Underappreciated Games you have a real soft spot for.

Kingdom of Amalur: Reckoning.

Why doesn't everyone everywhere love it? Please all! You need to love it!

Because it has all the shortcomings of the MMO genre (filler fetch/kill sidequests, boring NPCs, uninteresting character, grinding, OP builds) and none of the things that make the MMO genre shine (player interaction, sense of accomplishment, enjoyable looting), as well as other terrible aspects like a kitchen sink setting that only tries to tick all must have checkboxes for high fantasy with total disregard for trying to build a world that makes sense, weapons/builds that look cool but make the game a terrible experience in the late game, and a story that just drags on and on until it really makes you feel it has overstayed its welcome.

These two were extremely solid Diablo clones. It sucks I could never play 4 payer co-op on them though.

To me these are simply the best loot hoard games ever. I like them more than Diablo. So many fond memories.

Really wish they'd get the HD treatment. Graphically they've aged quite well.

On that note: I think Dungeon Siege 3 was really under-appreciated. Story was admittedly a little dry, and the loot didn't have much variation visually, but I think the combat was great and the writing certainly wasn't bad.

Majin And The Forsaken Kingdom

It was really charming, had decent aesthetics and the boss battles were quite well-designed.

El Shaddai: Ascension of the Metatron

The art-style was incredibly beautiful and really helped to draw me in. The combat was alright, not amazing but it worked. And it had some neat level-designs going for it. The story/characters were...okay, I suppose. But I don't see it talked about much and I feel it has some good things going for it.

I really enjoyed El Shaddai. Was a great game imo

One of the most fun multiplayer games I have played in my life, think I have 500+ hours playtime between the 360 version and PS4 version.

It's like the perfect console MOBA if you ask me, but I always feel it's being ignored by the masses.

Dark Souls 2, though it is only underappreciated if compared to the slightly overrated Dark Souls 1. Hm... A more fitting answer for the OP's question would be Drill Dozer. Fun platformer released for the GBA. It was supposed to become a series, but unfortunately that didn't happen, due to poor sales...

A few that has been mentioned already here like MGSV, Kingdom of Amalur, Champions of Norrah. I would put Radiata Stories for PS2.

Game looked awesome for an 8-bit game!

If I look at the long play video's on YT, I wonder how they hell I was able to finish this game though :D

Rez.

Rez changed what I thought a video game could and should be. Sure, it's short, its 'accessories' are often seen as a joke, but back in 2001 that game blew my 14 year old mind. The way the soundtrack, audio design and graphics just melted into each other to create an experience I'd never thought possible. It created my love for rhythm and music games, it's one of the reasons I adore the Sega Dreamcast and it's still my favourite game ever.

So yeah, Rez.

Too Human
Alpha Protocol
The Crew

Dozens I have forgotten. I love finding games like this, as often got them cheap with no expectations.

Loved this game, completed it multiple times and unlocked everything. It was very misunderstood by reviewers expecting a 3rd person shooter but in reality it was more like an old school 2D shooter where dodging bullets and picking your moment to shoot was king.

Most of the ones I would have said get plenty of love these days, especially on forums like this (Turtles in Time, Chrono Trigger, EarthBound).

I think EA's 6th gen LoTR games aren't really talked about any more, specifically The Two Towers (action game) and The Third Age (RPG). I thought they were well worth playing. They won't make many people's all-time lists, but I also have fond memories of The Simpsons: Road Rage, and the og Game Boy Tiny Toon Adventures.

Loved this game, one of the very few I've played twice. Don't understand the vitriol this game sometimes gets on GAF.

Played the crap out of this, loved every second. Totally underrated. The art style is superb and the sound design is awesome. Yeah, it was buggy in places, but I can overlook that. Great game.

Anarchy Reigns
It has a truly incredible soundtrack and it is extremely satisfying to play.

Dragon's Dogma Dark Arisen
The Butterblack Isle content is the perfect meld of Demon's Souls and exciting combat and nothing has come close to its excitement.

Microsoft better make Rez HD backwards compatible.

God Hand.

Not only is it hard to find people who played it, but even the ones who like it never actually played the game for long...

Game is competing for the position of best action game of all time for me, and I feel the only reason I don't say that yet is because I'm a DMC fanboy =X

Freedom Fighters.

Simple and intuitive squad commands, along with multilayered levels that gave the player a great amount of choice in their approach to each zone. In terms of design it felt years ahead of similar games at the time.

I had no idea olliolli2 was available on steam, thought it was a ps4 indie for some reason, I'll have to check it out.

I bought strider too but felt it was all just a bit simple and gave up early on. Maybe I'll give it another shot.

Wow, someone at Namco really liked the KOTOR cover or something..

More likely they really liked the Star Wars movie posters that KotOR's cover was based on.

Yeah, I was just gonna say. More like any of the well known Drew Struzan posters!

LEGO Racers. One of THE games of my childhood, along with things like let's say THPS2. Was not only a pretty nice racer, but also allows you to build your car out of Legos. How cool is that? With especially their recent output it's hard to believe that High Voltage Software could make something good, but they did.
And yes, played it recently and still had fun.

Gruntz. One of Monolith Productions' earlier efforts and a nice combination of RTS and a puzzler. Another one of the games I loved as a kid. You controlled a few of those strange goo creatures called Gruntz and your objective was to find pieces of a magic stone, carry them to your king and help them return to their times after jumping in time via a magic portal while being chased by another, evil Gruntz tribe. Of course, some of the evil Gruntz travelled with you and you had to fight them, classic RTS style.

this game kicked my ass several times over. the attacks were fun. the soundtrack was pretty damn awesome, and the art style was pretty awesome as well.

You were robbed XIII, robbed!
XIII was the adaption of a belgian spy comic set in the USA, where you play a former agent with amnesia unrevealing a conspiracy he was part of, but can't remember (and that wants to kill him of). Incredibly fun and intruiging and with a huge cliffhanger. >_<

I really loved Rifts on Nokia N-Gage:

zMUrbpm.jpg

Intriguing world with both magic and technology and great turn based combat, the only crpg ever made from the Rifts franchise. Too bad almost nobody has played this, as it is only playable on original hardware.

There are many, but I'll pick a couple of relatively recent ones:

Bulletstorm

It wasn't exactly hated, but most of the attention it got was due to the juvinile humor it has... and even that humor, I felt, was being presented as worse than it was. It was very self aware.

As for the gameplay, I think this is one of the very best shooters ever made. The controls are spot on, the leash mechanic is awesome, and the action is just all around solid. Such a joy to play, and the mechanics leave lots of room for personal improvement, kind of like Dishonored for example.

The Tropico series

It's a big shame in my book that this series as a whole has gotten maybe 10% of the attention that SimCity alone got for sucking. Tropico 4/5 are the best city simulators I've played, full stop. The citizens are actual, simulated individuals. The social and economical simulations are relatively believeable. Unlike other builders, the game actually has character. The campaign sets clear goals, but is open ended about how you wish to approached achieving them. There's a sense of progress and structure that I sorely miss in most builders.

The Fear Effect games. Both are fantastic, but especially the first one. It's a mix of neo-noir, crime and mystical horror.
They're really disturbing games still to this day.

And I doubt I am, but it always feels like I'm the only one who remembers that these games exist and that they're really good. I wish they were on PSN so I could recommend them.

Dude you sure are not ! I play this game every year. It never gets old.
It also had some pretty good VA (at least in french) for its time. So many memorable sequences. Man this game is so good !

Folkore - love the aesthetic and setting. Sixxaxis controls actually fun to use and fit game and the music and sense of "other worldliness" was superb.

Dark Void - Jetpack. Bermuda Triangle. Indiana Jones vibe. Lost tribes. Technologically advanced baddies. What's not to like? Well, the somewhat mediocre shooting and gameplay but love the pitch perfect pulp plot and setting and there are a number of good levels with the jetpack. If they'd really nailed the gameplay it could have been a classic IMO. But they didn't hence it's perfect for this list.
