Unconfirmed: Xbox 360 to get external Blu-ray disc drive

Wouldnt this be pretty gimped? No HDMI 1.3 for example?
I already have the best BD player (PS3), so I welcome my new brothers!

Absolutely, nigh on unwatchable.

You made the correct purchase.

Hard to play games without a disc.

The one I had turned into a hairdryer with the disc. ANd without it was audible, like a soft computer.

This thread isn't about playing games. With an external Blu-ray drive, there would be no disc in the main system to spin.

I'm interested. I have a desire for a Blu-ray player and don't want to buy a PS3 or a standalone player for various reasons including:

1. Cost
2. Limited inputs into my TV and Receiver which are in use by my digital cable and 360

I sold my 360 a couple months ago on gaf with all my games, because I needed a quick downpayment on something, and could not wait till my paycheck got here.

I was debating on if I should get a PS3 or now, but ended up ordering a 360 pro last night. The only thing outside of LBP that made me want the PS3, was Blu Ray. If this is true, I am it looks like I am skipping Sony for another year or so.

I would find it hard to believe that a 2009 BD model (which we dont even know the specs of yet) would be inferior to an early 2006 one.
Newer isn't always better due to cost-cutting to reach a certain price point. The biggest problem as I mentioned before is loading speeds.

MS should release a combo along with this. Something like the Xbox 360 Media Bundle.

Something like a Blu-Ray Drive, 120gb hard-drive, and a game/movie for 300 or less.

Its SUPPOSED to be. But in my case, nope. My 360 is rather quiet and my PS3 is loud as fuck. And its not a dust issue or anything like that. My units are well ventilated, and I dust them frequently, and run the fan tests. My PS3 gets loud as hell after being on for about 10 minutes and the fans kick in. Has been that way since the start.

Thats normal for 60GB PAL (or 80GB NTSC) models based on the original 90nm chipset. It's always 10 minutes for me as well; usually only on hot days. To its defence, i'd say it's more of a clean "whoosh" sound than a the mechanical "nnnnggg" drone the 360 makes, if you get my onomatopoeia. To me, it's about as loud, but the frequency is less intrusive when you're playing DVDs.

Regarding the topic, if Microsoft can do something to damage the PS3s sales, they will. I think a Blu-Ray add-on fits into that catagory: even if they sell it at a loss, it'll work to their favour when it comes to generating a larger install base.

We are talking about the external BD-Drive rigth¿?

If the external drive is quiet and you got a new 360 it should be as quieter as a ps3. On the other hand if you have a load one, you are fucked. But the 360 is now for 180€ so...It's not too much :)

And if Xbox 360 does get an external Blu ray drive for movies, so what, how is that exciting?
Means nothing for gaming.

It's exciting for the people who want to enjoy Blu ray, and not buy a PS3 to get a good, affordable player.

I am pretty sure 360 already has gaming in the bag.

Welcome to 2007?

Seriously though if true would make me quite happy(if it was in the $100 range). I want a BluRay player but pretty much accepted the fact that I will not be getting a PS3 when I purchased my 2nd XBox 360 (Arcade with VP2 and a $70 credit) for $199 to use as a media extender. I really want a PS3 for LBP but I just couldn't justify the extra $200+ (taxes, better cable,ect..).

Of course I should probably update my TV first, I have a 57" projection (Hitachi), I bought the HD-DVD addon when it was $50and really didn't see all that much of a difference (or my eyes really suck)

Blu-Ray and Digital Downloads can co-exist.

Sure they can.

But more publicity/sales/adoption of Blu-Ray means more PS3 sales and more money for Sony.

MS has been consistently downplaying Blu-Ray this gen, instead promoting digital distribution as the next step. They even went as far as instigating a format war to try and kill it.

Suddenly offering a BD drive and implementing a JVM in the 360 seems too farfetched to me.

This sounds like FUD to me.

Plus if the cost of the 360 + cost of Blu-Ray drive isn't less than the PS3 they shouldn't bother.

How can they afford that?

*shrugs*

MS doesn't mind selling certain games on the cheap/free. Look at Forza 2 and Viva Pinata. The harddrive is certainly not all that expensive and they are basically just ripping people off with its current price point. At 300 or less they could potentially sell the blu-ray for what its actually worth, slightly lower the 120gb price and eat some losses on some older game that has slowed in sales.

It'd probably entice people to get the package more than buying both as standalone products.

If this happens, then Sony is fucked for the holidays.

:lol

Yeah, I'm sure Sony would really hate to see more people get access to the Blu Ray format so they can make more money off it. Yeah...

Wow, I was just thinking about this walking to lunch yesterday. With Criterion jumping in, I'd love to adopt Blu-Ray sooner rather than later, especially considering their truly landmark, revolutionary replacement plan and pricing scenario. My greatest hope was a 360 add-on and I figured $200 would be a pretty reasonable price. $100 to $150 is simply phenomenal. Please do it, MS, before Criterion announces a Kicking & Screaming Blu Ray.

HI DEF MAX & GROVER PLZ.

its useless if its only for movies

if microsoft publishes anything that require an add-on, it will divide the market and ranks high as a FAIL.

so this addon, if happen, will be only for movies, as the HD-DVD one was.

for me, a bluray addon "only for movies" on 360 is correct, and can be interested for HDmovie enthusiasts which already have 360 and not have PS3.

cheers.

Not in Canuck land : (

I'm working on the wife, I can trade my seldom used Wii and accessories for the equivilant of a PS3 and game and EBGames. But she's guilting the crap out of me that my 2 and 4 year olds will eventually use the system and it is more kid friendly

pretty much this

Great news if true, the more exposure for the format, the better.

Mines actually a 40GB NTSC model.
If your X360 is quieter than 40GB PS3, that PS3 is busted in some way and is probably struggling for it's life, I'm pretty sure about that. I'm considering replacing my 60GB for a 40GB becuase it's basically dead silent in comparison

A little off topic but can the 360s HD DVD drive be used as a cheap external DVD drive?
I do believe so...

Back on topic

I would so daisy chain a BlueRay drive to my HDDVD Drive...

Do it Microsoft! Save me money this xmas!

I'd love to see this happen just for the sake of blu ray. Every little bit helps.
Blu Ray is not Africa.

Dead Silent? Yeah maybe for the first 10 minutes.

Again, mine IS dead silent - for all of 10-20 minutes. Then the fans kick in and I can barely hear myself think.

It is dead silent compared to 60GB (and also any X360 I've ever seen), but not 100% dead silent. There's a big difference in the amount of fan noise made by 60GB and 40GB, regardless of how long you keep them on. I'm actually considering getting new 80GB which has even lower power consumption due to both chips being 65nm.

No HD audio is pretty bad, yeah. Unless they fixed the 1.3 issue? The system has gone through so many revisions I lost count.
