Unmarked cop cars are like cheat codes

Here they used to have riced out unmarked cop cars(like a baby blue colored eclipse) to bait the street racers.

My favorite thing is the old cop cares they sell at auction. They usually have the extra light or whatever about the drivers sidemirror. So you know it looks just like a cop car without the stickers but it'll just be some dude driving around

I see a lot of those around me.

Just watch out for Crown Victorias. They are always undercover cops.

I’m not a cop, I don’t have a mustache, I don’t even wear polyester pants and I’ve only been divorced once!

Awesome episode of The League based on the character buying a Crown Vic and everyone everywhere assuming he's an undercover cop.

I love that ep. I also sorta know that situation. I have a 03 dodge stratus. They were older model cop cares back in early 2000s. My headlights look like a cop car so at night, people always slow down when I'm behind them. It gets on my nerves.

If I see an unmarked Crown Vic, I just assume it's a cop car.

My parents owned a white Crown Vic for years. White... of all colours.

It was such a pain in the ass to drive it because everyone on the road automatically assumes that you are a Ghost cop. When you pull up behind someone they slow down to a fucking crawl. They had that car for 6 years, just got rid of it last year... I don't know how they were able to stand it that long. I never drove it because of that, always used my sister's car.

Cops are so easy to identify because they all drive the same Crown Vics/Chargers/Impalas, whether they are undercover or not. They need to mix it up a little bit; I don't think anyone would suspect an undercover cop if one was driving a Camry or something.

i used to, but even if they're unmarked you can kinda tell if its a cop or not.

i check for plates, stickers and shit in the back windows.

One Timer!

I normally see one-times driven by crackhead looking fellows.

We have undercover Mustangs, Avalanches, Tahoes, and even a GTR around here, so it's a bit harder.

Where I grew up, unmarked cars were actually not allowed to pull you over solo (because people like faking cop cars or something).

These cars are really annoying and cheap. I know what he's talking about when they "bait".

One night when I was the DD, I was driving my friends to McDonalds at like 2am. I had an unmarked car behind me. I was driving 35 in a 35. The cop speeds by me and talks on his megaphone "drive slow and get home safe". I guess he wanted to see if I was a drunk driver.

How dare he.

I showed that fucking pig. Drove safe all the way home.

Bet that fucker is sitting at his desk, twiddling his pencil while thinking of an angry letter to write to COSCO. Ha, I think I'll open a Pepsi and replay some ICO, put some salt on that wound.

I'm always super annoyed when I'm getting followed by a crown victoria and I'm positive it's a cop, and then it turns out to just be some dude who bought the car at a police auction.

People get "unmarked" and "undercover" confused.

An officer driving an unmarked car is still plainly a police officer. They have their uniform on and their cruisers are still identifiable as a police car.

You would never be able to tell a real "undercover" police officer from anyone else on the street or road. They drive regular cars (minivans, etc.) with regular plates and wear normal, plain clothes.

he was in front of me pretty much the whole time

he kept randomly slowing down and speeding up, (i think) trying to get me to pass him, even though we were pretty much the only 2 cars out there for a good 10 mins. that's how he got he car in front of me once he got bored with me.

An off-duty cop once told me that they were trained to do this. It works with both marked and unmarked cop cars. They deliberately drive really slow and annoying just to see if you have the balls to pass them. If you pass them in a casual, cautious way, they leave you alone. If you rage and pass hard, they nail you. If you're too scared to pass, they keep watching and waiting because they know you'll probably screw something up sooner or later.

see i knew i wasnt crazy.
i've had it happen enough times to where i just chill and wait for them to move on.

I was going on to the wrong side of a road on campus and run right into an unmarked cop car. Lights on the dashboard went up and i was like "oh no" lol. Good thing i had a visitor tag on my windshield so yeah lol He let me go.

Was this like for highway patrol? I didn't think they could be unmarked. I often see highway patrol without the lights on the roof of the car but never without the body paint.

im assuming that the SHP on the plate meant State Highway Patrol.
all black, unmarked.
but i could see the lights in the windows.

There's a lot of them where my parents live and while I've never been busted by one they are a hazard to other drivers. Cops drive like assholes an I've seen a good number of them speeding or driving through 4way stops without lights on.

Not always, people buy Crown Vics and drive them around.

I've seen a couple unmarked Honda Civics's, Tahoes with stickers on the back etc

They still have lights, so I don't get why they wouldn't be able to solo.

I pissed off a state trooper who did this. Turned on the lights, tried to pull me over. I refused to pull over until a marked cruiser came. When this happened the guy in the unmarked cruiser just kept calling me a "fucking cocksucker" and various other things while ranting on the highway. I calmly explained to the other officer from the marked car that some kids pulled some stunt in my town using illegal lights on their car. He just sent me on my way.

The unmarked cruiser's reasoning? I was blocking the passing lane. However, there were roughly five/six cars in front of me and I was allowing traffic to merge into the right lane safely on a two lane highway.

mustangs, challengers, chargers, chevy suv. all the modern versions too.

Undercover cops in my area all leveled up from their little crown vics.

They drive cars that are nicer than 80% of the residents lol.

Guys, guys listen... what if... listen guys, what if every car looked like a cop car. Then we'd all drive super careful because there are like cops everywhere!

Yep, here they like to tailgate you and see if you speed up and tag you. I think most of us can identify a Crown-Vic by its headlights at night by now.

I actually had a cop follow me through three different cities (I didn't know it was a cop car at the time; it had no lights and was hanging back a couple of cars). The car was finally behind me while I was doing about 70 but it was dangerously close behind me... like all up in my ass so I was like I must be going too slowly. I decided to speed up to put some safe distance between me and them and as I broke 75, the sirens went off. I was directed off the freeway and the come ask me where I was going so fast (I had my work bag in the passenger seat) and I told him I just left work to go see my parents and that I only speed up that time because I thought the car behind me (him) was dangerously close. He told me he followed me through three cities and I was doing over 70 almost the whole time (the speed limits in these parts is 65mph on a freeway). He said that there was a lot of traffic on the road and should watch my speed. He also said he would let me off this time with a warning. I went on my merry way with three thoughts:
  • What kind of time did you have to follow me for three cities (pretty much over half of my 55 mile trip). During this time, plenty of cars passed me. Why me?
  • Why was he so close to me? He would have rear-ended me under no uncertain terms if I was forced to radically decelerate.
  • I will just leave the lane if anyone ever tails me and I generally follow that rule till this day.

This incident almost repeated itself a few weeks ago but I noticed it was a cop car in the day time and I just let it follow my slow ass. It lost interest after about 7 miles and then switched lanes and speed of at an illegal speed somewhere upwards of 80mph.

Such a dick move on their part and completely irresponsible too. They set people up by endangering everyone.

It's not hard to spot an unmarked car. They're almost invariably American-made cars, the license plates are often funky, the strip of lights is visible in the window, and you can typically see the laptop in the passenger seat. Plus, the person driving it feels he never needs to signal.

At least in Wisconsin, all of our unmarked cars have normal civilian automobile plates (unlike marked squads which have municipal plates). They are just registered like a normal car, except to the department instead of a person.

But yeah the other stuff makes it obvious. Also usually there are more antennas than a stock car. Sometimes 3-4 instead of just 1.

The kind of car you drive greatly affects if they're going to bother baiting you...I got baited a lot when I had my GTO, now I'm practically invisible in my crossover SUV even though I drive more aggressively

I had an interesting experience with one driving through Utah. It was midnight and it was a two-lane interstate (why Utah?) and this guy comes up behind me with his brights on, gets as close as possible and blinds the shit outta me. I'm a little wobbly trying to turn my mirrors away so I can see and I slow down hoping he'll pass me. Instead, he turns his fucking cop lights on and pulls me over. Reason? I wasn't driving steady. Fuck that guy.

What if you pace them?

But yes, I noticed this, because there's no other logical reason for a police car to be going exactly 30 in a 35 except to see if I'll pass by.

fuckin cops. who gave them troll authority?

Don't speed, don't get caught by a "cheating cop"

Really, the worst thing about this is the potential for civilians to impersonate a unmarked cop car and take advantage of some stupid person on the highway.

I totally forgot about Chargers but I've rarely seen an unmarked Charger here, usually up north more but thats about it.

I actually saw a Crown Vic drive by me and I saw his dry cleaning in the window and I was like "this can't be a cop", then he proceeds to pull some dude over ahead.
