feel about this but I'm sure the story is going to surpass my expectations.

Funny, it wasn't that long ago that we had the "what is going on at Naughty Dog?!!" threads and now we find out that, if each dev were given a number, Druckmann could fire one a day starting January 1st and not run out until October.

Just kidding, I love your work, Neil. Just don't kill Sully or I'll be a saaaaad panda.

In addition to the fact that UC4 seems bigger in scale than previous UC,300 devs is probably because the game had to start over-after scrapping all or most of Amy Hennig's material-and crunch its way to the release date.

Yeah, Naughty Dog games are linear stories...I'm not sure why people thought a few dialogue choices meant it was going all Telltale. It's just a cool way to add some more interactivity, something they are always pushing themselves to do. Their mantra is basically put you in control whenever possible and this is just expanding on that.

Man, I hope the campaign is like 15 hours long. Hopefully they don't have to sacrifice too much quantity for the quality

I'm pretty concerned about dialogue options. Could really mess up the flow of the cutscenes in the game. As of right now, i would most likely prefer an non-interactive storyline than some extra that doesn't change anything.

It looks like ND wants to embrace the "IT'S A GAME, NOT A MOVIE". Could be great, but i'm really concerned.

I was at this panel, it was a lot of fun and Nolan was hilarious as expected.

300 people is quite alot ND has gotten big.

Not sure how I feel about this. Weren't they a much smaller studio in the UC2 days? Such a far cry from the top first party devs 10 years ago like Bungie making great games with teams under 100.

In terms of content UC4 will essentially have had ~2 year development cycle due to the change in directors and scrapped content, although Nolan did mention it's been in the works for 4 years. On the tech side however I'm sure they've been experimenting with stuff since UC3 wrapped up too.

That would be pretty long. The first 3 Uncharted games took me around:

U1: 5.5 hours
U2: 7.5 hours
U3: 8 hours

I'd be surprised if U4 was much longer than those, but it would certainly be pleasant if that was the case. TLOU was around 14-16 so it's not impossible.

They already confirmed that it was the biggest uncharted they've made (in lenght). I expect 10h+

I wouldn't be surprised if both playable length and cutscenes each saw an increase, especially the latter. It's their last go 'round with the crew that I'm sure they've all grown very attached to. Seems natural they'd want to go a little heavier with the story.

They probably had a lot of people come over after completion of TLOU, so its a bit misleading. 4 years dev time is pretty cool though, I love playing games with 4 years dev time because you really feel the quality and effort that went into the game.

Take TLOU for example, the sheer density of the environments and assets on display was impressive as well as its cohesiveness with the narrative. Something like that isn't really found in games with 2 years dev time or less. It just feels like a richer experience.

From the little I've seen so far (massive media blackout), it looks like a special game.

Just finished watching it, so good.
So much incredible talent on that stage. We've come such a long way, I'm really happy that the industry has such incredible talent at its disposal now.

The 4 year cycle is misleading. The director change happened early 2014 apparently and much of the mocap work was scrapped. In terms of gameplay after the PSX demo last year Straley had said they had only recently put together the core gameplay mechanics and began building the rest of the game from there.

Still though I'm sure a lot of art and technical work done throughout the 4 years held up even with the changes at the highest level.

10 years ago games were nowhere near as impressive as they are now. It's pretty insane how tech has grown in this industry.

Sometimes not even 4 years is enough for game development. >_> Not to mention they had to delay it and repurposed quite a lot.

Also I wonder how noticeable the difference between scenes without facial capture and scenes that have them is. There a ton of subtlety that just can't be replicated with keyframing, especially with photo realistic models. :/

Neils no no no nooo reaction and what sully said was a huge spoiler.

I think it was more that he thought they were going to say something else, but calmed once it processed in his head. But we are all expecting someone(s) to die, regardless. They want them feels with some of TLoU vibes.

Since you watched the whole thing and been apart of allot of GAF Uncharted 4 forums read this.
I have seen plenty of Gafers say it would break them if any of the iconic charters died especially Sully. When Nolan said everyone dies and Sully said except me that was a huge fucking spoiler dude. I did not want to know whether or not Sully or anyone else survived or died until I played threw the story myself and figured everything out
found it 29:10 on YouTube avoid that part!

I didn't notice any real spoiler. How can THAT be a spoiler? People have been saying similar things for Game of Thrones for a while.

Its clearly edited out of this YouTube vid as well so somebody else must have thought it was a spoiler as well. I am skimming threw the YouTube vid and its not there.

I personally do not think
any of the main characters die. I think that is why they were being funny. I think his brother dies, and you are left with an open interpretation about one or two of them, almost like how The Sopranos ended, kinda sorta, maybe.

But that is just my guess.

I mean, there's a discussion going on about it right now, so it would be nice to know if what they're talking about is in the YouTube link.

Yeah, it looks like the entire game doesn't use face capture, or at least I'd hope. If we've been seeing face capture scenes it shows that Naughty Dog are novices to the tech, because the results have been less than impressive.

It was fucking great to be there live, minus the stupid controversy.
I'm so happy the Experience was in SF and still is for a few more hours. It's been my first convention of this sort (nerd wise) and it was a honor to be there.
That moment in the cutscene when it switches to different dialog options seemed even more remarkable the second time around. Maybe it was my seating location for that specific panel.
And a lot of love for the cast, Lord Druckmann and Greg as the host. I wish it was 2 hours of talk. Oh well, what I got is a great memory to have and I was in the same room as them all!

So very cool! I kept my eyes dry unlike during the Sony presentation, and I'm not one to cry easily.

I really don't think that's a spoiler, guys. But Ok, I can understand why some might think it is, given how Nolan acts afterwards if you look at him closely. Still don't think it's what we'll get.

It really doesn't spoil anything. Like, genuinely, it was just a joke. It doesn't confirm everyone dying, lol. Heck, it doesn't even really undermine the possibility of that happening.

Such a good send off panel for Uncharted.

Was pretty close to tearing up a couple of times. I think it's a good time to say goodbye and part ways with the franchise, but time and time again I'm catching myself that I will really miss those games and characters.
Cause let's be honest, even if Sony continues the franchise (they probably will and frankly should) it won't be the same.

Take a bow people, you've earned it!
