Underappreciated Games you have a real soft spot for.

Don't worry, Splinter Cell.
I still love you.

What a hit. I had Pugsley's Scavenger Hunt when I was a kid. Could never beat it. I don't remember it having a save option. I remember a bathroom level. And dorm rooms being locked. This game was tough. Was it a one-sitting completion?

I love the bathroom level, like the rest of the game it has great music!

Yeah it's definitely really tough, I've never actually managed to beat it. It's a one sitter, once you get good enough it doesn't take too long to get to the last level, but man, that last level... there are so many parts to it, all which are really hard, I just can't get through it all. One day though, one day I'll manage it.

Most fun racing game I've played. Great designed levels, and really feels like a jet ski in water as you can bob the craft up and down, glide and dig in and jump without any ramps. Game is just chill and fun but has a fair amount of skill that can be applied. The music raises it to another level.

Gears of War Judgment.

I think I've played through it four times this year.

It has your normal gears gameplay that I love, but with much much better controls. The friendly AI also seems less umm... slow (Sorry Dom, you suck at everything).

Whyyyyyy, why do you always kick me when I'm.....hiiggghhhhh.

Best soundtrack for any racing game ever created.

Ugly game but powerful gameplay strictly built for hardcore gamers.
Tons of things to unlock if you like merciless challenges.

... and Devil's Third for Wii U, which is already a forgotten rough gem.
Yes, including its flawed but over-the-top and fun solo campaign.

I love this game so much. It has such great atmosphere and just feels so unique, it's an awesome game to play through. One of my favorite ps3 games of all time.

I still need to get to the copy of Folklore I bought at launch. It looked really good then and I've heard a lot of good things.

This game as far better than it really had any business being considering the fall from grace the driver series has gone through.

The shift mechanic that let you jump from car to car was really novel and really
fun.

Agreed. Driver: San Francisco was a lot of fun.

(searches thread for "Bully")

Well this just confirms that it is underappreciated. Always loved the story, the environment, the characters in this Rockstar gem. I'll be first in line if they ever announce a sequel.

How'd I forget Bully? What an amazing game.

If the gameplay was just a tiny bit more refined, it would be in my top 5 games on Wii and hell it may already be.

So underrated.

Fantasy Life on 3DS for me. Has my favourite things from Animal Crossing combined with some of the stuff I love about FFXIV and has level 5 charm. My most played game on 3DS. Also Uematsu's OST helps a fair bit. I need to max out all the lives when I have time.

I absolutely loved that game. For all of its simplicity, it really was a great RPG. The housing decor-system was so charming, and the crafting mini games were not too bad.

Manhunt. Back in the day it conjured up a shitstorm because of its violence, but underneath all that gore is one of the most intense stealth games. That was always overshadows by the "controversy" and stigma that left behind.

Don't worry, Splinter Cell.
I still love you.

Such a great game, even though Sam Fisher's character ceased to exist as we knew him. First rate gameplay though

Marlow Briggs and the Mask of Death. Fun game with decent mechanics, often drops to under £1 during Steam sales, but nobody seems to know about it.

While appreciated widely by the gaming community, I felt Wolfenstein: The New Order went way over the gaming media's head.

Seeing them lap up Far Cry 4 and ignore Wolfenstein was painful.

Marlow Briggs and the Mask of Death. Fun game with decent mechanics, often drops to under £1 during Steam sales, but nobody seems to know about it.

A lot of people I know know about it. Plus TBFs helped get it even more exposure in their brief (like half hour?) video on it.

Witcher 1. While most people *especially on GAF* thinks its a shit game, I adore it a lot for daring to tackle narrative themes that most developers wouldn't dare to do so

The Fear Effect games. Both are fantastic, but especially the first one. It's a mix of neo-noir, crime and mystical horror.
They're really disturbing games still to this day.

And I doubt I am, but it always feels like I'm the only one who remembers that these games exist and that they're really good. I wish they were on PSN so I could recommend them.

I really enjoyed these games. Great choice.

I have a soft spot for Herc's Adventures but I'm not sure if it's underappreciated aince it got rereleased on psn

Not sure it holds up well but I loved the hell out of this game. So much fun and a great story. Also no hub, licensed cars, and it felt like you were playing a movie. Using the turn signals on the car to tell you where to go was also a nice touch as opposed to a map or a big yellow arrow. It got completely overlooked because GTA 3 had come out around the same time

In the Hunt

Best arcade game ever. It's Metal Slug in submarines.

I remember Next Generation giving the game 1 star. They were my preferred magazine at the time but they were completely apeshit for 3d and weren't remotely afraid to admit it. They also gave Guardian Heroes a tiny 3-star review, while GameFan was doing, like, a 15-page feature on it. If only GameFan had the aesthetics of the early Next Generation magazines, it would have been perfect (the later ones, when they started calling themselves NextGen, began to drop in quality iirc, both in content and aesthetics).

Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay. I haven't played the remake (I think it's Assault on Dark Athena?), but when I played this on xbox, I remember the stealth sequences being great pieces of play, and combat was decent.

Natural Selection 1 - Brilliant human team vs alience team asymmetrical FPS game, and marines having an additional playstyle as RTS when playing commander. Later during the life cycle of teh game, Unknown Worlds added a new mode called combat, which was action focused FPS team deathmatch, with XP upgrade progression and no commanders. Was really fun too.

Obscure - isometric survival horror set in a high school. There were 5 characters you could switch to, and I think there was permadeath. It also featured local coop. Really great game.

Darksiders. It's the best Zelda game since MM for me. Wish that the sequel would have picked up where the original left off.

My pick is the Gundam Vs. series as a whole.

Once you understand the system (which is pretty basic and straightforward), they become fantastic arcade experiences with surprisingly tactical gameplay (as least against human players).

Managing boost gauge/stamina, last-second dodging, style of enemy targeting, risk/reward calculation of when it's safe to move in for a melee combo because you get locked into an animation when you do. Sound familiar?
Yes, in my opinion the underlying combat systems are very similar to Souls.

Definitely check out the PS3 or handheld games like Extreme Vs. and Gundam vs Gundam Next Plus. Looking forward to picking up the PS4 entry eventually.

Ridge Racer V, 6 and 7. Gets the endorphins pumping like few other games, capturing (and indeed perfecting) the RR vibe... Yet the disinterest was massive.

The Everybody's/Hot Shots Golf series could've gotten more love as well. But as with RR, we who love them really love them.
