Unity attempts to retcon its license to force existing users into the new pay per install terms

Honest question; if U3D burns, what other "true" indie ecosystem is there, Outside of Unreal? Godot? So many other options have died. Unity has excellent documentation and examples. Even my dumbass got a hovercraft buzzing around with some shitty multiplayer functionality. I really dont want to see just one option.....

Oh, Unity won't die. They'll just bleed money for a while until they get their heads out of their asses and get rid of this shitty fee setup.

This CEO went in to sabotage the company.

I can't see another explanation. They will be sued to oblivion. Nintendo, Microsoft have Unity. How are they expecting this to go down?

I wonder if devs who have devoted significant resources to Unity, even for a yet to be released project, have grounds to sue. They have sunk a considerable amount of time on Unity, based on what turned out to be a lie. I think they may actually have a case.

7000 employees, doing.. what? I mean I actually use Unity but I rarely see people talking about new features, yet I do with Unreal (and I don't use that).
Another case of bloated workforce that needs culling?

Aw man, I misread the title and thought they reversed their stupid per-install decision. :(

I mean changing terms like that doesn't sound very legal. They've basically buried themselves at this point unless they revoke this absolutely crazy idea.

A guy I follow on Twitter responded to their latest post with goatse and I was like wow…it's been a minute since I've seen that. And he's still not banned lmao

What dev would ever trust them again.

I think the big question must be asked in how the f was this company so mismanaged and bloated all this time?

Why do they need 7K people? Why in the f-ng duck wouldn't they restructure licensing different for big F2P devs vs Indies vs bigger companies?

Like this shit is so dumb it's simply incredible considering Unity's mobile market share and large mobile companies ' profits. This will be business case study at Colleges I suspect once they go belly up and somebody buys up their IP, assets and hires engineers for fraction of current company pricing.

Unity single-handedly sacrificing itself to rid the world of all the indie trash.

Like hollowknight and silksong right? How much thought you put into this post before you typed it out?

Wasteland 3 is on unity so this bums me out. Alot of the game I enjoy is on here, so I wonder what the future gonna look like.

there are other smaller engines, godot is the likely candidate given its opensource and being good enough for most unity projects, but an engine as famous as unity is likely to be rescued by a big group that will probably buy them soon and continue under newer most restrictive rules but better than what they are doing now

its conspiracy theory but its possible the CEO was paid to cause this mess and lower the price, it will be interesting if a single group immediately buy all the shares they can when they inevitable lower their value in a few days after all the ceo sold shares before doing the changes in policy so he knew this will cause problems to the value of the company

Upon clicking this article I'm met with giant cookie menu, once past that I see the face of author, who looks eerily like the Brenden Fraser meme. The people who write stories about this are dead weight just like the majoirty of Unity staff pulling the larger company down. Again, look at their revenue vs profits (losses in this case). Pure mismanagement. Of course the author is going to defend Unity and explain "it's not their fault". He's actually writing it about his own job and just super imposing the Unity situation. Industry is a mess.

Well he WAS formerly a part of EA so I'm no longer surprised that shit carried over

A compiler, a dcc program, MIT/ZLib/BSD licensed opensource libraries and #learntocode
open source you say?

.... Just use Godot. It is about as open as it gets.

Not that i'm against making your own engines either. But decentralized, open source software is objectively the way to go and so long as people don't realize this, situations like this will happen again, and again, and again and again. you gotta learn from the past so that you don't repeat it

The same option that has been there all along:

A compiler, a dcc program, MIT/ZLib/BSD licensed opensource libraries and #learntocode

As long as you are renting on someone else's land, you can be evicted at a moment's notice.

It won't happen, but I would love it if this was a Hard Times event that created Strong Devs again. >: )
While you're right, the reason why there are not game engines flooding the market is because they're too difficult to create and the skills you need to make one are not necessarily the ones you need to use one and make a game.

I was thinking on maybe try UPBGE which is Blender game engine maintained by community, but I am busy enough trying to learn and do stuff to then make tools for other people

Well Unity people... I tried to stick up for you because of the good you have done in the past.. but now no one can help you but you.

Good, just continue your bullshit so more and more devs will stop to use this Unity shitshow generic engine.
