Uncharted: Lost Legacy or Horizon: Zero Dawn?

SolVanderlyn

Thanos acquires the fully powered Infinity Gauntlet in The Avengers: Infinity War, but loses when all the superheroes team up together to stop him.
I recently re-acquired a 4K HDR TV and am looking to get some good use out of it. I missed out on Horizon back at launch. I know these "either/or" threads get tiring, especially when it comes to games of different genres aiming for different things, but hear me out here and you might understand why I'm stuck between these two in particular.

A few things:

I will get both, eventually.

I LOVED Breath of the Wild.

I really enjoyed the focus on narrative in Uncharted 4 - by far my favorite game in the series.

I want to see what the PS4 Pro can do.

I want a game with a compelling story and characters.

I want a game that isn't too difficult.

I want a game with an interesting world to explore.

At face value, these two games are entirely different. But, as you can see from my list of criteria, they both seem to offer similar things, and in spades - I've seen a lot of praise for both games' narratives and characters. I've likewise seen a lot of praise for the high graphical fidelity of both titles. I enjoy the universe of Uncharted and greatly enjoyed Horizon's cousin on the Wii U/Switch. I only have enough money for one right now - which one does GAF recommend?

Horizon no question. My top 3 GOTY. Loved it.

Horizon seems to fit what you want more, especially the interesting world part.

Uncharted is good too, but very short and less exploration.

Both are amazing.

Uncharted The Lost Legacy could very well be the best in the series.

BUT... Horizon is currently my Game of the Generation along with Bloodborne. Fucking masterpiece.

If you're going to get both eventually, I would start with Lost Legacy because you can finish that in 6 hours. Then you can jump into Horizon.

Horizon is better with better story and gameplay imo.

So if you're not in the "I'll be very critical on any open world that isn't BOTW" mode, get it without a question :P

Personally I love Lost Legacy waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay more than Horizon. Chloe is much better character than Aloy. I even found open area of Lost Legacy much rewarding to explore than Horizon's open world.

Uncharted is so short that I would actually run through that first and then get lost in Horizon afterwards. If you start Horizon first, it could end up taking a while to get to Uncharted.

In terms of the PS4 Pro, Uncharted is the more technically incredible game, and some of the setpieces are jaw-dropping, but I still think Horizon is the killer app. Its world is beautiful, the dinosaurs look great, and there's more environmental variety. Plus a better art direction imo.

Do not buy Horizon first

I did this straight after BOTW and the lack of freedom in world traversal (climbing, gliding etc.) was so jarring I couldn't help but make a comparison and it put me off the game for a while.

But get it when you're ready I guess.

I much preferred Uncharted. Character work is definitely stronger.

If you just want something to test out your pro, can't go wrong with either. Both games look amazing.

I like Lost Legacy more, however Horizon will likely take up more of your time. There's not much interesting to explore in Horizon, but there's more than Lost Legacy.

Neither is too difficult and Lost Legacy has better characters.

I'm unsure about which looks better on PS4Pro.

He only had money for 1 game for now, TLL is amazing but it's pretty short that I'm not sure he would have enough money again to get Horizon after he finished TLL. If money is a problem, I'd say go for Horizon, it'll last longer until he saved enough also, Horizon have more interesting world and exploration than TLL.

You can't go wrong with any of those games.

I'll say play Horizon first, a whole new universe and a brilliant game. Gorgeous visuals and great gameplay, absolutely loved my time with it.
Easy platinum too of you care about that.

Other option then is to Red Box TLL and buy Horizon.

Based on your criteria, you can't go wrong with either -- both tick every box. Which would you prefer playing, a short tight experience (LL, 6-7 hours) or an engrossing, rpg lite title (HZD, 15-25 hrs)?

ULL now since its short

HZD with the juicy dlc at holiday with comfy chair and cocoa

Both games fill everything you're looking for in the OP. Based on what you wrote, you'll enjoy both.

HZD is more 'urgent' if you think you'd be interesting in playing DLC at launch, if not, then it's really just a coin flip.

Both are great choices. Both are extremely pretty and both have good naratives.

If you are comming off Zelda i would go with Uncharted first for 2 reasons.

1. Its always nice to mix up open worlds vs more linnear experiences.
2. Uncharted is self contained. If you wait on Horizon a little more you will probably be able to get a GOTY version with its "Frozen Wilds" DLC included

Horizon's amazing, but it'll only get cheaper.

The Lost Legacy is at a great price now, and a fantastic game - if it isn't the best Uncharted game it's just after Uncharted 2.

People seem committed to pushing the BOTW/HZD thing but as someone who loved both they really aren't that similar of an experience beyond superficial similarities.

Almost everything I liked in one, is different in the other.

I would go with Lost Legacy and I didn't play it. I did finish Horizon and, while I liked the game, I also had a mountain of complaints about it mostly because of how good it is sometimes and how it doesn't keep that awesome feeling a constant.

Going by previous Uncharted games (and since you said you loved U4), I think Lost Legacy is a safer choice and get Horizon later.

Horizon, no question. Both are absolutely worth playing but Horizon is on another level entirely. GotY so far easy for me.

You won't find a interesting world in Horizon ZD but it fits your criterias on the rest

If you haven't played Witcher 3 yet and have a Pro they're gonna release a Pro patch soon and that will fit your criteria fully it's a really great game compared to Horizon ZD imo

I personally liked Horizon way more than Uncharted Lost Legacy. Horizon had a huge world worth exploring, fun combat and an interesting story.

If you've played any Uncharted game, you've basically played Lost Legacy, it's the same thing. Go forward, climb ledges(omg that one crumbled!) shoot 20 enemies, listen to characters talk, repeat. So it depends on how you feel about that. I personally was bored by it, and the story didn't interest me at all. I still finished it though, it took just under 7 hours.

Horizon lasted maybe 40 or so, it's a much deeper, meatier game. Coming from BotW though, you'll keep trying to climb and glide and end up disappointed when you can't. Still a great game though.

Can't go wrong either way, so what is your schedule more amenable to? TLL is a self-contained romp that maintains a pretty high level of engagement throughout and is a pretty directed, linear experience. Horizon is a far greater time investment that gives the player considerable agency in choose what to tackle and when to do it. If you're recently coming off of playing BOTW, you might consider putting some separation between it and Horizon with a different type of experience.

They're two of the best games this year. You really can't go wrong with either.

My recommendation would be to go with The Lost Legacy first, so you can put some distance between two open world titles.

They're both great, sitting at #2 and #4 in my GOTY list, so the main difference is the amount of time you want to put in. I spent ~60 hours with Horizon and ~10 with Lost Legacy.

While LL goes toe-to-toe with the best Uncharted experiences, with many parts reminiscent of past successes, it's really hard to beat Horizon which establishes a new, engrossing IP with the greatest of vigor.

So I'd pick HZD since I think it was the better game, but getting LL out of the way so that you can focus on HZD isn't a bad idea either. No choice is a bad one.

I haven't finished either one yet, but for a few reasons I'm gonna say you should go with Uncharted first.

#1: Zelda might ruin Horizon for you on some levels at least if you play it too soon. Hell, Mass Effect Andromeda kind of ruined Horizon for me to an extent (though I'm one of the few who really loved that game).

#2: Uncharted TLL has serious potential to be the best in the series in both story and gameplay, and I will rank it higher than Horizon on my personal GoTY list.

#3: This is totally subjective, but Aloy kind of sucks and is boring. Chloe is awesome. Nadine kind of sucks, but she's not boring.

You won't find a interesting world in Horizon ZD but it fits your criterias on the rest

Maybe a little harsh, but eh can't really disagree about Horizon's world. Unless everything pays off spectacularly and I mean SPECTACULARLY in the final several hours (I'm a few main missions away from the end, tops), they didn't really seem to do much with what should have been an interesting premise. But I'll wait to see how it plays out.

I was actually planning on getting The Lost Legacy earlier today, but had to do some errands and I got lots of stuff from university, so I might have to postpone it :/ I'll get distracted if I get the game.
Edit: Lol at Horizon's world not being interesting, what the hell makes for an interesting world then?

Ive yet to play Lost Legacy but I can tell you Horizon shits on Uncharted 4 from great heights. Take that as you will.

Edit: Lol at Horizon's world not being interesting, what the hell makes for an interesting world then?

I personally find the open world of Horizon very artificial and very boring the Meridian the biggest city in the game doesn't look like really living and breading city.

This game gives me zero reason to explore.

An interesting open world is one that's fun and rewarding to explore. This is not one of Horizon's strong suits. It has plenty of other things going for it though.

In my personal GOTY rankings, Horizon is #1 and Lost Legacy is #2 - both ahead of Breath of the Wild (which I enjoyed).

Even though I'd rank Horizon above Lost Legacy, I think I'd recommend Lost Legacy if you're just coming off playing Breath of the Wild as many aspects you might find "samey" and it might be good to shake it up.

But obviously, both great games and you got a lot to look forward to.

Yep exactly.

This is something they must work on heavy in the sequel

I give it a little pass it being a brand new IP the first in its franchise and Guerrilla Games first time with open world building

Aaaaand there it is

The Breath Of the Wild comparisons have arrived.

...on a thread comparison between Horizon and Uncharted.
