Underappreciated Games you have a real soft spot for.

Enslaved: Odyssey to the West.

The clunky combat turned a lot of people off to it, but once you get past that you discover that Ninja Theory's 2010 game has a surprising amount of heart. Written by the screenwriter of the movie Ex Machina, Enslaved feels very much like The Last of Us, a tight personal story involving two unlikely companions traveling across a post apocalyptic America. But instead of zombies, there are robots.

Brave Fencer Musashi. I played this game like crazy ass a kid. Was never able to beat it.

There's a small group here that likes Breath of Fire 3 but I've even read people referring to the series as C-tier. Most seem unaware of how great 3 & 4 are.

Breath of Fire 3 is one of my favorite JRPGs of all time. Proably one of the most charming adventures I've been on in gaming. Sitting by the campfire with my team and chatting about whats going on in the story was nice. And it really does feel like much ground was traversed during the journey and the place you finally end up was rather shocking in, as was the antagonist's motives. And that lovely jazzy soundtrack brings back all kinds of fond memories.

Yes op, way of samurai series need more love. It offer some of the best branching story mechanic. Not by choice ala mass effect, but by action. See a girl getting harassed? Ignore or rescue her. Son't want to get involved in any of the fight. Just do whatever the hell you want until the game force you to an ending or you can decide to get the hell away from it all.

Zettai zersumei toshi series (aka disaster report and raw danger) a game about surviving natural disaster. Game is a janky but i'm surprised with some fine small detail like the ability to give drink to your npc friend or using umbrella during rain. 2nd one aka raw danger offer great scenario one character action can change other character scenario. Hilarious dialogue choices.

Both Addams Family games for the snes. Noone ever remembers them when there's talk about the 16bit glory days of sidescrollers, but they were two extraordinary platformers.

I'll go with Landstalker on Megadrive/Genesis released in 92/93 by Sega,I never see it pop up in people favourite RPG lists. It was an isometric RPG with tons of charm and looked nice to.One of my gaming soft spots, good ole Landstalker.

Pretty much everything in the SaGa series (except maybe Unlimited). Never felt like the games got a fair shake in the West with people dismissing the non-linearity as a "lack of story".

I'll also toss in Ring of Red since it's a criminally overlooked strategy game.

Littlebigplanet 2. Although it was critically acclaimed, I feel it did not get the popularity it deserved.

One of the best games for local mp, couch fun on playstation, almost like a Mario party equivalent.

A story that is kinda nonsensical but sort of cute, and does kinda try to give a message to the player, and most of all - it was a huge step above LBP1 on all fronts.

And as an avid LBP fan, I was extremely underwhelmed with LBP3.

Hell, I think I'd have rather had a LBP2 remastered and then waited however long for MM themselves to give a true LBP sequel.

Def Jam: Fight For NY

Mostly went ignored for being some Licensed game with rappers, but holy shit, it's one of the most complete packages you can get on the Ps2/XBOX/GC generation.

The game included the following features:

-Achievements: before they were even a thing, the game would award you wit in game trophies for completing specific milestones and challenges like breezing thru the first act in a certain time, developing your character past certain point and clearing one time events.
-Innovative Difficulty system: You could change the difficulty setting at any point in your home base, the catch? Playing in lower dificulties awarded you less money/development points, if you played the game entirely in easy mode you wouldn't be able to max out your character, however, playing in harder dificulty meant you were risking losing one time events or not getting time sensitive achievements, so you had to think carefully about changing the difficulty setting and thus, playing harder was more rewarding.
-Tons of customization: There was ridiculous amount of clothes, accessories, tattoos, hairstyles, moves and styles you could use to customize your character, and outfits were not just for show, a cool outfit would actually affect your charisma stat, and higher charisma meant charging your super meter faster to unleash any of the hundreds of cool looking super moves.
-Everyone is playable: Save for the low poly generic audience memberse, absolutely every model you see in the game is playable! Every single player opponet? Playable! Those 3 cops that show up only for the intro cinema? They're all playable! The shop owners? Playable! The girls that are only there to be your potential girlfriend for plot reasons? PLAYABLE! That shadowed guy you only see his foot for a second before creating your character? HE HAS THE BEST BASE STATS IN THE GAME! And in addition to that, if you saw a character in an alternate outfit in the game, you can unlock those outfits too.
-Stage hazards and gimmicks: This game is a fighting/wrestling hybrid, but all stages have hazards and weapons you can use, plus since these are "street fights" you can get the audience involved to help you beat your oponent. More than that, there are gimmick stages to when you can win by using the enviroment, one stage takes place in a subway, so you can win by having the train kill your oponent, other stages have similarly lethal gimmicks, but that's not all, there i one stage where you can win by ring out and another that takes place in a parking lot with your car and your opponent's where you can win by totalling your opponent's car (by slaming your opponent repeatly into it).
-Decent Story mode with tones of celebrities: basically what it says on the tin, the story basically it's like a war between two pimps, but instead of whores they manage street fighters and arrange fights between them in private venues, it's kinda silly, but it's amazingly good when you realize this is a game about rappers beating each other. Having the Def Jam license, you can bet your ass all artists on the label appear as themselves here, but they also threw in a few other celebirties like Danny Trejo, Carmen Electra and Henry Rollins.

Basically this game has all the qualities of an AAA Release, but i feel nobody ever acknowledges it.

I love this game to death and i don't even remember some of the stuff you listed here haha

One thing i really liked about this game is that every character has a their own unique crazy ass special move and you could equip your character with 4 special moves from other characters once you unlocked them. It was just marvelous.

The story was so contrived but it worked. You basically fought with the "good" side of def jam for the beginning of the game taking over the underground fight clubs (meth, red, luda, etc) against crow (Snoop Dogg) and the "bad" side of def jam (Fat joe, busta rhymes, etc) until about halfway through when snoop kidnaps your girl and makes you fight for him. I remember the cutscene when you walk into the club when you first start fighting for snoop and you walk past all your old buddies all they're all shocked and shaking their head and meth has this like super disappointed look since he's like your ultimate right hand man the entire game. I remember feeling like a piece of shit when that happened. I was emotionally invested in a game about rapper fighting each other in an underground fighting circuit. IIRC, there was a point where crow had you jump meth and beat him or something. It was heartbreaking lol

This game was amazing lol

I actually much prefer Enslaved to Last of Us.

Every time a thread like this comes up I mention the same game and that's not gonna change

I played the hell out of this game at a resort my family used to go to over the summer and it still bums me out so many people don't know about it

It's like a mix of Metal Slug and Ikari Warriors and it's SUPER GOOD. Lots of neat things like three branching mission paths, different characters with different weapons, and the ability to switch between characters on the fly. Also really nice animation and sprite work.

Heavenly Sword - Fucking loved the characters in this game.

Conan - Awesome character action game with a lot of really great flavor.

Asura's Wrath - Anime: The Game.

Alundra. It's kind of funny actually, I played the game when I was a kid but never got far and wasn't one of the titles that I concidered PS1 classics. In 2013 we had the monthly community playthrough threads of PS1 classics on GAF and I returned to the title with an open mind. Not only is it easily one of the best Zelda games ever made (best 2D ones for me, perhaps tied with Twilight Princess for me), I now regard it as one of the absolute best PS1 games of all time.

Man, I cannot imagine if the shitty forced 3D push had affected this game. The sprite art is gorgeous. You very rarely hear about the game and if I went just with my first impression as a kid I wouldn't have realized how great it is. It's probably my number 2 game I am thankful GAF got me to play behind Persona 4.

You guys should check out each other's games. Alundra is a spiritual sequel to Landstalker.

Western RPGs in the 80s and early 90's, before games like Fallout and Diablo, which everyone loves to talk about. Series like Ultima, Wizardry and Might & Magic(sans Heroes) were loooong running series that essentially disappeared(Might and Magic got a sequel from Ubi).

Without Ultima, we wouldn't have (less in-depth) morality systems.
Without Wizardry, we wouldn't have the (simplified) menu-driven battle systems of JRPGs.

Yay another fan of Space Rangers! What an awesome game it is.

Many good picks already (Vexx, Sphinx. Fur Fighters, Croc).
Would like to add as always in these kind of threads. Two of my favorite gems.

Was about to post Metal Arms but you too care of business. That game was so damn good!

Perfect Dark (N64, best fucking shooter ever)
Deus Ex (any of them are better than most games that came out at the same time)

few more... but these are the ones I feel SHOULD have a way bigger following and hype surrounding them.

one ISN'T goldeneye, the other just cant take off, it just has its hardcore fans and new ones jumping on because of the latest iteration that was my 2011 GOTY

You know what, I agree completely on a LBP2 remaster instead of the LBP3 we got. I feel the "soul" that LBP1 and 2 had was gone from LBP3.

Flawed but I love it.

I'll be honest, I don't get the cult around this game. I like Obsidian, I like KOTOR 2, I like New Vegas but this game... eh. Gameplay is straight up terrible, the characters/story are so odd and cheesy which makes it hard to care for a dialog driven game.... i dunno

Maybe not in the GAF context (it's well appreciated here, right?), but definitely Nier is one that -- in general -- nobody knows about, lots of reviewers dumped on it, and yet somehow miraculously, we're getting a Platinum-developed sequel.

Please don't wake me from this dream. :)

It gets made fun of so much.

Knack. Legitimately one of the best experiences I've had this gen, playing through the game in co-op alongside a friend on hard difficulty.

I think the co-op mode + hard difficulty gets rid of a lot of the common critiques of the game that people had (and I probably would've had). But yeah, I don't blame people for not liking it. A game should be fun in its default mode when played alone, and this game wasn't for most people.

I wish it caught on a lot more. I know Beast's Fury has the same premise, but I really liked Bloody Roar when it hit the Gamecube. Shame that it got overshadowed by other fighters.

Xion was my main, but I also liked Cronos and
Uranus

Anyone who remembers this had a great childhood one of my favorite PS2 games ever. The controls were intuitive for its time destructible environments a crazy amount of mechs to play with a twist. You're outside the mech the whole time so you have to be careful not to get caught up in the huge fights or targeted by your opponent, while also keep a good angle to see the fight from the vantage point you decide on. Story is super generic anime story but it serves it's purpose. The split screen while lan hacking your buddies location to kill him with your mech is priceless every time.

I remember loving this game.

It had Hugh Jackman on the cover, but Mark Hamill voiced Wolverine, and the character designs were based on the comics. You could use Wolverine's senses which sort of acted like infa red vision, and you could also do special kills. I remember the stealth kills being really satisfying.

Shinobi_(PS2)_Coverart.png

this game kicked my ass several times over. the attacks were fun. the soundtrack was pretty damn awesome, and the art style was pretty awesome as well.

My man! The game was amazing. Graphics weren't great for a ps2 game, but they looked nice. Plot was simple but worked. Very unique for it's time. It kicked my ads to, though it didn't help I didn't learn there was a lock on until my second playthrough... Ana didn't know there was a charge attack until the sequel. Finding out hotsuma was in project xzone 2 made that game a must buy.

One of my favorites from last gen was Warhammer 40k space marine.

340

For a 40k game, not a lot of people know about it sine it came just as THQ was dying and came out with no marketing whatsoever.

The environments were huge and really captured the feeling of the massive scale of the 40k verse. The gameplay was the same, softening up the enemies with the bolted before wading in for the kill. You really felt like a super armored super soldier, but there was still challenge to it.

The online multiplayer was one of my favorites from last gen. So good. I bought it for pc again rd gently just to play it.

It had it's.flaws, it really did, but this could have become something huge if it weren't for the publisher going bankrupt. Sega bought relic, but unfortunately they only s wen to want to continue the Dawn of war style games.

Yes! Give us more factions in a sequel.

Bard's_Tale_Box_Cover.jpg

My first CRPG back in the day. I have fond memories of dying until I had to take my time with it.

and
Crystalisboxart.jpg

These have a soft spot with me. I played these before I played Zelda.

Superpunchoutbox.jpg

Not that the series itself is unappreciated but it's definitely overshadowed by the NES title everyone played and its stellar rebirth on Wii. I always thought this one had the superior gameplay to the original. I'm also a big fan of many of the boxers and was saddened to see only Bear Hugger made the jump from Super to the Wii Punch-Out!!

Shadowrun for Xbox 360. An incredibly fun and balanced multiplayer game that really promoted team play. With a proper price, marketing campaign and some additional features it really could have taken off and even been part of the e-sports scene.

Drakengard 1 is an existential boundary pushing videogame.

Yoko Taro joked earlier this year that he should make a game in which nothing happens because that would be an interesting thing to do...

But he already made a game where you actually aren't supposed to have fun back in 2003.

Donkey Kong 64

My mind was blown when I first found out it was so despised on GAF. Yeah, it's a bit of a collectathon but I had so much fun doing it and I thought it brought a lot to the table that we hadn't seen in previous platformers like Banjo and Mario.

Marchenmaze_arcadeflyer.png

Marchen Maze - a really fun isometric platformer arcade game with an Alice in Wonderland esque theme. It's got elements of sumo... enemies and their attacks don't damage you, rather they knock you around, occasionally into a bottomless pit.
