Uncharted movie impressions

Watched it this weekend. Glad it's not a 1:1 adaption of any of the games but kind of a remix of 3 and 4.

Enjoyed it and would watch a sequel. That being said, i think playing Uncharted is better than watching Uncharted imo

here's the expectations

I wasn't including Monday, which they're doing here due to the holiday weekend. But yeah, a bit better than I expected. Guess people are starved to get back to the theater

I saw the movie this afternoon. Had a great time.

I thought the casting was fine. Chemistiry between tom, mark and sophia is good.

I really dont know why RT score is that low. It is a cheesy popcorn adventure movie based on a cheesy popcorn adventure game. I think the movie captures the soul of the games perfectly in that sense.

I hear it is doing very good on box office. Hope we get a sequel.
Movie critics are freaks. They don't represent the average person.

A bit better? The movie doubled your predictions for the weekend alone. and honestly even the best predictions done until a few days ago. It's already surpassed its budget and by the time batman releases it will already break even by then.
But you're right, people going back to the theatre is the best thing to take from this. That's great to see!

Audience score is at 90% on RT which tells me that I'll enjoy the movie when i go see it this week. Of course the critics are going to hate it, the leads are two straight white males and it seems like a stupid fun action movie.

Saw it today.
It was fine.

The final set piece was totally Uncharted.

My main issue was the humour. Every joke fell flat for me.

Most of the younger crowd cheered and clapped at the end. The game has lots of fans!

Well it wasn't double. 50% better when you break it down by day. I was going off 3 days, but since it's a holiday weekend they're using Monday. So I was at ~$8m/day. At $50m that's 12.5m per day, so 50% better. Lol.

Does this have a chance of passing Shang chi? I would have never thought so but it will need some legs. Shang chi had great wom

Uncharted has Batman in 2 weeks...but then it'll be quite chill for a while. Still 400M is almost a given at this point which is something i never expected. That's 2021 Marvel levels, lmao.

edit: actually i forgot Shang Chi and Eternals weren't released in China, which Uncharted will be...so not fair to compare.

I saw it in theaters and actually liked it quite a bit. It did feel like I was straight up watching someone playing through a Greatest Hits Scenes live action version of Uncharted but it was fun and it really channeled the spirit of the games effectively. The different set pieces seemed to have borrowed mainly from Uncharted 2 and 3, but the character development stuff was all straight out of 4. The movie completely dispensed with any supernatural or occult elements, thus poor 1 was not represented.

Movie critics are freaks. They don't represent the average person.
Movie criticism is largely dead in the Internet age. There was once a time where movie critics actually loved movies and tried to discuss them seriously and intelligently. That time has long passed.

The film is a lot better than people give it credit for. They've explained how Nate knew Chloe before Elena and how he had a brother by loosely using little bits of each of the four console titles plot points and set pieces to draw people in. Honestly I thought the movie was moving way too fast and not building rapport with the characters until about half an hour in when Chloe is introduced and the film stars to slow the tempo and develop the characters better.

The ending and two post credit sequence show that this film is basically like a prequel to an existing series. But the sequel looks like it'll be Drake's Fortune.

For those who have seen the film
who saw the picture of Sam as an adult and thought that's James McEvoy?

Haven't seen it, probably won't even though I LOVED the games.

But it amazes me people focus on Mark being Sully as the issue.

Wtf.

Yeah, it isn't a great choice, but Holland as Drake is by far the cringiest aspect. Might be one of the miscast / worst casting jobs ever on that part alone.

I get the young Drake angle.. but who asked for that?

Proper 40s Drake would have been FINE. Seriously, a more Drake like actor and I would have been down to see this. But not now, just can't fathom.

Nathan Fillion's fan film will forever be the GOAT Uncharted film IMO, just can't envision this one.

Side note, but I'm actually shocked Shang Chi did not release in China. That seems like a Marvel movie that was specifically made for China.

$400m doesn't seem like a given yet I would say. It doesn't have much competition right now, but it needs to hold up for the next couple of weeks. Part of that will be based on word of mouth. User reviews on rottentomatoes are high so that could be a good sign. Although a lot of the people in this thread that have seen it still only have a lukewarm response (maybe they're comparing it too much to the game). And while it is getting a release in China, it's releasing a few days before Batman so it might not do big numbers there.

Some info about Uncharted:

- Domestic box office at $51 million for opening weekend.
- Initial projections by Sony were of a $35 million opening weekend.
- Cost of production was estimated to be $120 million.
- Global box office hits $139 million.
- The openings came in 6% above Dune and 13% above Shang-Chi.
- China is expected to be a huge market where the movie will release on March 14.

This is a HUGE hit.

Watched it yesterday. Wasn't half as bad as I expected. Nothing exciting but the kid loved it as it is his favorite franchise. Nolan North cameo was cool.

I'm fascinated to see the Chinese numbers as they've been starved of good Western movies. Is it allowed there because sony is Japanese and not American?

I liked it. My partner enjoyed it. Fun popcorn movie and that's all I ever wanted.

Onto the next one.

Let's hope they bring Horizon Zero Dawn to the big screen as well.

When your original game is a better movie then the movie based on that very game... Well...
I mean...is it?

. Drake and Chloe meet off screen for the games and she was never mentioned until Uncharted 2.
. Sully and Drake meeting when Drake was a kid is an afterthought and only happens on Uncharted 3.
. Drake having a brother happens out of nowhere on Uncharted 4 and it was literally retconned when on Uncharted 3 the villain literally doesn't mention his brother but mentions his entire family.

At least here they introduced all characters and their relationships early on. They know where they are going with the story and aren't just making stuff us as they go. At least for now.

I agree here. I just came back from seeing it. Fans of the series should not expect the 1:1 adaptation and it definitely had a mixture of 3 and 4. I'd consider it to be an alternate reality to the game's universe.

It got really good in the later half and was pleasantly surprised at how decent it was. Would watch a sequel for sure.

I don't really care for Uncharted as a game so take my opinion with a grain of salt, but I actually kinda liked the movie. Came in with the lowest of low expectations but had a pretty fun time, I'd go see a sequel if one comes out. Might actually give the games another shot after this.

Well looks like gaf was wrong again lol. I feel vindicated since I was one of the very few who thought this film would be successful.

That was surprisingly better than I was expecting. I thought that Holland and Wahlberg did a decent job and had pretty good chemistry. Some light and jokey dialogue although they didn't really catch the tone of the quips and one-liners from the game. From the trailers I was expecting the movie to be endless set pieces so was happy to see there was a little bit of puzzle solving and tomb raiding although there had been more of that aspect since that's the best part of the games. Movie moves at a really quick pace but solid good fun 6-7/10. Would definitely watch more of those since there is painful lack of treasure hunt movies out there

- This is a gaming forum. Gamers don't like movie adaptations of their favourite games.
- There's a history of bad video game/movie adaptations
- People are idiots to judge something before reviews are even out <<< I really don't get this mentality nowadays. Its fucking baffling.
- Rabid fanboyism also adds to the above

Don't pay attention to video game forums. Go see it for yourself.

Going by the general consensus before this movie was out, it was nailed on as a dumpster fire. Seen it in cinema and don't regret it one bit. In fact I've watched it again just last night.

I don't like the movie because it's just strings of CGI action scenes. I was bored and the absurdity of the finale and the characters in general was ridiculous. As a 12 year old I would have had fun in the cinema, but as a >30 year old I would not. When the first Uncharted game released on the PS3 I was 17 and the series has grown with time and fanbase. I don't know who this movie was made for as it's a garbage kids movie and doesn't take the early fans seriously.
Against Uncharted, the Rocks' Jumanji was Tenet

I personally thought that it was going to be way more set pieces and action, so the fact that it actually had a bit of treasure hunting in it was a very welcome surprise

You say that as if Tenet was some masterpiece. :messenger_tears_of_joy:

I don't even have the courage to watch this, if there is something I learned in my life is to never bother with adaptations of things you like.

The Fan movie was better and felt like Uncharted, this movie wasn't great and quite bare bones, 4/10.
The fan movie looks like cheap television. You can tell it was shot cameras that the average Joe can afford (if they saved up for one). It simply does not have the polish that Hollywood movies have, even the turds.

Can't watch it. Similar to every movie that put that fake ass 9 dashed line that the CCP likes to put in movies to spread propaganda.

It is ok but there are some really dumb things in it. The final action sequence is super dumb.

I torrented this file for free and I feel like I still paid too much. Tom Holland sucks and the media infatuation with him is baffling.

Yeah this wasn't great.
I wasn't too bored because I still have a soft spot for generic treasure hunter movies, but this wasn't as good as National Treasure or The DaVinci code.

I still don't get the point of changing the characters and story so much. The world of Uncharted is nothing special, there's not deep lore or anything like that to set it apart. So the characters and stories ARE the franchise, and if you change them to this extent you are basically just doing Uncharted in name alone.

The VFX were pretty poor too. This had some of the most obvious green screen backgrounds I've seen in a while
