Unofficial Jak and Daxter native PC port just dropped

5700 XT + R5 3600 here. Tested the games with PCSX2 on Windows using Vulkan and Linux with OpenGL (it's faster than Vulkan on Linux)

I want y'all to know that Jak 1-2-3 are visually flawless these days on PCSX2 (with some options enabled).

Jak I is the easiest to run. Perfect visuals and performance all the way through, 60 fps, no slow downs at 5K.

Jak II can do 60 fps most of the time at 1440p. Some slow downs in some cutscenes for a few seconds. There is a slight bug with medium distance mip-maps that CAN BE FIXED, but they take a significant performance toll. So I prefer not to fix this, game looks good enough and performance is solid otherwise all the way through.

I used patches for no interlacing (on Jak 1) and proper 16:9 widescreens for Jak 1 and 2.

The PC port for Jak 1 looks nice.

I also consider overall that both Jak 1 and Jak 2 are holistically a waste of everyone's time and are not worth playing. Currently 50% through Jak II so I might change my mind, but we'll see.
EDIT: Finished Jak 2 and Jak 3. I consider this entire franchise a waste of everyone's time. I don't understand how Naughty Dog could make such heavily flawed games. It's asanine. I'm still gonna play the other 3 games in this franchise. For posterity. But I'm taking a break.

I don't think many people realize that this is amazing news for J&D community. The PS4 ports were botched and emulating these games has always been a nightmare to deal with. The last good version to be released was the PS3. The PS3 did suffer the punch glitch but it looks absolutely gorgeous.

Having a native PC version is a huge ordeal since it brings accessibility and also means you don't need original hardware for these games anymore. The emulated versions are just a ton of work to get working properly, whereas a solution like this is arguably much easier and you obviously have built in options for screen resolution and such.

Also the PC port is using the black label version apparently which means for speedrunners, it is compatible with glitches used in speedrunning.

I decided to give this a try for myself, since I'm a huge fan of the first Jak and Daxter game. I was curious to see what all they had baked into their compiler.

Holy cow, this is pretty good stuff.

Took a bit of fiddling, but was able to get the game running in a 21:9 aspect ratio using the settings. You can also choose fullscreen / borderless / or windowed mode.

After I set my aspect ratio, I was able to choose my preferred resolution (3360x1440). Obviously - this sort of thing isn't even remotely possible on the PS2 / emulated version of the game.

Sadly, the pre-rendered cutscenes are still in 16:9 (better than 4:3 though, which is what I was expecting!)

Once the actual gameplay started though, it was all good

The game runs amazingly well, clocked over 100fps on my 3060.

So, obviously, this is pretty cool and a much better experience than I was expecting.
This is absolutely incredible, way better than anything in the past decade that has officially been put out regarding this series.

This is worth it alone for the high fps support, seeing this game run at 120fps is amazing, just wish Sony did something like this with their emulator instead of capping it at 1440p/60fps.

Yeah, put one of the most talented team of devs in the industry to remake fucking Jak and Daxter

That's like asking Rockstar to drop GTA VI to remake Table Tennis

Jak and Daxter wouldnt sell 1/5 of the copies that TLOU/Uncharted or a new cinematic IP from them would sell

Glad that you aren the one making decisions at Sony
ND have multiple teams, a remake of this game wouldn't require more than one of those and i assume they have about 3

Again, they are all working on something much more proffitable than a J&D remake

Give this task to whoever did the Medievil remake, for example

Looks like Jak & Daxter running at 4K in RPCS3, from the 'Jak & Dexter Collection' disc, to my eyes.

These games still have quite a bit of issues running on RPCS3, though (at least when I tried them a couple of months ago). Besides the HD interface, these won't be as good as a PC decompilation.

3440x1440 with texture replacement mod. Man how happy I am to have my copy of Jak 1 still. Game runs like an absolute dream.

I tested this game on a amd 2200u and vega 3 on native 1080p, ran decent. Easily could handle 720p though.

God bless ultrawide. It makes every game better.

I gotta give credit to Microsoft for managing to keep their legacy games modern by having many of them run at 4K through emulation.

Sad that Sony can't do the same thing. Should not be playing BC games that look ancient on 4K TVs.

Not buying their "Premium" services because it is a complete mess. Should have all PS3/PS2/PS1 classics emulated better

I love this game. Blew my mind back then. No loading times, incredible graphics. I almost couldn't believe it.

Naughty Dog is really something.

You're gonna make me buy an ultrawide. Stop your shit now!

Where and how do you do the texture replacement mods?

I've been really interested in playing these games for a long time, I only played the first one when it was recent but never the sequels.
Like others have said, emulation has always been bad for these on pcsx2, so at this point I was just waiting for the ps3 HD remaster to be playable on RCPS3 one day, but maybe this is even better, not sure how they compare.

One little thing I wonder though is if it might ever be compatible with other languages.
This is based on the PS2 NTSC version which means none of the europeans voice actings outside of english. Maybe some people will manage to patch aditionnal languages somehow in the future.

Super impressive stuff overall though, feels like a random miracle when such things happen.

edit : apparently the ntsc us version supports the EUR languages so nevermind what I said.

I don't expect anyone on this board to remember this game, but if you do, Jak and Daxter got ported to PC recently- it's part of a project to decompile naughty dog's coding language "GOAL" into a readable format that anyone can edit, as well as port the other 3 Jak games to PC. This coding language is also what Insomniac used for their first few Ratchet and Clank games, so if this project gets big enough we could see that series on PC too, and even crash bandicoot.

you can play it now, but it's not ENTIRELY finished. you can 100% the game but there are still some bugs to be fixed
that being said, compiling it is easy if you have an existing copy of Jak 1.

Amazing stuff.

Wonder how far this trend of making native PC ports of console games will get! There's so much talented people out there, so I guess the sky is the limit.

Been playing it a few weeks now (see my earlier screenshots in this thread) and I've been having a good time with it.

Excellent port, even though the devs say it's "only" about 90% complete. Ultrawide / 1440p looks amazing and makes this PS2 game really sing.

didn't know this was a thread alerady, glad the mods integated my message into an already existing one.... or maybe i did and i'm just a forgetful idiot, IDK

crazy how so much shit has happened in the past 3 years.
2019, we got Mario 64
2021, we got the Sonic 1, 2 and CD mobile decompilations, as well as the GTA3 and GTAVC decompilations

now this year we're getting Jak, Ocarina of Time, and a whole slew of N64 games like Banjo and Goldeneye. The modding scene for these games is about to go fucking insane.

It's not just the benefits of being on PC either, they redid a lot of the lighting and it makes the game look beautiful
People really don't remember Jak much when talking about the most beloved PS2 platformers. Ratchet hogs all the attention sadly

I really hope this trend continues. Imagine a native port of Perfect Dark with online coop and multiplayer, custom content and mods... :messenger_smiling_hearts:

Oh! Okay. That always seemed kinda weird to me, since at least from what I know of watching a friend play them on his PS2, those games are pretty cool. Wasn't a fan of the focus on driving on later games tho. :messenger_grinning_sweat:

That video is old. The new versions of the port are near 100% in every way. Some AMD GPU's are struggling tho'.

They've also said Jak II and Jak 3 is coming too, considering how well done this Sony should really consider buying this up and releasing it as an official game since most of the hard work is already done.
There must be some strange legal liability with doing this because there's numerous examples of fan developers remastering games better than the parent company, and the parent company never buys the work. Only real example I can think of is Sega hiring Christian Whitehead and licensing his engine.

No need to worry anymore. The OpenGOAL mod is running on OpenGL, with the devs stating they plan on introducing Vulkan later. That's besides the point I'm currently making:

On Windows, for the past decade+, AMD has had history really bad OpenGL performance. But that's NOW IRELEVANT. Drivers 22.7.1 completely fixes OpenGL performance on Windows for GCN4 and up GPUs. And they ran fine on OpenGL on Linux before anyway.

So, RX 6650 XT, you can enjoy this game with superb performance.
