Underappreciated and overlooked GBA games

Stop it.

Tactics Ogre Knight of Lodis is garbage. Complete trash. Utterly the worst SPRG I've ever played. Stop recommending it and play a real game ~_~

Hahahahaah *wipes tears of laughter*

I'll still stand behind it. :) Best puzzle game on the system that nobody's heard about, IMO. Funny cutscenes, and you'll probably be playing it for years before you finish it... *if* you can finish it. I don't know anyone (personally) who has, although I'm sure they exist.
I'll third it, and I've finished it. Every one of the 335 stages. It took me a few months to complete. No stage stumped me for more than a few days, but man were those days torturous. The mini-game at the professor's hut is a great bonus for completing it.

Honestly, you're not really worth replying to, but if anyone is really considering Tactics Ogre GBA, please check out this thread:

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=24664

I'm not the only one criticizing the game.

I also don't care if it's better than FFTA or not. That's like asking whether vomit or diarrhea tastes better. The only SRPG on the GBA worth playing is Fire Emblem.

Nah, twas your hating that didn't merit a serious response. Honestly, you apparently haven't played truly awful SRPGs, such as Onimusha Tactics, Stella Deus, anything Nippon Ichi, etc. :D

It is. It's got some changes over the first TO. Some good, some bad, but it's by no means a trainwreck, and far from the worst anything.

good topic. im sure there are a good bunch that we are overlooking too. the GBA library is massive!

where'd you guys pick up a copy of MOH: Infiltrator at (for a good price)? i need a new good GBA game.

and has anyone played THIS:

urban.jpg

???

ive allways wanted to try this game. i need to just go ahead and buy it one day.

Urban Yeti is awesome.

I LOVED this game:

It's a side-scrolling platformer. Think Soccer Kid on the Amiga, but much easier to control, lovely graphics are really well designed levels. Great music too.

Some awesome (imo) GBA games people may not have tried...

Broken Sword - The Shadow of the Templars
Fire Pro Wrestling 2
Medal Of Honor - Infiltrator
Racing Gears Advance
Great game. Although you have to really like wrestling to enjoy it. I stopped liking wrestling a few years ago and now all the firepro and koc games are less enjoyable. Best gameplay and most depth in a wrestling game.

unfortunately, you listed even more abominable crap like Final Fantasy Tactics Advance
I think I liked FFTA at the time of playing it but not loved. I liked it as in 6/10 or maybe 7/10. I recall no challenge or real purpose, it was just a guided tour of slaughtering the AI.

Super ghouls and ghosts anf gogo beckham on my search list!

I got Golden Sun after reading something on here, I don't like it, so don't recommend crap like that. I want to build up a platform library, any suggestions?

i only liked the visuals and the music. for a handheld game at the time, it was pretty nice. everything else, ouch...

Invader

--Vertical shoot'em up

--8 weapons, big bosses, pretty intense action

Underappreciated and overlooked, by gamers and by the company that published it. Xicat was supposed to publish the game in the U.S., but never did. They did publish it in the UK, after a very lengthy delay. I believe it was called Kaisertal in Japan.

It sounds like a game I'd really enjoy, but after looking around its not available anywhere for purchase....not even ebay. They must have made about 50 copies of the game :lol

Looks pretty cool, kinda reminds me of a GBA sequel to Solar Striker...

Sweet! This thread is getting back on track.

Another title I'll recommend after picking it up on the cheap: Muppet Pinball Mayhem

It really is a semi-realistic game of pinball, like Last Gladiators, or Necronomicon. Not quite as fantasy-ish as Metroid Pinball, or Devil's Crush. Which reminds me, I'll be getting Typing of the Dead soon, I'll let y'all know how that is too! :D

Yeah, Muppet Pinball was surprisingly good. Hard as hell to find a copy of it, though.

Invader looks interesting...Import only eh? I'll have to look into that.

Can somebody, out of the kindness of their heart, list some good side-scrolling shooters for the GBA? I know about Iridion II and Gradius Galaxies. And the abysmal Rtype III...

Dawg, most of the games posted here are going to be hard to find. I see Iridion 3D all the time, but rarely see Iridion 2. It took me a month or so to find Medal of Honor: Infiltrator. I let a friend of mine borrow Gunstar Super Heroes, and he lost it. I now hafta track that down on ebay, because I don't see it in B&M stores. Ninja 5-0? Yeah right....

As for side-scrolling, what about games like CT Special Forces, or Metal Slug Advance? Lilo & Stitch has some side scrolling levels in the game that are very Metal Slug-ish. I don't know of too many space-shooter games for the Gameboy Advance - I just found out about Gradius Galaxies recently. :(

Also, is Lady Sia any good? I get mixed reviews, and I actually saw one at my local Gamestop...

Just because I avoid the truly horrible games doesn't negate the fact that TO:KoL is the worst one I've had the displeasure of playing.

But I'll ask one simple question: What good is a SRPG that lacks any kind of strategy?

*mind blown*

That's the biggest wave of nostalgia I've ever had. I feel a little sick. I had TOTALLY forgotten about Solar Striker. Man I used to love that game...

I already explained it in the other thread!!!!!

The stupid game:

1. Has easy scenarios. There was perhaps one battle of 40 or however many stages that required some thought. But in all cases, the enemies died pretty easily and did not do all that much damage back. To top it off, the AI was ridiculously stupid. It was hard to die.

2. Has very simplistic gameplay. There are less factors to consider in TO:KoL than any other SRPG I've played. For instance, TO:LUCT has the WT system which I found brilliant. The WT bar counts down and when it hits 0, it's your char's turn. But, depending on what actions you take this turn, you can influence how high your WT bar is for your next turn. So if you only attacked this turn, you would get your next turn faster than if you had attacked & moved. So it made you weigh your options all the more.

The only "strategy" in TO:KoL is to surround and pound, which is not much of a strategy at all. It's just the nature of SRPGs in the first place. All you can do in the game is move, attack, use items and cast spells. There's no depth beyond that.

3. Is even more dull because each "team" has its own turn, making it much more easy for you to surround and pound. You can move all your units on your turn, so it's incredibly easy for the player to slaughter the enemy. In theory, it should also be easy for the enemy to surround and slaughter your forces on their turn. But again, the stupid AI makes it so they balance their damage, so it's harder for you to die.

I really dislike the whole "team turns" thing in the first place. It undos everything RPGs have built on for the last 10 years. It doesn't matter what your stats are, or how many levels you progress. Your character's turn won't ever come up any faster.

4. The whole concept of "emblems" is a joke, because without an outside source like an FAQ, you'll never know how to obtain them in game. They become random bonuses with invisible requirements you never know how to meet. Considering that some classes require certain emblems for you to change to them, it's an even more ridiculous concept.

Why bother with KoL, when you could be playing Let Us Cling Together, FFT, or a host of other better SRPGs?

I really like Metal Slug Advance. It's colorful, fast-paced, and generally faithful to the arcade style... although there aren't nearly as many objects onscreen. Supposedly Metal Slug 1 is coming to GBA, although with SNKP's track record it may not ship until 2015.

CT Special Forces is a decent Metal Slug knock-off... a little more Contra-ish in spots. I'd skip the first and get 2 or 3 though. There's just so much more to do.

Are imports fair to post? You think that these domestic titles are hard to find? MAN! If the import game is more than a year or two old, forget it. You're not going to find it unless you live in japan... :(

Yes, but would you be able to give detailed reasons? I mean, nothing big, just a page or two. please use complete sentences, and list any sources you might quote from. :D

Just pullin' your chain, mang.

Me too man, at the time I had a lot of fun with it, being the SHMUPS fan I am I used to love playing it during study hall in high school along with Alleyway. :)

We need some kick ass horizontal scrolling shooters on the DS as horizontal screen vertical shooters IMO don't work (Nanostray, Mars Matrix ::gag::).

MOH: Infiltrator was easily the coolest find yet for me from one of these little known GBA gem threads. Nice to see for once a game designed from the ground up to fit and WORK within the confines of the system's technology instead of being shoehorned into it half assed for a change.

The only SRPG this generation worth playing is Fire Emblem.
Fix'd. SRPGs have been majorly sucking on all platforms this gen, not just GBA. Fire Emblem's the only thing worth touching on any machine.

TO on the GBA was dumbed down, yes, but there was still a lot to dig into. It wasn't particularly tough, but the scenarios were fun and engaging. I loved customizing my characters, earning emblems, and opening up new classes. There was plenty of customization, and more than enough scenarios and stories to give you wiggle room to play with.

As for another example of a fun SRPG that lacks strategy? The Shining Force series is perhaps the greatest example. Truly some of the stupidest SRPGs ever, but g-damnit if they weren't fun!

There is also Turok: Evolution. The game is rather difficult (and uses a password save) but is a decent action game that has taken a lot of it's insperation from Metal Slug and Nam-1975. Supports two players at the same time to (two carts needed).

I think I want Metal of Honor: Infiltrator...I'm looking for some old-school Metal Gear Solid GBC stealth action on my Lite. Will it deliver?

TO GBA's AI was horrible. It ruined the game. Sometimes it felt like the AI went out of their way to not kill your people!

That's a death sentence in an SRPG.

Grayman said:

That describes pretty much all GBA SRPGs other than Fire Emblem. Actually it describes quite a few SRPGs for PS1 also (Kartia, Vandal Hearts).

I found a CompUsa near me that had a bunch of new copies of Mario Vs. Donkey Kong yesterday, and I snatched it up. It's a great, fun, charming game. I love it, and am glad I was able to find a copy. It's really hard to find now.

It makes me even more excited for the DS sequel coming soon.

I picked MvDK from the PA sale, and I dunno. The gameplay is darn good, but doesn't live up to its predecessor. The graphics are dislikeable, even more than King of Swing's pastel blandness. The sound is OK. I hate the intro screens that give away the technique you're supposed to use, and I really hate the unskippable "level overview" scroll at the start of each level.

Sort of Soccer Kid meets Super Mario World with David Beckham. While that may not sound like a good game it really is.

This thread has inspired me to pick up a cheap copy of this game (that I previously knew nothing about) - should be here tomorrow :)

Say Hello to this little thread. I yust needed to bump it, sorry.
Tsubaki, of course I disagree with you, it's IMO the best GBA game, period (see avatar) but I don't want to argue with you because I see your points. I was yust wondering if you like final fantasy tactics advance more, and if that's the case, why on earth? The story is bullshit, the game is way too easy, the music is way too repetitive, the law system is way too annoying, the characters are way to boring and the enemies are way too lazy. The only cool thing about it was the special skills - ninja/sharpshooter/... stuff.

Thanks to this thread I checked out CT Special Forces 2/3 and they're pretty cool. I found metal slug advance too difficult but that fastpaced gameplay is not really my cup of tea. question: Wich of the Megaman Zero's are the best? 1/2/3/4?

Everyone ignored Game & Watch gallery 4 GBA:

And Alien Hominid, recently released: (I love the flash game)

Also, where the fck is the best puzzle gba game evah? Lost Vikings on gba!
2522.jpg
lost-vikings-4.jpg

The Lost Vikings is one of my favorite games. Anyone who missed it in the 16-bit days really ought to check it out. Personally, I played it (and its sequel, Norse by Norsewest on PSX) to death already, so I haven't picked up the GBA version.

Alien Hominid is ridiculously hard. I tried playing the GC version and couldn't finish the first level.

Can anyone point me to where I can import online or find this in the US? I've been, uh, evaluating it, and it really is a superior title. My daughter loves it as well.

My personal Sleeper Hits are:

Bookworm - Top 5 Gba release.

ESPN Final Round Golf 2002 - Best golf game on the GBA.

Klonoa 2 - Awesome platformer.

Space Invaders - Simple fun

I came in here to say The Lost Vikings, but the good work has already been done. One of my favorite games of all time and it loses nothing in its GBA conversion.
