Anyways I got some hands on time with Uncharted at Comicon. There were two sections available, a jungle level and the spanish fort level. I played the jungle level.
In a nutshell it was great. The animation is amazingly smooth, the controls are intuitive and responsive. the graphics are spectacular. Progress was linear but it still felt like you were exploring.
Points:
- Enemies take a lot of hits to bring down. Seemed a little unrealistic. Othewise the shooting and cover mechanic worked like a charm. It's really satisfying to have this kind of combat in a run and jump action/adventure. The O button works a lot like the All Action button in Gears. It's both enter cover and dive.
- Enemies were aggressive. They would rush you if you just stayed in cover too long. Blind fire was effective for keeping them at bay.
- Jumping up/climbing up to a higher ledge action is fantastic. It just happens so smoothly and quickly. Hard to explain, you just need to experience it.
- Color seemed to bleed out of the image as I was getting hit and in danger of dying. It was nice visual cue.
- The game's whole aesthetic is so bright and sunny and colorful. It's a change from the usual I know but It seemed to a little at odds with the violent/tense content of the game.
- Didn't really get the hand to hand combat. It's kind of it's own mini-game with cinematic camera angles. I'm sure I was just doing it wrong. Still very satisfying when it worked.
All in all I am really looking forward to this game. It feels like a truly all round next-gen experience (more so than anything else I've played on PS3).
I really hope they release this demo to PSN. It's unlikely since there is so much content here, but it would a greet boon for PS3 owners.
